About the author
The Hornings, including various dogs, enjoy life and nature's beauty on a small farm in Freedom, Indiana.
Andrew's day job is in the development of medical imaging/monitoring devices and data technology.
But he has for decades felt compelled to activism for equal ballot access, and against the systemic corruption of our unconstitutional Two Party System. He has written innumerable articles, weekly columns and policy papers for an Indiana policy think tank and Indiana newspapers. In quixotic generality, he's been a not-so-tireless, but certainly enduring advocate for peace, prosperity, liberty and justice for all.
As you can see all around us today, he has not been successful in that latter advocacy.
On a lighter note, he used to be a cartoonist. Most people say he's funny, and he does like a fun story more than he likes politics. And while he holds his expectations very, very low, he nevertheless maintains the highest of hopes that we will somehow, someday, learn to live in peace, prosperity, justice and freedom.

Relighting the Torch is both substantive and well written. Horning makes great points and gives plenty of examples. The book reads with great élan and knowledge. It is also full of relevant quotations, not just memorable Horning prose.
The book is also intellectually honest. It shows that despite the goodness of the U.S. Constitution, i.e. that it is "the best social covenant ever written," both it and the nation's founders were compromised from the start. This impediment has helped obscure that our constitutions exist "to restrain politicians, not citizens," which is to restrain governments' use of force and deceit.
Which leads to my favorite part of this book - Horning's discussion of non-aggression, which is the idea to never initiate force or fraud to achieve one's political or social goals. He shows that this libertarian principle is inherent in the U.S. Constitution, which strictly limits government's use of force to only those powers which are constitutionally enumerated. This is to put "politicians on a leash."
The book's biggest insight for me was Horning's discussion of the unconstitutionality of the two-party system. He shows that the nation's founders were against political parties or sects, and that our present two-party system (and the public's neo-religious if not neurotic belief in it) is the result of deliberate acts by the major parties to exclude alternative voices from State ballots. Horning makes good arguments to end the Federal Reserve, also.
All-in-all, this relatively short and easy to read book should comprise at least part of the consciousness of everyone interested in law and politics. Its discussion is broad, full of substance and non-offensive. It is a breadth of free air, calling us to know and achieve our highest political selves.
If you get overwhelmed when you try to pay attention to politics, read more books and this is a good one.
After I purchased and read my copy, I purchased a couple extras to share with friends.
Really puts our daily life realities into perspective. Smart, sensible, and even a darkly humorous assessment, with an outline on how we can make a difference.
History is laid bare in this book. A classically, but not blindly, patriotic call to action.
Highly recommend!

The author clearly has a strong grasp on our government's history of corruption. I just wish he would have spent more time outlining solutions throughout the book instead of leaving them to the end
In "Relighting The Torch," Andrew Horning deals with these issues. He points out how, almost while the ink on the Constitution was still wet, we moved toward a centralized government. He then includes an annotated Declaration of Independence and Constitution with all the Amendments, concluding with ways to get our country back on track.
I found this book informative, which did not surprise me the least. Horning has run for office as both a Libertarian and a Republican. During one debate, one blogger commented that he would make an excellent teacher on the Constitution and government. I fully agree.
There are few books I can objectively say that I think everyone should read. This is a good example. I wish our leaders would read this and try to get this country back in shape.
