I enjoyed this inspirational story by Carol James, particularly the dignity with which she treated the difficult subject of abuse. No Longer Captive features a heroine with an alluring name -Ethne- who is fiercely determination to avoid loving a man because of her own experience with an abusive and unfaithful father. How powerful to see the hold these experiences can have as we refuse to release the chains of bondage. I found myself cheering for her and lamenting her refusal to let herself love. The challenge to forgive seemingly unforgivable sins was an intense emotional ride. I always appreciate those little barbs of misunderstanding and false assumptions and the refreshment that comes when the truth is made known. Fans of Fixer Upper will love the aspects of interior design, how it parallels what's happening in our souls as well.

Carol James grabs your heart in her new romance. Ethne runs a successful restoration business, but she is hiding hurts from her past. When she meets a handsome military doctor at the reading of her father's will, her path keeps crossing with Dr. Daniel Spenser.
As old hurts come to light, Ethne learns to forgive her past. Turns out, Dr. Daniel has some skeletons in his closet too. As Ethne and Daniel bond and begin a relationship, will Ethne be able to embrace what is before her? Or will insecurities from her past threaten her future happiness?
You'll cheer for Ethe and Daniel to rehab their happily-ever-after.

The author takes something that is a hard topic to cover and does so with grace and class. I really enjoyed reading this book. Two people overcoming difficult pasts and having a future. It made a great read. The book read quickly despite the heavy content and I found myself very much empathising with the main character. Also, can we say that this is a unique name and I’m intrigued by it.

This was a wonderful book and I hope you get the chance to give it a read.

I found this story to be a complex and insightful look at the impact of abuse. While Ethne is doing well in life by starting a successful business, she has walled herself off from any deep relationships with men. Her life is missing joy. Then comes Daniel, also a victim of abuse, but one who was given the opportunity to free himself from that pain--and to help Ethne eliminate her chains. But for Ethne, trust is difficult. This held my interest from the first page to the last. Really a wonderful book!

From a secret as deep and scarred as a dark ravine, Ethne must find healing. The waterfall proves a wonderful metaphor for life-giving streams. Ethne’s path in life has been as rugged as the trail to the waterfall, but God has plans for her that she couldn’t possibly dream. Carol James novel is one of healing and hope. The characters are vibrant and I lost a lot of sleep because I didn’t want to stop reading. Highly recommended.

Philippians 3:10 I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death.
This is a story that inspires one towards the power of rising above our sufferings through forgiveness and God's Word. The characters in the story are portrayed honestly in the struggle to overcome sufferings and to be restored by faith, hope and love. I definitely recommend this book!

Ethne came back to her hometown after her father's death for his burial and reading of his will, albeit against her will. But for her brother and pretences sake she would do this. At the reading of the will they met Daniel, the 3rd beneficiary of her father's will, the son of her father's first partner whom he felt he owed for never paying him out for his share in their medical practice. There was an immediate connection but she vowed to never get involved with a man, bearing the scars of her father's abuse. But God work in mysterious ways and this may the start of her making peace with what happened to her during her childhood. Unwittingly her father may have given her the greatest gift, if she could only get her faith back, believe I herself and the goodness of people. Such a sensitive subject but beautifully written by this author. A page turner for sure. I received an ARC copy and am leaving a voluntary review.

Be still my heart. One of the best romances I’ve read. The author’s three-dimensional characters allow the reader to experience the joy, sorrow, pain, and love that Ethne and Daniel feel. I rode the roller coaster of emotions in every page of this book, through Ethne’s troubled past and with each cautious step as she learned to trust. A five-star novel.
