The Impossible Dream became a fitting moniker for the Boston Red Sox season of 1967, a summer that still evokes memories of a time that united a city and transformed a franchise. Led by 1967 MVP Carl Yastrzemski and Boston's first Cy Young Award winner, Jim Lonborg, the youngest Red Sox team since the days of Babe Ruth went from ninth to first place in what remains the closest pennant race in baseball history. Tony Conigliaro, Rico Petrocelli, George Scott, Reggie Smith, Billy Rohr, Jerry Adair, and their teammates became household names to the Fenway Faithful as they carried the Red Sox to their first World Series in 21 years under manager Dick Williams.

From Andrew The Baseball Historian

"his captioning provides valuable context, and his introduction to each chapter frames the importance of the season against his own experiences as a young fan dealing with dealing with his brother's deployment in the Vietnam War."

"The collection of photographs that comprises
1967 Red Sox is impressive and comprehensive."

"1967 Red Sox isn't just a baseball book. It is also a book about community and finding ways to cope in difficult times through the redemptive qualities of sport."

Read in its entirety

From Jason Carter The Writer's Journey

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words; these pictures are worth much more to baseball fanatics. To relive the season in Fenway Park with Yaz and Lonnie and
Tony Conigliaro and Reggie Smith and Rico Petrocelli and the many other BoSox, to see them both in the field and in more candid moments in the clubhouse, it is a treasure that Red Sox fans and baseball fans will love.

From Matt Nadel.....MLB Network's Kid Blogger

"Sinibaldi does a great job describing the final weeks of the '67 season without missing any important points that need to be mentioned. Also, the pictures that were chosen were magnificent, and the book as a whole is very good. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to learn a little about the history of the Red Sox, especially that exciting 1967 season (even though the Sox did lose the '67 Series to the Cardinals in seven games). However, even if you know a lot about this topic, you should still go pick up the book."

From the Author

On October 1, 1967 I went with my dad to Fenway Park and watched as our beloved Red Sox defeated the Minnesota Twins to capture their first pennant in 21 years! I was 14 years old. While we were there my brother was fighting in the jungles of Vietnam. Dad's been gone for 16 years now and that day shared with him grows exponentially in meaning to me with each passing year. When I began this book I was struck by the fact that what was the Impossible Dream summer for the Red Sox of 1967, was for many of their fans, the nightmare of Vietnam. Within the book I touch upon that dichotomy and it is my hope that as you read and relive that wonderful Red Sox summer, you remember all those who served, fought and died in Vietnam.

Among Raymond Sinibaldi's passions are baseball and history. His first book, The Babe in Red Stockings was published in 1997 and co-authored with David Hickey and Kerry Keene. A chronology of Babe Ruth’s time with the Red Sox, it gives an in depth account of the first five years of his remarkable career. It would be fifteen years for his second book Images of Fenway Park (2012) again co-authored with Hickey and Keene.

Since then, he has produced one a year: Spring Training in Bradenton and Sarasota (2013), 1967 Red Sox, The Impossible Dream Season (2014), 1975 Red Sox American League Champions (2015). In 2016 came 61 Motivational Stories for Every Coach of Every Sport, Co-authored with longtime baseball coaches Craig Faulkner and Joe Komoaroski.

The year 2017, produced John F Kennedy in New England, which was actually fifty years in the making. Captivated with the fact that his maternal grandfather, William F Kelly, served as Kennedy’s East Boston campaign secretary in 1946 and 1952; the seven year old Sinibaldi's passion was lit during Kennedy’s bid for the presidency. Devastated by the death of the President, he grew with a penchant for anything Kennedy, which would ultimately lead him to the volunteer position of docent at the JFK Library from 1989 through 1992. With the centennial of John F Kennedy’s birth approaching, Sinibaldi reflected upon the formative years of his youth and the impact President Kennedy had on his life. Within that reflection, he realized how much JFK’s life had marked and shaped his own. Thus giving birth to John F Kennedy in New England; in which he captures JFK at home with his family and friends doing what he loved the most: sailing at the tiller of a ship, playing golf, piling kids on a golf cart for a ride to the candy store, simply reading and being President.

