Stashes Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 44 ratings

Stashes is set in Michigan, where auto manufacturing and agriculture forged a reliable middle class. It’s Fall 2009, after unfortunate real estate practices gutted the American Dream.

The plot focuses on two couples: the traditional, yet spunky Jackie and her dairy managing husband Steve, and their son, Brandon and his conniving wife, Amy.

When Brandon loses his job and home to foreclosure, he and Amy must move in with the folks, who, with a desire to be as capricious as their kids, leave their homestead in the care of Brandon and Amy to travel the US by RV.

Amy expands the business with pot cookies, dragging Brandon and Jackie into the scheme. As the local bank’s VP, Amy secretly increases the Home Equity Line of Credit that financed the RV. Oops!

Stashes is a comical crossover between family saga and drug caper, satire spun with good-natured American wit and grit.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The author of Stashes uses an interesting technique in switching narrators, and in doing so the reader gets a better feel for the personalities of the characters, primarily Jackie and Amy. The book is filled with clever turns of phrase, which add to the story and keeps the reader engrossed in it. Because many people occasionally dream of traveling the country in a similar fashion to Steve and Jackie's trip, Stashes is even more entertaining. Amy and Brandon are a bit frustrating to read about since they seem to keep stumbling into financial and even legal trouble, but as the book concludes things seem to end in a satisfying manner." - Red City Review

PJ Colando has a natural gift for characterization and a very good 'dialogue ear'. Her book, Stashes, is definitely funny. -
Mike Foley, Writers' Review

PJ Colando's sprightly novel shines its light on an uncommon slice of contemporary Americana, a Midwest culture most often viewed from flyover range. Dismayed by a cynical world gone to hell? Stashes' hearty protagonists, good-humored cussing, rewarded kindness, and luck synched with prayer might just be your antidote. -
Art Plotnik, author of numerous writing books

I was immediately drawn to this book because the people on the cover could be my parents. The image really captures the relatability of the main characters and their situation. The mingling of generations is very natural and, again, relatable. Interesting use of bouncing between Amy's perspective in some chapters--this breaking down of the 3rd wall allows readers to, again, see the difference in generational perspectives. -2015 Benjamin Franklin Awards Review

I was born and raised in the Midwest yet unabashedly aspired for adventure elsewhere, following my parents' model.

I live in southern California, where seasons seldom matter, where any promise can be conjured and fulfilled. I write while my husband watches TV sports, which are always in season = often.

I wrote a series titled Faith, Family, Frenzy! about the small town & rural Midwest. I know the characters and settings very well and my fertile imagination creates the plots. None of the escapades I create have happened to anyone anywhere, not even me.

Perhaps my series is a form of memoir...

I write humor and satire with a literary bent. Besides the four novels, I’ve published two short story anthologies and have a third in mind... I’m available to speak to your group or book club. I’m eager to engage with other writers and readers of my books.

I am having a blast!

Stashes is one of those outlier books that can't be easily categorized and do not follow the usual formulaic structure of most novels. It's humorous, occasionally tragic, mostly endearing and very difficult to put down. The characters each have their positive attributes and flaws; you can never be certain where they are going or how they will get there, and where they'll end up. The author allows each of the main characters to narrate and express their viewpoint as the story progresses, and while you might think that would get things mixed up, you always know where you are and who's telling the story.

There's a strong Midwestern flavor to this story of Jackie and Steve Breeden, a couple nearing retirement age in a farming community in Michigan. Steve's middle management position has led to him being laid off by General Motors downsizing, and he has taken up a home-grown micro-dairy business that keeps him busy caring for their tiny herd and delivering milk products around the neighborhood, while Jackie works part time at a library to help with the bills. Their big dream is to buy a big RV and travel the country. That dream becomes real when their son Brandon, and his sketchy wife, Amy, who have dug themselves a deep financial pit, run into a crisis. Brandon, like his father before him, is let go from his high-paying job at GM. With their home in foreclosure, they will be forced to move in with Jackie and Steve. Turning lemons into lemonade, the elder couple quickly envision the moment has arrived to let the kids live in their house while they get on their feet, while they take that trip they dreamed of. With money even tighter than expected, the unlikely mother-in-law and daughter-in-law find themselves in cahoots to sell marijuana-laced bakery cookies along with the dairy products. How strait-laced, deeply religious Jackie finds herself going along with this unlikely plan I'll leave for you to read about.

It's a road trip! Only it's an older couple in an RV instead of youngsters, as the Breeden's follow their favorite sports team, the Michigan States Spartans to the Alamo Bowl before heading to the West Coast. Back home we find that Brandon and Amy are falling apart as Amy's true personality arises and she plans to recoup all their loses by becoming a major marijuana grower right there on the farm next to the micro-dairy. As Brandon tries to help out and she recruits helpers it all gets out of hand. By the time the elder Breedens hit the California State line, bank account has been emptied and they find themselves doing things they could never imagined to continue their journey and work their way home to Michigan.

Don't expect perfectly planned out character arcs or a story that you can foresee, instead expect a lot of funny improbable incidents wrapped in the modern themes of legalized medical marijuana, the disintegration of the automobile manufacturing business, and its impact on family relationships in the rust belt. I had a lot of fun reading about them.

Let me be up front by saying I know PJ from a writers group we belong to and I was very happy for her when she published this book. I purchased it and read it to support another author because this is not an easy path we are on... I didn't know what to expect.

What I didn't expect was to be laughing out loud, with tears actual tears in my eyes. This book is funny. The characters are well developed and you can see this story unfold every step of the way.

But with all the great classic novels which are clearly 5-stars, why am I ranking Stashes as high as I would a Fitzgerald or Hemingway? I'm glad you asked that question, Dear Reader... There are genius novels which are in another hemisphere altogether and then there are solid novels which are written by mere mortals which are truly lovable. Considering how much I laughed, and how much I enjoyed the read.. yes, Dear Reader... it really is a 5-star read.

What a fun and insightful read! We parents always want what's best for our kids and are usually willing to help out in any way we can to make their lives better. How great to help your kids AND follow your own dream! Great set up: adult son & wife loose job and house; mom & dad starting to "feel age creeping up", as they manage their small dairy farm, still dreaming of seeing the country & having adventure before they're too old. Perfect solution? Let their "kids" move in, take over the farm, buy an RV, follow the dream! Crazy adventure follows, naturally not what any of them expected! PJ Colando provides fun character development with tremendous insight into parent-child, husband-wife relationships, and equally intriguing, portraying that we're never too old to grow! Well done, looking forward to more from this author!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading PJ Colando's novel Stashes. The novel takes the reader on a cross-country adventure with a dairy-farming couple from central Michigan traveling across the western United States in their Winnebago. When I first wrote this review, it was well past my bedtime, and I was struggling to keep my eyes open as I typed it. Take that as an indication of how much I enjoyed reading it, especially its surprising conclusion. PJ Colando is a talented, playful, and thoughtful writer. By reading Stashes you'd think that she has no respect for us Californians, but I happen to know that is where she lives (at least for now).

This is a very charming book about a family in a small midwestern town in Michigan and while Michigan State football is a focus, there is mention of Purdue in the book. There seems to be a lot of secrets in the family and an unexpected twist to the story which gave meaning to the title "Stashes" but I won't spoil that. It's a nice beach book read and I would highly recommend bringing it along this coming summer.

The places, the characters, the banter, and the situations all call for Stashes by PJ Colando to be a television sitcom; she has all the characters to make this a must watch hit show. As a weekly series this one book would fill a season of fun and laughter. These people move into your life and stay with you for a wild ride.
