GOD IS EVERYWHERE—EVEN AT A DESOLATE NEW MEXICO EXECUTION SITE

David walked through the valley of the shadow of death and feared no evil. Larissa Baxter found herself doing the same.

Although she was new to Christianity, her faith was her stronghold. As she calmly faced her destiny, Larissa was prepared for whatever lay ahead at the end of a long road trip chained in captivity.

On the run from the FBI for a crime she didn't commit, Larissa Baxter
faces an unexpected threat. The secret life she's been living is about
to be exposed, and she's in extreme danger.

Texas bounty hunter Clyde Hopkins, duped by the false promise of a
million dollar reward, begins a relentless search for her. A routine
apprehension then becomes a kidnapping, and Hopkins faces a
life-changing decision--kill or be killed.

With almost certain death now facing Larissa, she's defenseless but for
the strength of her faith.

From the Author

I like to start my stories off with a bang, giving my readers a strong reason to keep reading in the very first paragraph.

My work is also on the lean side. I don't spend a lot of time with vivid description or irrelevant details. I like to keep those pages turning.

Authors are entertainers. We perform on pages rather than stage or screen. We also have a more intimate connection with our audience. Our stories play in the minds of our readers, and hours of our readers' time are devoted exclusively to our works.

I like to start my stories off with a powerful opening sentence, giving my readers a reason to keep reading in the very first paragraph.

I feel like I've been a writer my whole life, inspired by my grandmother telling me stories as I sat on her lap as a child.

The most significant influences on my writing have been Rod Serling and Richard Matheson. I write in the style that I love to read--a strong opening line with fast pacing throughout. I always try not to let my stories lag anywhere by not belaboring my reader with insignificant detail. I've heard more than once from readers who finished my novel in one sitting.

One novel in particular has been a huge influence on me -is A KISS BEFORE DYING by Ira Levin. It's what I try to emulate in my books.

As for my life, I tend to think of myself as someone with an average life, but then I realize that:

I've seen both a ghost and a UFO and didn't believe in either of them before.

I've been lost in a cave.

I've experienced being charged at by two biker-gang types leveling shotguns at me.

I've been involved in a car chase when someone tried to run me off the road.

I've saved someone's life.

I've been questioned in a murder investigation (not as a suspect -- as a witness)

I've been a juror on two murder trials

I've stood face-to-face with a poisonous snake.

Someday I might base a story on one of those!

Exciting read, difficult to put down once you become involved in the story of this woman's unusual life. Strong message of Christian faith!

This book reminds me of John Ford’s famous last shoot in “The Searchers” of a bright outside scene as seen from the inside of a dark room. There, Ethan Edwards, played by John Wayne, stands indecisively at the threshold of his two worlds. He finally decides to step out of the darkness in which he had hitherto lived, into the bright future. For Larissa, that transition is a similarly painful and long drawn-out process.
In this novel, there are two main characters, who offer us plenty of ironic twists. They are parallel characters but running together in opposite directions. Larissa is trying to escape from her dark decadent past, while the bounty hunter is trying to run back into his and her dark past. What both characters share are their unique dark secrets. In another twist, from parallel characters, they become foil characters as they are handcuffed together on their tense road trip. She is a reborn, considerate Christian; he is an unscrupulous, gruff, and cynical opportunist. They don’t see eye-to-eye and this presents an opportunity for witty, incisive conversation, especially when she tries to proselytize. Despite their mutual loathing, ironically they depend on each other for their survival.
The author has regaled us with many ironic relationships; between the hunter and the hunted, where suddenly the hunter finds himself being hunted himself as a result of his own pact with the devil. Then, the relationship morphs into that between captive and captor, where you wonder who actually has the upper hand in this cat-and-mouse race for survival. It is all well-crafted as it is narrated in real-time.
The story is readable and the author has a nice way of framing the story. Consider this telling sentence, for instance, that encapsulates the gist of this novel:
“Larissa Baxter was troubled. Her past was regrettable, her present
untenable, and her future uncertain.”
In the opening chapter, the author defines the stakes of the two protagonists straightaway. Thereafter, a few chapters of backstory follow, to familiarize the reader with how the protagonists found themselves in this desperate conundrum. The first burst of action sets in after about 60 pages of text. Thereafter, there are intermittent bursts of action culminating with the final cliffhanging scene with a Flannery O’Connor touch to it.
The POV is omniscient, and the author delves into the internal thoughts of each of the characters. The novel has the structure of a Venn diagram with four overlapping circles, each one representing the thought pattern of four different characters. So, the pacing of the novel is somewhat slow. There is a fair bit of repetition, which serves to hype up the tension and suspense. It is a psychological drama, in a way. At each juncture, every character is faced with a dilemma. They need to weigh the situation and decide on the appropriate action. This reflects the normal thought pattern of anyone in a crisis situation. The idea fixee becomes dominant in our frantic thought process.
The author also has an eye for detail, the ringtone used by the bounty hunter, the inhaler, the chime of the cuckoo clock, and the magazine giving Larissa an idea about the nature of her abductor. There is much more, and it helps to up the tension.
In my younger days, I enjoyed reading John Buchan’s, “The Thirty-Nine Steps”. An ordinary, innocent citizen with no heroic capabilities finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time and is dragged into a nightmarish situation beyond his control. He has nothing to rely on apart from his survival instinct and his common sense (in this case, Larissa finds solace in her faith, and her determination to do the right thing). He stumbles from one misadventure to another.
It’s no surprise that “The Thirty-Nine Steps” was Alfred Hitchcock’s first major success, and it became the hallmark of all his subsequent movies: an innocent person dragged into a nightmarish scenario where he is considered to be guilty even though he is innocent; the eye for detail to generate suspense; the psychological make-up and dilemmas of the protagonist; the helplessness of the protagonists and her friends; the mistaken identity; the immersion of the viewer into the protagonists’ shoes and thought. It is no exaggeration to say that this novel has all the ingredients of an Alfred Hitchcock-type of drama.
In summary, good story, skillful storytelling. I recommend

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this novel in expectation of an objective review.

OVER THE EDGE by Michael Garrett is full to the brim with suspense, with characters who are flawed and sympathetic in a cat-and-mouse struggle with each other. Garrett, who has been in active in several facets of the publishing industry --- he even merits a mention in ON WRITING by Stephen King --- demonstrates in OVER THE EDGE that, contrary to a well-known axiom, he can both do and teach, as far as writing is concerned. This is a fast and entertaining read that never disappoints.

I'm not generally a suspense reader, but I enjoyed this novel. It is well written, and the characters are real on the page; I see them still. The plot starts slowly, but soon I was in it and had to find out what happened. I especially liked the incorporation of the thoughts on faith from the characters. I often have similar thoughts that guide my actions. The book would make a good movie.

Over the Edge is a fast-paced story that kept my interest from beginning to end. It's so full of suspense, faith, love, and adventure that I didn't want to put it down once I started reading. Through believable characters, the author provides credible lessons of redemption with Jesus Christ and destruction as a consequence of unbelief. The plot is well constructed, and the writing style is satisfying. I especially enjoyed how the characters relied on their faith to get them through life-threatening situations. I give it 5 stars!
