About the author
McClain's always been a storyteller. As a child, she composed plays and forced her friends to act. She'd help rally the neighborhood kids and together they'd re-enact their favorite TV shows. Sadly, when the boys played, she never got to be the heroine--just the damsel in distress. Since then she's discovered the benefits of needing rescue, and so it's a role she prefers.
McClain lived most of her life in rural, upstate New York where taught high school English for more than thirty years. After years of teaching students how to write, she turned her attention to her own novels.
Her latest book is Prodigal Lives--book 2 in the Treasured Lives series. Tangled Lives will be out in spring.

real deal.”
Wow! Carol McClain’s Tangled Lives is a realistic, somewhat gritty look at two sisters’s complicated relationship with each other, then those around them.
Sisters Roxie and Crystal love each other deeply, but both are damaged by their past and their circumstances. Roxie will always feel like she can never attain her goals, only come in second best. Crystal is hampered by her fear of rejection, causing her to be a people-pleaser. What will it take for the girls to see themselves as God does, and value themselves accordingly?
I found Crystal very easy to like with her sweet, compassionate ways. I would love to hear her fiddle! On the other hand, Roxie is mercurial and abrasive, and I didn’t like Jesse much better. I wanted to put those two in separate corners many times.
I appreciated that all of the main characters are Christians, but
I was disappointed by how often they don’t find living out their faith important. If you are looking for a women’s fiction book that shows lots of temptations and how the characters deal with them, you will like this book very much. I would have preferred some temptations not be so well described.
This could possibly be a good book club choice. I know I have a lot of thoughts about different events or actions in the book that it would be fun to get others’ opinion on.
I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I also purchased an ebook copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.
Notable Quotables:
“Boors don’t understand that beneath crutches or skin or mental status, we’re all the same. All important to God.”
“She…was fearfully and wonderfully made, created from the womb to be who she was. Being best was nothing but pride. “
“Seemed God valued people no matter how often they fell. Could I …?”
Roxie and Crystal are very close as sisters. Roxie is a photographer of nature and loves what she does. Life continues looking up for her as she is nearing college graduation, and her longtime boyfriend loves her deeply. In fact, he wants to marry her. Can Roxie put aside her fears and step into marriage with Jesse?
Crystal who has suffered some paralysis her entire life due to her biological parents' drug use, is happy for Roxie and Jesse at times. However, deep down and what she tries to keep hidden is her own feelings of love for Jesse. It is a hard battle and Crystal knows it will be hard to call him brother-in-law.
As in their journey through life already, nothing seems to go according to plan. There are mess ups and fall outs. Things are said in the heat of the moment and things are done in desperation. Many pieces need to be picked up and the picture they thought they were putting together changes dramatically.
I have enjoyed this series and following this family and getting to see what happens to all three of the sisters.
I received a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
We get a glimpse of the background on the sisters which helps readers to see their struggles and need to be accepted. I liked watching the two sisters strengthen their bond while fighting their emotions for each other. With one of the sisters struggling through life with paralysis perhaps the other sister felt left out at times. Their family is a mixture of adoption, rejection and trying to forgive someone who left them years ago.
I liked the story but at times I thought it moved a little slow in certain transitions in the book. In the end I found myself yearning for more about the sisters and less about who gets the boy at the end. The author does write a good story but just missed the mark for me being fully invested in it.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
