Steve and Pam realized that the "cookie cutter" mode of treatment was not effective and needed to change. Instead of simply adding on to what was already being done, they deconstructed treatment and started looking at it much differently.

After extensive research, they saw that it was not merely genetics, frequency, intensity, duration, consequences/shame, trauma/co-existing disorders or physical problems. It was actually all or a combination of these in different degrees. This meant delving deeply within and evaluating the person to develop an individualized plan. For years the Multi Modal Recovery Process was used during treatment which led to viewing treatment in a totally new way, that at times, even startled them. It not only made sense, it worked. With the Natural Pathways of Recovery, they have brought their revolutionary practice to very reader interested in seeing recovery through a different lens.

This book is intended to be thought-provoking and life changing for the world of recovery. Natural Pathways of Recovery offers a fresh and new way to not only look at Substance Use Disorders, but the manner in which they should be treated. By using The Star Matrix System, it is possible for us to see that each person's path to treatment is unique and you can get better.

Pam Moore is a licensed clinical social worker in private practice in Birmingham, Alabama. She and her husband Steve co-founded The Moore Institute in 1999 to provide an integrative counseling center that, in addition to traditional psychotherapy, would address issues that addicts and their families struggle with in a non-judgmental and caring manner. Over time, the center has grown to house The Addiction Research Foundation, which Pam co-founded, that looks to find the best practices to treat addiction and The Addiction Recovery Intensive. Pam Moore knows what it’s like to struggle in the darkness. She likens her own early life to living in a land full of dragons. She suffered through unspeakable trauma with no one to turn to. Her new work shows you that you don’t have to suffer through similar situations alone. She offers hope and light for anyone living through a long, dark night.

Steve Co-founded both the Moore Institute and the Addiction Research Foundation along with his wife and partner, Pam Moore. He received a Masters of Social Work with honors from the University of Alabama in May 1999. Since that that time he has trained extensively in both addiction and relationship therapies. He is a principal therapist at The Moore Institute and is interested in all aspects of relationship and addiction. Steve uses a highly individualized approach to therapy which utilizes complementary methodologies and techniques which he has developed through his years of practice. His approach to therapy is based on his multi-modal process, which is a strengths and collaborative methodology. Steve believes that you can experience a more fulfilling and meaningful life. Steve is a sought Public Speaker throughout the country for his expertise on addiction and relationship issues.

Pam and Steve opened C3 at The Moore Institute, which serves as a community center that offers yoga, workshops and alternative recovery meetings to people in their community. Pam gives workshops on The Method, published a mini guide to The Method in 2015 and wrote a meditative journal titled inward to the Kingdom, A Six Week Journey. Pam finds her greatest inspiration through her relationship with her husband and daughter.

In 2018, Pam came out with the book Show Me the Way. In this book, Moore tackles the toxic thoughts that get stuck in your head and lead to addictive behaviors. She shows how she broke her own chain of fearful and anxious thoughts and how she works every day to consciously consider how these beliefs affect her actions and behaviors. In 2021 she wrote a book with her husband, Steve Moore, addressing recovering issues.

I am in long time recovery and struggled with enumerable set backs at the beginning of this journey. The 12-Steps program has it value and is a viable tool in the recovery process. (A Tool) It was part of my process on the front end, but I hit a ceiling. I got sponsors, studied the big book, went to meetings, did service work, worked with others a few years.
I worked the steps honestly as I was directed by my sponsors. I would have periods of reprieve but returned to my mind altering substances of choice. I begin to wonder why was I losing this battle. After many teachers, and mentors, and counselors (spiritual and secular) outside of the 12-Step Construct I found freedom.
I believe this book explaining The Star Matrix Assessment and the Multi Model Recovery Process developed by Steve and Pam Moore could have reduced the time I was suffering as I was doing my own research. (Smile) This program could have lifted the guilt I was feeling because the traditional 12-Step program wasn’t working alone for me. Hopefully this skillful work presented by the Moore’s can be a gateway to your freedom.

Not only is this a GREAT book for anyone struggling with a Substance Use Disorder (SUD) - or anyone who has a loved one with SUD, this book SHOULD BE READ BY EVERYONE IN THE ADDICTION TREATMENT PROFESSION! Regardless of past failures (or limited successes), this book lets you know there is more than one way to tackle the problem. It provides a method for identifying the actual problem(s) and ways of creating personalized recovery plans. If traditional approaches haven't worked, don't despair. There are many paths to recovery. This book can help you find yours!

I have know Steve and Pam Moore for many years. This is a tremendous book about the many faces of addiction and their very capable approach to treat each person according to their particular needs. Not everyone can be successful with the 12 step programs the are most common. People do get better and generally find their own way with many programs that we have today! This is a Tremendous Resource for anyone interested and willing to do the work of Recovery. Jim Heacock

Reading this gives me hope for those I love who have substance abuse problems. They speak of an individualized approach for each person. My experience is most programs are working from the end goal backwards. The authors speak about meeting the client where they are and crafting a way forward.

I’m so grateful that I found this book and this approach to substance use! It seems so much more logical and open-minded compared to other approaches I’ve tried. It presents the information in a way that makes me feel like my opinion matters. I would strongly recommend for anyone that hasn’t had success with traditional treatment models or wants to see how else they can get better!

The authors understand the nuances of recovery and have developed a method that takes the entire person into consideration instead of the traditional one size fits all approach.
