Purchase options and add-ons

From the acclaimed author of Her Every Fear and The Kind Worth Killing comes a diabolically clever tale of obsession, revenge, and cold-blooded murder—a sly and brilliant guessing game of a novel in the vein of Ruth Ware, Paula Hawkins, and Patricia Highsmith.

Harry Ackerson has always considered his stepmother Alice to be sexy and beautiful, in an "otherworldly" way. She has always been kind and attentive, if a little aloof in the last few years.

Days before his college graduation, Alice calls with shocking news. His father is dead and the police think it’s suicide. Devastated, Harry returns to his father’s home in Maine. There, he and Alice will help each other pick up of the pieces of their lives and uncover what happened to his father.

Shortly after he arrives, Harry meets a mysterious young woman named Grace McGowan. Though she claims to be new to the area, Harry begins to suspect that Grace may not be a complete stranger to his family. But she isn’t the only attractive woman taking an interest in Harry. The sensual Alice is also growing closer, coming on to him in an enticing, clearly sexual way.

Mesmerized by these two women, Harry finds himself falling deeper under their spell. Yet the closer he gets to them, the more isolated he feels, disoriented by a growing fear that both women are hiding dangerous—even deadly—secrets . . . and that neither one is telling the truth.

Review

“Suspense lovers will devour this deliciously duplicitous read, which is chock-full of twists, turns, lust, greed, and dishonesty.”Library Journal

“Swanson’s fourth psychological thriller is a gripping exploration of delusion and deceit; sure to please readers of Laura Lippman’s stand-alones.” — Booklist

“Complex [and] intriguing… [Swanson] makes sure to place those twists and turns perfectly... And when someone else turns up dead, the story goes from 0-to-60 in a split-second. Peter Swanson has done a fantastic job.” — Suspense Magazine

“Gripping… [Alice’s] past is peppered with secrets and the damage is revealed in a split narrative between now and then, culminating in an edge of the seat ending.” — Sunday Post (UK)

“Swanson has drawn on Alfred Hitchcock to good effect. In All the Beautiful Lies, he looks instead to du Maurier.… The reader is soon gripped and wondering which will come first: Harry’s seduction or his death? Swanson’s magpie borrowings are always finessed into something fresh and piquant.” — Guardian

“This atmospheric, stylish mystery is pure pleasure.” — Sunday Mirror (UK)

“An explosive mix of seductions, obsessions, and dark secrets.” — New York Journal of Books

All the Beautiful Lies has a very rich texture which the reader gets to see only gradually, so cleverly it is disguised.” — Thriller Books Journal

“Crammed with twists, turns, and duplicity galore… The narrative… soars to a nerve-shredding finale that will leave you gasping.” — Saga (UK)

All the Beautiful Lies was hard to put down… This mystery with a twist was outstanding.” — Iron Mountain Daily News

“A compulsive read.” — Good Housekeeping, Thriller of the Month (UK)

“There are many twists and turns, and quite a few surprises along the way…. All the Beautiful Lies is very much character-driven and strong on psychology…. A solid, twisty work of suspense.” — PCA/ACA Mystery & Detective Fiction Reading List

Mesmerized by these two women, Harry finds himself falling deeper under their spell. Yet the closer he gets to them, the more isolated he feels, disoriented by a growing fear that both women are hiding dangerous—even deadly—secrets . . . and that neither is telling the truth about his father. And when someone else turns up dead, Harry realizes he’s in much more danger than he’d ever imagined.

With dazzling and intriguing points of view, tantalizing and twisty plotting, and some of the cleverest and most manipulative characters to snake their way through a thriller in recent memory, All the Beautiful Lies cements Peter Swanson’s place among today’s most talented masters of suspense.

Great suspense that will keep you on you toes and feet!
Awesome Read!I get this book in a giveaway I won. What a great read! This had me hooked from the beginning. What a Rollercoaster! The sitting, theme, and the Characters had me pulled so in. Everything was well put together and it was just perfect. This novel would have you guess and thinking all the way to the end. What a great thrill and suspense. I love a great suspense that would have me think and guessing. This novel did just that to me. To the point that am wrong. When the ending comes am on shock. I wouldn't of never believe or guess. Like OMG!Highly recommend everybody get this book and read it. Its so good! Can't wait for his next book.Harry had come home to Grey Lady, his home since he was first born, upon hearing his father had died. Leaving before graduation was not really a problem. He was worried more about going home, to having only Alice, his father's second wife, there, alone. He'd admitted to himself a long time ago, when he first met his father's bride, that she was beautiful and that he was attracted to her. Alice was closer to Harry's age than to his father's. But he'd been in college and rarely went home. Now that was impossible. He had also noticed a stranger at the funeral, a young attractive girl he knew was not a long-term resident in his home town. But he was soon busy since his father had run a local bookstore and his one assistant would need help. Harry reluctantly accepted he would have to help out at least until they knew what would happen in the future.Still, the primary issue for him was that he was not satisfied with what had really happened to his father. He had walked the area for years without incident. What could have happened to bring about an accidental death? Only later it was changed and being treated as a suspicious death... Who would kill his father?Of course the role of the second wife always comes to mind at a sudden death. Still I was surprised that the novel takes us back to the earlier life of Alice, as she moved to Kennebunk, at the age of 14. Thereafter, the story moves back and forth between now and then and follows Alice's life through to the present. It was hard to understand this character and readers will begin to question her role, her intentions, and her mental health. Especially when she makes it clear that she would be willing to accept Harry into her bed now... Let's just say the present sometimes follows history... And, as the title predicts, there will be many lies spewed out...but not enough to allow us to be sure who the villain is!Because before long, the woman from the funeral had stopped in the Bookstore, asking about a job. But, right away, Harry knew there was more to her story as well. Would she be truthful or would he have to search out her lies as well...Learning about your father after his death can be a traumatic experience for a son and Harry was caught in the lives, the lies of those who had filled a place in his father's life. The story flows smoothly, sharing more and more, creating suspense that keeps you edgy, frustrated, as well as feelings of sympathy for Harry, the son of a man who he thought had lived in and through his books. And perhaps he did but Harry was seeing another death after his father's, was soon in the hospital as he chased a man who seemed to be part of what was happening... Until little by little, pieces fell together...But readers will only begin to know as Harry puts everything together... and even as the book ended, the surprise of another death neatly closes the story... Wow! This one has to be read to discover the full impact of the intrigue that occurred over many years there in Kennebunk, Maine... Highly recommended!

