“WHATEVER IT TAKES, LORD.”

ON OCTOBER 2, 1981, a young college student, Scott Mitchell, fell from a cliff, resulting in complete paralysis below his chest. The tragedy occurred when he was in a spiritually desperate place and yearned for God to intervene in his life, whatever the cost. His story of hardship and trial by fire did not end with his falling accident, but has followed him throughout the years, culminating in one of the worst heartbreaks of his life.

LIFE IS HARD, BUT GOD IS GOOD

Having experienced some of the worst things life can throw at a person, Scott has discovered that God can be trusted to do his most loving work in the worst of circumstances. As he shares his story in these pages, his prayer is that you will begin to hope again in a God who is with you in the fire, and trust Him to bring something beautiful from the ashes.

SCOTT MITCHELL is a preacher, teacher, writer, mentor, and birdwatcher. He finds his greatest joy in sharing his gift of encouragement, especially with those who hurt. He’s been married to Sandy, the love of his life and best person he’s ever known, for forty years. They presently make their home in Clearwater, Florida.

One of my Master's professors used to say "books are people." He encouraged us to see that when we read a book, we are having a conversation with someone we otherwise may have never had a chance to meet because of the realities of time and space. This is one of the handful of books I have read where I had the immense blessing of knowing the actual author long before I read the book. "Pasture" Scott is just that, an open field where during his pastoral tenure at New River we were able to see a field laid bare for us to plant and grow the fruit of the Spirit in. I have known many pastors and mentors in my life, but Pasture Scott is the one I claim as "my Pastor". His teaching was never loud or harsh, yet his words spoke clearly and boldly for those who had ears to hear. His tone and timbre echoed back to another Good Shepherd. I knew each message was not being parroted from whatever the voice of the day was, but something he had heard and walked through with the Spirit intimately. I was not sure what to expect from this book. I knew it would be honest and challenging. Although I knew most of the arcs of his story and struggles, this book filled in the gaps with the raw emotion Scott dealt with in his journey of loss and life. The things most of us never saw because he never saw his disability as a "crutch" to use his words. He saw his wheelchair as a pulpit, and never used it for emotional manipulation. Honestly, Scott was more free and whole than most I knew, including myself at the time. This books shares the pains and struggles he went through. Because I have not walked through a fraction of what Scott has, Scott's life, and now this book have made me a better friend and pastor to those facing the brutal realty of life in a fallen world. He made me re-examine my assumptions on disability, pain and healing. And when I became a pastor later, his life is the tone and timbre that I have modeled my field after. So if you have faced the tough realities of life in a broken world, are walking with those experiencing this, or want to learn to be a better friend to them in the process - Buy this book and read it. Keep it as a book to share with others.
I will be honest and say that I wanted more from this book, just like I wished I had more time while at New River. Not to say the book is lacking. It fulfilled its purpose completely. But the field that is Scott'a life has much more spiritual fruit to be produced. So here's hoping that a follow up tome could be produced that shares more of the lessons learned and taught along the ride.

Scott's book is very encouraging to those who are hurting and facing today's trials. His book renders hope for those who are experiencing hardships.
Scott tells of the difficulties that he and his family have been through together. He tells how God's word and His people have helped him along his life's journey.
Read this book for encouragement and how God uses Scott Mitchell to reach others who are hurting.

Wow, Pasture Mitchell Is a real God send. Such perspective, grace and teaching in the pages of his story. I was challenged as a Christian man. I also felt like I was somehow alongside of Scott during my read. His writing style is fantastic, and I am looking forward to his next release!

As a person with a progressive disease, I found Scott's book a very meaningful exploration of life that includes suffering. I connected so much with the burden of those who assume that, if you have enough faith, you should be better, ignoring the Bible's teaching of suffering and tribulation in this life, and Paul's own experience of asking for healing and being told no, because God's grace was sufficient. To accept the "No," or "Not yet" from God is hard, but if surrendered to, can truly be a calling resulting in the glory of God.
Scott's story is a great reminder to think of life in terms of a whole life, not just the pain of today. After I read it, I gave the book to my son, who has no disability but is in college choosing his future path. The book's story of two young men and their different choices and the life-determining consequences is perfect for his stage of life right now.
I highly recommend Though He Fall to any follower of Christ living with disability, chronic illness, the pain of a prodigal child, or really any suffering. I finished it renewed in purpose and my eyes set back on the eternal.

This book is very well written. It's a page turner for sure that's hard to put down. I read the book entirely in 2 days. I love the transparency of Scott Mitchell in sharing his story combined with his gift of words where the words just flow off the page as you read them. I love how the writing style allows me as a reader to be able to walk alongside him as I read about his life's journey and God's transformation in and through his journey. Scott is the real deal. I love reading or hearing raw testimonies of how God worked in and changed one's life like is shared in this book. It's full of valuable Godly wisdom by which I've been blessed.

Before I finished the first chapter I stopped and ordered four more books for my children. This book will make you laugh and it will make you cry. It was like walking through his journey by his side. Scott is very open about his challenges and frustrations while always pointing to our Heavenly Father. Life is hard. God is bigger. Becky
