Twists, Turns, & Curves (The Rose Collection Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 43 ratings

An overscheduled life is no life at all.

Seven days a week, Caroline works to promote the ministry of Dr. Hammond. When she’s not teaching fourth grade, she’s running a children’s Sunday school or helping with Saturday morning visitation. It’s an exhausting life, but as an unmarried plus-sized woman in the church, her work is the only thing that makes her feel respectable.

Caroline Taft didn’t choose this life. She got her college degree and job more to keep her mother and pastor happy than because of any passion she might have had for the work. But after five years of teaching for Benchmark Baptist Christian School, Caroline is told that her career will end at the school year’s close. She has three months to discover what she wants out of life. She’ll start by pursuing a relationship with Ty Lang — the uncle of one of her students and the nicest guy she’s ever met. Now that she has time, she can finally find some joy in life.

Life may hold some Twists and Turns, but it’s time for Caroline to throw some curves.

Though born on the east coast, I spent most of my life in the American Southwest, eventually settling in California where my husband and I raised two sons. Later we welcomed two fantastic daughters-in-law and four grandchildren into our family. After teaching history and literature for eighteen years, I resigned to write full-time. That new career move was paired with a physical move to beautiful Nevada, where I continue to write happily.

My preferred genre is Christian contemporary fiction. I keep my characters grounded in the real world and the real problems that Bible believers face today. While they grow, learn, and find possible solutions to their issues, my characters must also deal with the detritus of the past. Living well today doesn't mean that yesterday is erased. I write what I know, either first-hand or through close observation, injecting the joy, happiness, and humor that comes with spiritual freedom and love.

A relatable story. I enjoyed the characters and message. It definitely had some interesting twists. Will read this author again.

Caroline's story was so good. Her journey out of an abusive church where she worked was real and compelling. She's a lovely person and has been treated so badly, but somehow hasn't lost her faith or her kindness. Ty is wholesome and kind, and watching them grow together was a delight. This isn't fluff, and is very rewarding to read.

Within ministry it’s easy to cross the line into manipulation, taking advantage of volunteers and mis-using Bible verses to further your own agenda. I’ve seen it first hand. I’ve been taken advantage of. I’ve had a pastor tell me that what I heard from God was obsolete because his own ministry should be first in my heart. Skwarczynski tells the real story in Twist, Turns, and Curves. The misuse of Caroline’s heart and kindness, though fiction, represents many of us who have been used and abused by people claiming to love Jesus. I highly, highly recommend reading this book and praying humbleness and understanding into your own heart if you’re involved in ministry. Not only does Skwarcynski do an incredible job with character growth and storyline, but she paints a clear picture of true love, good communication, forgiveness and open understanding that it takes to make a relationship work. I absolutely adored Ty and Caroline as a couple—and seriously, why can’t Caroline be real?! I need her friendship!!! Wish I could give this book more than five stars. It deserves it!

Cute romance story but for me the value is in the deconstruction. Marbeth does an amazing job of holding up some toxic purity culture, misogynistic and fat shaming to the light of the truth via an enjoyable vehicle of fiction. This is was a book I couldn’t put down. I identified a lot with the MC, since I’ve always been plus sized. In the IFB, plus sized women (not guys) are double shamed first in secular culture then in the church culture. You’re seen, like Caroline as less than because of size. I learned a lot about myself through her overcoming those toxic lies. I also could identify a lot with the pastor essentially forcing her into the box of Christian school teacher. A similar thing happened to me. I felt called to be a missionary yet also felt called to attend a college that didn’t have a single female missions degree. Instead of questioning if I was truly hearing from God on both fronts, my pastor counseled me to take teaching as a back up plan. I ended up coming back to teach for him after college. I eventually quit 3 years into my stint. It was one week before the end of the school year, because I couldn’t take it anymore. As soon as I read the teaser for the book (the scene where she gets fired) I literally felt as if someone told Marbeth my story! I would love to see more stories like these told, and Marbeth has inspired me to share my own. :)

Anyone who has been in a spiritually abusive church or home will resonate with the main character’s struggles. Reading this was like looking into a mirror, it so accurately reflected the details of my own experiences. It’s an excellent resource that exposes spiritual abuse in an easy to read format with a captivating storyline with poignant illustrations of spiritual abuse that may be more widely preferred than reading books about spiritual abuse. Brilliant! As an advocate for spiritual abuse survivors this series has gone to the top of my reading resource list.

This was such an enjoyable read! I looked forward to every chapter. Having grown up in the same environment portrayed in this book, I find the story relatable and refreshing as the main character, Caroline, navigates her journey of finding love and freedom away from the spiritual abuse of her past. Hope, love and acceptance are the themes of this book. I've really enjoyed both books in this series and look forward to more!

I love Marbeth's work! Her characters come to life and you feel as if you're there, and that you know and love these people! I have nothing but good things to say and I can't wait for the next book in the series. The characters and circumstances are so relatable for anyone who's been in full time ministry.

Putting my thoughts into words is not easy for me so writing reviews is not easy. But I can say that I have found a new author! What a wonderful book along with the first one I read by this author! She deals with plus sized woman and I found myself identifying with Caroline! Thank you so much for writing this book!
