Amazon.com Review

"Literary critics make natural detectives," says Maud Bailey, heroine of a mystery where the clues lurk in university libraries, old letters, and dusty journals. Together with Roland Michell, a fellow academic and accidental sleuth, Maud discovers a love affair between the two Victorian writers the pair has dedicated their lives to studying: Randolph Ash, a literary great long assumed to be a devoted and faithful husband, and Christabel La Motte, a lesser-known "fairy poetess" and chaste spinster. At first, Roland and Maud's discovery threatens only to alter the direction of their research, but as they unearth the truth about the long-forgotten romance, their involvement becomes increasingly urgent and personal. Desperately concealing their purpose from competing researchers, they embark on a journey that pulls each of them from solitude and loneliness, challenges the most basic assumptions they hold about themselves, and uncovers their unique entitlement to the secret of Ash and La Motte's passion.

Winner of the 1990 Booker Prize--the U.K.'s highest literary award--Possession is a gripping and compulsively readable novel. A.S. Byatt exquisitely renders a setting rich in detail and texture. Her lush imagery weaves together the dual worlds that appear throughout the novel--the worlds of the mind and the senses, of male and female, of darkness and light, of truth and imagination--into an enchanted and unforgettable tale of love and intrigue. --Lisa Whipple

From Publishers Weekly

Two contemporary scholars, each studying one of two Victorian poets, reconstruct their subjects' secret extramarital affair through poems, journal entries, letters and modern scholarly analysis of the period. PW called this Booker Prize winner "an ambitious and wholly satisfying work, a nearly perfect novel."

An absolutely mesmerizing book. A remarkable feat of storytelling through prose and poetry that compares with nothing I have ever read before. Byatt's facility with the English language, combined with her broad, classical knowledge, make this a read for those who want to savor every sentence and poem. Amazing that an author can be so accomplished in such a broad spectrum of creative writing.

POSSESSION by A.S. Byatt employs a parallel plot device, in which two modern researchers (Maud Bailey and Roland Mitchell) try to find out what (if any) was the relationship between two Victorian poets, Randolph Ash and Christabel LaMotte in the years 1859 to 1861.

The first time we meet them is in a railway compartment on page 299:

“We are travelling together,” he said. “We decided–you decided–to come. What I do not know is whether you would wish–whether you would choose–to lodge and manage yourself separately from me after his point–or whether–or whether–you would wish to travel as my wife…

“I want to be with you,” she said…She spoke quickly and clearly; but the gloved hands, in their warm kid, turned and turned in his. He said, still in the quiet, dispassionate tone they had so far employed: “You take my breath away. This is generosity–”

“This is necessity.”

“But you are not sad, you are not in doubt, you are not–”

“That doesn’t come into it. This is necessity. You know that.” She turned her face away and looked out, through a stream fine cinders, at the slow fields. “I am afraid, of course. But that seems to be of no real importance. None of the old considerations–none of the old cares–seem to be of any importance. They are not tissue paper, but seem so.”

“You must not regret this, my dear.”

“And you must not speak nonsense. Of course I shall regret. So will you, will you not? But that too, is of no importance at this time.” (299-300)

Victorian In this scene, we are not just limited to the words written down as part of a one-sided conversation that characterizes a letter. We are also given, in A. S. Byatt’s text, additional information that conveys more vividly the emotions. Here, she characterizes Ash’s embarrassment, hesitancy and fear of failure by the rhythms of his speech. He does not speak fluently, he pauses and repeats himself, sometimes changing a word (from ‘we’ to ‘you’, from ‘wish’ to ‘choose’) to acknowledge that Christabel LaMotte isn’t his wife, but an independent being. LaMotte is nervous and somewhat self-deceiving, telling herself and him that staying in his room is a ‘necessity’ rather than a choice. In all other aspects, she employs a steely clear-sightedness, knowing that she is ignoring feelings of guilt and fear and regret in her single-minded determination to have an affair with him. Lastly, she doesn’t hesitate to contradict him. So this is no typical coy Victorian Miss. This is a clear thinking woman making choices, with one dash of self-deception thrown in to make her human.

