Christian apologists work hard to defend the resurrection of Jesus, despite the woefully poor descriptions of the supposed event in the New Testament. I suspect they could also rise to the challenge of proving that the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella really did transform a pumpkin into a carriage. It's no surprise that the apologetic literature defending the resurrection is enormous, but there has been considerable pushback from secular writers-as well as from religious scholars who can live with a metaphorical understanding of the resurrection. But the task for the curious reader-trying to cut through all this clutter-has been made easy by Robert Conner's The Jesus Cult: 2000 Years of the Last Days. As this title suggests, Conner incisively demonstrates that a crucial element in early Christian belief-the arrival of Jesus on the clouds any day now-is just plain wrong. He also pulls together the New Testament texts that show just how incoherent the resurrection stories are: no wonder the apologists have to work so hard. In his engaging conversational writing style, Conner also shows the on-going damage-into our own times-that the Jesus Cult causes. This book is a must-read, especially for Christians who may be curious enough about their faith to do at least a little due diligence.

If you have an open mind and you’re teetering on the edge of dumping religion, this book just might send you over. Authoritative and passionate, Mr Connor makes a very strong case not just for ridding your own life of the strictures of religion, but also for cleansing our society and (especially) our government of the privileged and haughty religious minions who flaunt our laws and walk free. I liked this book. It’s well-written, very readable, profoundly researched and just might make you angry!

Those were the times that shaped so much of our history. Agree or not, books like these help to prepare for a more realistic future.
Lots of what is accepted as contemporary guidance is accepted without question. That's unfortunate. The whole source reads like an
Alternative History! That's a type of writing where "what ifs" inflate an ounce of fact into a lot of camouflaged fiction...
Examples ? In Luke, in the garden, who recorded the prayers when everyone was asleep? Empty storytelling if omitted.
Selling your clothes for weapons? Contrary to all principles. But as a temporary realization that the treasurer has skipped out with the group funds, not so surprising ! Shock realization that this most trusted companion has left and does not agree with the raid on moneychangers - because Judas is a very devoted worshiper. And the moneychangers HAD to raise rates so high because the Temple
had to satisfy the increased greed of the Romans (who were the law enforcement).
The Romans Legion had no need for permission from anyone to kill people. The two killed with the leader are connected with him because these poor guys were scooping up a life's earnings from the spilled tables.
And Peter was one of the recognized table-turners; by strangers who had no knowledge of the group history. But very upset to have the festivities delayed by hooligans. Imagine walking for days to a city so packed that you had nowhere to stay or eat !
AND all the writing here is alternate "history" ! But the core facts are True.

Connor goes into detail about how the Christian religion uses the same methodology of cults, essentially fear and intimidation, to keep adherents believing. It exposes all the subcult prophesies of the second coming, like the many times the Jehovah Witnesses have chosen date after date, along with other groups. He is right, how do you keep the herd in tact after 2,000 years? So toward the end he tells us that many, especially younger Americans, not indoctrinated in religion, are not attending. But, at the same time the churches are becoming more radical. There is the hint within that belief in belief and the reinforcement of fear of the church's authority enables believers to follow Authoritarian leaders, and we are seeing that happen.
This is an excellent read.

Excellent read for anyone searching for truth. Conner deftly uses The Bible to demonstrate its own incoherence and unreliability. Highly recommended for cutting though the fog of nonsense that is Christianity

If you want to read a book against Christianity read this one. But it's a short one with some interesting notions I as a theologian have never seen before.

Using evidence primarily from the New Testament, the author clearly demonstrates the absurdity of the resurrection claim. The book then examines the extensive cruelty practiced in the name of Christianity. The author then reminds the reader that the burden of proof is always on the claimant.

This book was written with about five decades of close association with a "book" a lot of people swear their lives on. But to understand the "book " we need a context the reading of the "book" itself doesn't provide. Well, this is the book that will surely fill that gap.

The book had some text and some ideas repeat a few times. Those small wrinkles could have been smoothed out.
