The brave, burning with fire, harnessed the Dragon's Rage....
As the Dragon Heir, seventeen-year-old Kaia inherited the power of flame to protect her homeland from a godlike necromancer’s undead army. But after centuries of peace, the necromancer has faded to myth, and the Dragon Heir is feared by the people. Persecuted and cast out, Kaia struggles to embrace and control her seemingly useless gift while confined to her family’s farm.
But when the necromancer’s undead terrorize the land once again, Kaia runs away to join the battle.
With the help of her childhood rival, the handsome Shadow Heir, and a snarky, cursed cat, Kaia must figure out how to control both her fire and her confidence in time to save Okarria. If she fails, she will sacrifice her family, her new friends, and the enchanting world she has only just begun to see.
And time is running out.

First of all, I have to say that the stunning cover art is what first drew me to Odriel's Heirs. The cover is gorgeous and gave me high expectations for the actual story.
I'm pleased to say that Hayley Reese Chow did not disappoint. With an action-packed plot that kept me on the edge of my seat, incredible characters, and engaging writing style, she had me turning page after page. I could not put this book down and loved every single second of it!
My favorite character was probably Klaus. I loved seeing how the relationship between him and the protagonist, Kaia, progressed throughout the story. Kaia is also an inspirational character. Watching her grow as the book progressed was a wonderful journey to be a part of!
On top of making it hard to put this book down, the author also had me reaching for the tissues on multiple occasions. The amount of emotion this story and the characters provoked was amazing!
There are occasional minor typos, such as missing a period at the end of a couple sentences, but the few there are can easily be overlooked considering the strength of the plot and the writer's impeccable storytelling. I loved the author's voice and her writing style kept me actively engaged and immersed in the story. The details she gave helped painted a perfect picture in my mind of the characters and their surroundings.
Hayley Reese Chow has made her way to the top of my favorite author's list and I will without a doubt be purchasing all future books from this writer!! 100% recommend!!
The familiar beats of the hero’s journey are all there. What sets it apart is the deep characterization of Kaia and Klaus and the engaging prose. Haley Reese Chow is a superb writer who is able to transport a reader to an unfamiliar world yet connect it to experiences and emotions of the everyday. This allows readers to be swept up in an epic tale.
Odriel’s Heirs is an exciting, adventure-filled, epic fantasy with rich archetypes and a detailed world to discover. Kaia Dashul’s story of necromancers and devils is a must-read for all who love sword and sorcery fantasy.
This tale takes place on a fantasy world with fascinating creatures (such as Dalteeks, deer-type animals who can gallop tirelessly while carrying humans). The world is richly built—not just the land and its creatures, but also the magical system, which is really well thought out.
There’s one particular “villain reveal” that I found very satisfying. And several of the characters captured my heart, including Gus, a lovable ragehound.
Kaia and <spoiler redacted> are 100% a couple worth shipping! Loved the romantic subplot.
Worth the read for those who enjoy YA fantasy! 4.5 stars.
Seventeen-year-old Kaia has been training all her life to take over her father’s responsibilities as the next Dragon Heir. Much to her frustration, the villagers want nothing to do with her and treat her with fear and hatred. A teenager with the capability to burn down the entire village if she loses her temper in a Dragon Rage is a too much of a risk for any of the villagers to want her there. And Kaia, very much a teenager, wants very desperately to be like anyone else in the village and live a normal life, even if only to wear a pretty dress and go to a festival.
When a necromancer rises to attack Okarria, Kaia must quickly learn to master her Dragon Fire to fulfill her duty as the Dragon Heir to stop an invasion of the undead Lost. First, she must join the other Heirs and resolve her rivalry with the infuriating Shadow Heir before the Lost overrun and destroy everything she holds dear.
Odriel’s Heirs is a young adult/new adult fantasy novel set in Okarria following on the Dragon Heir, Kaia as she struggles with being a teenager and being one of the chosen ones- Odriel’s Heirs. Controlling fire is fun but having the villagers throw rocks at you as they chase you out of the village is not. I don’t necessarily see the logic in pissing off a person that can fall into a Dragon Rage and explode in a fiery nova but, I guess people in real life have historically used rocks to express anger towards witches so it’s par for course.
Kaia is a reluctant hero and a bit of a hot head. Her inexperience is understandable - she’s still learning to control her powers and her dad is actively fulfilling the duties as the Dragon Heir. Her job is to train and stay out of trouble, so she’s just... Bored. She has dyslexia, so reading is not a preferred hobby. It just means that outside of training, Kaia doesn’t have anything that she likes to do besides having prank wars with the current Shadow Heir, Klaus.
Klaus has taken over his duties as the Shadow Heir (meaning his parent has died) and is frequently tormenting and pranking Kaia by using his Heir powers of invisibility. He constantly pushes Kaia forward, but we don’t know too much about him since our inner perspective is limited to Kaia. Of the party, we spend the most time with Klaus, Shad (an apprentice trapped as a cat for upsetting the mage he serves) and Kaia’s dog, Gus.
As this is the first in a new series, the foundation of the world is built rapidly as the characters progress towards the inevitable clash with the necromancer.
There is a good balance between the world building and forward momentum. Okarria has depth that is alluded to but will likely be more deeply explored in following books. I appreciated that the introduction of new species felt organic with hybrid names using existing animals for context clues for the reader to understand what the animals were. For example, the ragehound is a sheep dog that is in sync with the emotions of its Dragon Heir owner in order to pull them back from a Dragon Rage. There could have been a deeper explanation at the beginning about the history and creation of ragehounds at the beginning of the novel but, our protagonist already knew that information, so we didn’t get that information dump. We understand immediately that Gus is both a childhood companion and an important training tool for a Dragon Heir until they can master control over their powers and emotions.
Odriel’s Heirs has the right mix of lore, action, and personal growth to make Kaia’s hero’s journey from frightened teenager into the Dragon Heir she was destined to be. I look forward to seeing more of Kaia, and Klaus in their next adventure, as there will always be darkness where there is light.
Thank you to Hayley Chow for reaching out to me to review her debut novel!

It is a little predicable but I wouldn't take away stars for that as the world building and story telling is brilliant.
As a first novel, it's an amazing start to Hayley Reese Chow's career and I can't wait to see what she does next.
Kaia is our seventeen-year-old protagonist, who is frustrated with people around her. Her goal has been to one day take over as the next Dragon Heir from her father. However, many fear she has the ability to destroy their village and prefer her, basically, gone. Because of her age, many will understand her emotional upsets that spring up. There will be several downs after the mistreatment from her fellow villagers before Kaia comes to her own.
The author does a fantastic job painting and allowing readers to visualize her world. Since this is the first book in a series, I’m sure there will be more in-depth descriptions in upcoming books.
Tension is high in several scenes where I kept turning the pages to find out what was going to happen.
If you are a fan of high fantasy and female protagonists who rise to the occasion but with pitfalls of despair and hardships, then I highly recommend this book. You have everything from mages, gods, necromancers, and of course, Kaia. Looking forward to the next book.