In 2018 Sinibaldi returned to his baseball roots with Modern Images of Fenway Park. With 90 photographs never before published, this takes a fresh look at America’s most beloved ballpark. Included will be insight into the making of the Ted Williams Jimmy Fund Statue, for which Sinibaldi served as consultant to sculptor Franc Talarico.

On June 1, 2019 Globe Pequot Publishers released Jackie's Newport; America's First Lady and the City by the Sea. Jackie's Newport provides a fresh look at America's First Lady, unveiling the inner strength, courage and dignity of the woman who still captivates and inspires people around the globe. All woven around the backdrop of Newport, one of her favorite places.

A month later Arcadia Publishing and the History Press unveiled Sinibaldi's John F Kennedy, From Florida to the Moon. Just in time to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Neil Armstrong's "Giant leap for Mankind," Sinibaldi spins the tale of the nascent days of America's space program and JFK's relationship with the Mercury 7.

A regular guest on WBZ radio’s Jordan Rich Show for many years, Sinibaldi was also a part of the special Baseball From the Beginning, A History of Spring Training in Florida (see youtube links) He has twice spoken at the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

Combining skills honed by 26 years in the classroom and an unbridled passion to his subject matter, Sinibaldi is available for book talks and presentations, on any of his books, at your library or organization. He can be reached at

Great look at the team that brought baseball back to Boston.

1967 changed everything for the Sox. They were mediocre in the fifties, possessing a cumulative winning record for the decade but not finishing closer than 10 games out of first after 1950. In the sixties, with Teddie Ballgame's departure, the Sox slid into the obscurity of last place. Fenway was decaying and often nearly empty. Only a few hundred scattered fans were on hand for Dave Morehead's no-hitter and there were numerous open seats for Williams last game.

The 1967 Cardiac Kids changed all of that by overcoming 100 to 1 odds to win a four team pennant race on the final day of the season and ultimately forced a 7 game Series with the Cardinals. Since that time, with the exception of a few down years or bridge years, the Sox have consistently fielded winning teams while developing a national following. Raymond Sinibaldi's book is a wonderful journey back to that fateful, transitional year.

The book is primarily a collection of photos but many of them, it seems, have not been included in other histories. The author also works hard to provide social and political context for the 67 season, dedicating the book to William Sinibaldi who fought in Viet Nam and Ralph Costanzo of New Haven who was killed in the War the day after discovering a mutual passion for the Sox with Raymond's big brother William.

Pitcher Billy Rohr provides the introduction as well as a fascinating anecdote he heard from a war veteran who told him that Topps baseball cards were sometimes found on the bodies of slain Viet Cong soldiers, most likely taken from the bodies of fallen GIs.

The true value of Sinibaldi's labor of love is in the presentation of photos from the season. On page 47, hard-nosed manager Dick Williams is seen "modeling" a dress his wife will wear to the Jimmy Fund dinner. This is above a picture of pitcher John Wyatt, felled on the mound by catcher Bob Tillman's throw to second, with Al Kaline hustling to third in the background. Pages 52 and 53 include action shots with opponents Boog Powell, Brooks Robnson and Rocky Colavito (one of the great names in baseball history.) Colavito's pose as he looks back at the umpire after a third strike is a classic. On page 54/55, we see a very young group including Lonborg, Tony Horton and Reggie Smith smiling after a win across from a photo of Luis Tiant pitching for the Tribe and Smith sitting on second base cleaning the dirt out of his shoe as a pitcher warms up. The best sequence of shots may be on pages 22/23. Rookies Tony C and Tony Oliva pose together. Jim Pagliaroni appears in the obligatory Nun's Day photo. Bobbie and Ted Kennedy are on the field for Opening Day 1964 with Dick Radatz and Eddie Bressoud. And, finally, there is a shot of three players in various stages of bubble blowing, a picture as unlikely to be found today as a game finishing in less than 3 hours.

It is hard not to smile as you thumb through this book even as the author reminds the reader of the backdrop of War and the Sox deplorable history of refusing to sign black players. The Impossible Dream season is almost half a century in the past but its story remains compelling for Red Sox fans and comes alive again in Sinibaldi's book. If you are old enough to remember the Impossible Dream, you will love this book. Newer fans who want to see how the Red Sox current run started can do worse that consult Raymond Sinibaldi.