I loved the way this novel ends. Five stars.

This book won the Booker prize in 1990 – that is why I decided to read it.

Whether I enjoyed it or not is something of an enigma.

The story is split into two different ages – that of the Victorian poets, Randolph Ash and Christabel LaMotte, and that of the modern-day researchers, Roland Michell and Maud Bailey. Roland is studying the work of Ash, and Maud that of LaMotte. Their paths cross when Roland tries to investigate a reference he found to a meeting between Ash and LaMotte that suggests there was a liaison between the two.

The book contains a great deal of poetry written by Ash and LaMotte in Victorian style (as they are fictional characters, it is all written by the author, Byatt). I found the poetry difficult to follow and tedious to read and I started to skip it, and then realised that I could do so without losing anything of the story.

The narrative switches between the developing relationship of Ash and LaMotte and the investigative efforts of Roland and Maud. The current day part of the book also relates the rivalry between researchers in different universities and parts of the world and shows up petty jealousies and possessiveness.

Apart from the poetry that heralds the change in era, the Victorian times are written about with a formality that distinguishes them from the modern 20th century parts. Byatt’s change in voice and her swathes of poetry are testament to her tremendous ability with the English language. I found the Victorian era passages to be more believable and enjoyable to read (excluding the poetry), rather than the modern times which felt simple and lacking in character. Perhaps that is what Ms Byatt sought to achieve.

One thing I found fascinating was that this was written before email and Google and so their research efforts were arduous compared to how easily we would do things in this internet era.

My assessment of this story is that it was enjoyable if I left out large parts of it. So there is the enigma. Can one be said to have enjoyed a book if one ignored a large part of it?

I’m sure the Booker prize was awarded for Ms Byatt’s dexterity with the language and the intricacy of the content.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rediscovering the romance of poetry
Reviewed in Germany on September 16, 2022
This is a beautifully written novel that has many layers. At its core is a romance fit for the giants of 19th century novels and poetry. It’s as if the brontës and the shelleys were back. But that doesn’t do byatt justice: she created two characters who are flesh and blood in their own right, and gave them poetic voices that are incredibly personalized… what a delight! The poetry is all the richer for the story, and vice versa. The novel invites the reader to understand how the life of an artist is an essential part and key to understanding their works.

This brings us to the second layer: beyond the love story and the poetry is a very ironic and good humored critique of the academia in the late 80s, early 90s - the extremely alienating postmodern fad as well as the „cultural/womens/etc“ studies that were developing at the time. As the protagonists and villains of modern day literature departments compete for academic renown, as the different schools piece their knowledge separately together, as Michell falls in love with Maud, Byatt unwinds the story of an academia that has lost the big picture: the picture of what matters.

One of the most important scenes is at the end, when Michell rediscovers what brought him into the English department to start with: poetry. I think she says something like this: Michell realized his love for poetry superseded his commitment to ideas of poetry expounded by the different schools of literary criticism. This is brilliant!

I remember studying litterateur under the postmoderns. There’s nothing but the text. The author doesn’t matter. Biographies didn’t matter. The text was taken apart and formed into whatever the accidental school held as its dogma, as it’s ideology. This kind of literary criticism kills the individuality of the artwork and the individuality of the human experience as expressed and lived by the author. The literary critic forces the author to become parroting minions, and closes his interpretation to anything new the author has to say. Hats off to Byatt for demonstrating this in a novel!

You can choose how many layers of the novel you wish to experience. For the general audience, the romance itself is more than satisfying. For those up for more meta-reading, this book is full of little sweet punches against the dictating fashions of those times. We’re currently in the death throes of the postmodern, but it’s amazing she already wrote this in the 90s.

5 stars. I wish she had written more!