Peter Swanson has done it again. Crafted a suspense-filled novel in ALL THE BEAUTIFUL LIES. Harry, a college student, who is to graduate in just days, receives a call from his aloof stepmother, that his father has suddenly passed away. She thinks that he slipped and fell or perhaps had a heart attack while on his daily walk in the woods of Maine where they live. Harry immediately leaves school to come home. Awkward in this house that doesn’t feel like home, he tries to make himself useful while still trying to wrap his head around the shock of losing his father. All the while, his stepmother wants Harry by her side.

At the funeral, he sees a mysterious girl, who later comes in to his father’s bookstore. Harry is curiously drawn to the girl. But who is she and why is she here.

After just a few days in town, both Harry and his stepmother, and the police, begin to think that the dad’s death was not an accident.

Harry certainly has a lot on his mind. Grief and now these two women.

Swanson sets a dark tone. Get your very best twisted mystery on with this one.

I thought the book would be more creative. It’s not a spoiler alert that there is murder in the book, I just thought it would be more thrilling. The Kind Worth Killing set the bar high and I don’t think this lived up to expectation. But it was an easy read and it was still interesting. I like that the book had flashbacks to help make you understand how everything got to the way it did.

A grieving young man searches for answers to his father's death, what he finds is his father's life was more confusing than he could have ever imagined. From the first page I was hooked. A few chapters in, I was completely immersed in this entangled story of self-indulgent lust, murder and the ultimate revenge. The subject matter isn't for everyone but that doesn't mean inappropriate desire doesn't exist.
The unhurried pace is clearly intentional; no words were wasted, every scene seized my attention. Mr. Swanson doesn't shy away from exploring the complexity of the human mind and why love, hate and self-preservation can push people's conscience into places they never thought it could go. It's for this reason and his flawless writing, he has become a must-read author for me and I will sit with my hands folded, patiently waiting for his next work, silently screaming inside.
Highly recommend.

This book was a slow burner, but suspenseful enough for me to want to see it through. Probably not one of Swanson's best novels, but still really good. Alice is a hard character to like. She's most likely a sociopath. The reader wants to just shake her sometimes ! Swanson us very goid at setting up scenes. I could not only see the beach, I could smell the salt and hear the gulls. He's got a real gift as I can still recall other scenes from his other books which I read long ago. The mystery isn't all consuming here, but it was highly interesting learning about these characters and their lives. Great development. Four stars.

I’ve loved all of Peter Swanson’s books, and lost my entire Sunday to this one. Once again, the author crafts villains who look and act – at first – like everyday people. But then gradually, in perfect sync with the action, they reveal themselves as people who are missing a moral center; people who can kill for convenience and without remorse and then go about their days. The story is compellingly twisted – reminiscent of James Cain and full of twists I didn’t see coming. It’s one of the best thrillers I’ve read so far this year, and is going to stay in my head for a long time.

I come to Peter Swanson for the stories. His characters all have the same descriptions (the "beautiful" women are all white, some shade of blonde, wide spaced eyes, usually a heart shaped face and very curvy, the less attractive women wear too much makeup and are usually older, and the men in all his novels are also slightly different variations of one another) so I was sad Detective James, the one outlier, wasn't in this story. All the men are usually obsessed with a college girlfriend well into their 30s and 40s, and everyone is bookish. Like I said, I come for the story, the mystery to solve. This book was quite the ride but I hope in the future there is some diversity instead of the same archetype of character from all 4 of his novels. I do like the reoccurring scenery such as Kennewick, the mention of the mansion from The Kind Worth Killing, and Mathers College. Overall, Swanson is a good writer and I'll continue to read each book he puts out.

Swanson is one of my new favourites. I love that he doesn’t miss all of the small stuff…the idiosyncrasies, habits and insights drawn from the main characters.
I read through it quickly because I just needed to know what was next…and next…and next.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and would definitely recommend it.

Just days before his university graduation, Harry receives a telephone call informing him his father is dead. Benumbed with the news, Harry makes his way to his father’s house in Maine for the funeral and to be there for Alice, his father’s much younger second wife.

Beautiful and sexy in an otherworldly type way, we learn Harry, much to his dismay, has lusted over his step-mother throughout his teen years. But, on his quest to uncover the truth behind his father’s unexpected death, Harry wonders whether he even knows Alice. Can this alluring yet mysterious woman be trusted?

This is my first Peter Swanson read and it certainly will not be the last. I adored his storytelling. It was measured and well-paced, with the plot thickening at just the right speed throughout. I particularly loved the split-time narratives, cleverly revealing the dark secrets of each of the (VERY) disturbed yet enigmatic characters.

Overall, an indisputable 5 ⭐️ read with a highly compelling premise! Would ABSOLUTELY recommend.

Assolutamente consigliato.
