Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The high-profile Shatner (see Tek Power in "Fiction") follows up the best-selling Star TrekR Memories with a behind-the-scenes look at all seven Star TrekR movies, including the one premiering this Thanksgiving.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Timed nicely to coincide with Captain Kirk's upcoming, long-overdue death (in the November release of the first Next Generation movie, Generations), here are Shatner's accounts of what went on behind the scenes of each of the movies to date. In the early 1970s, Gene Roddenberry wanted to do a Star Trek film but couldn't find financial backing; moreover, he was an abysmal writer, and the scripts he churned out simply weren't compelling. Studio executives underestimated--as did Shatner--the ongoing charm of the original series, however, as well as the filmgoing public's general appetite for science fiction (e.g., the epics of Spielberg and Lucas). By the time the sleeping giant that was Star Trek stumbled to its feet, it had some catching up to do, and the first of the new series, released in 1979, was a dud. Nonetheless Trekkers (not Trekkies) went crazy. Once writer Rick Berman came onboard, the films became--well, not bad. Shatner is his usual hammy self here, and he hints that he may not truly be dead after Generations. But he's always entertaining and even introspective as he contemplates growing older and getting a divorce and conveys his regrets about alienating his colleagues--particularly James Doohan (Scotty). An able sequel to Shatner's Star Trek Memories. Also of interest may be Star Trek, Where No One Has Gone Before: A History in Pictures from Pocket Books ($45, 0-671-51149-1), a coffee-table effort covering every permutation of the show, even the animated. John Mort

I really enjoy any story that goes behind the scenes of movie history. This is a good one about the Star Trek Movies, the creation of script wars. The issues on filming the movies. The interaction of producers directors and cast are very informative and. Enjoyable to learn about,

"With back-to-back blockbusters now bulging from our vest pockets, we of the Starship ENTERPRISE suddenly found ourselves extremely popular around the Paramount lot...."

That was after the releases of STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN and STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK. And they were followed by STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME, an even bigger hit. But all seven of the Star Trek movies that author William Shatner starred in reaped a profit. Including the budget-bloated, special-effects-heavy-but-boring first movie, STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, as well as the critically slammed movie that Shatner directed, STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER. According to Wikipedia, STAR TREK: GENERATIONS, the seventh movie, was produced with a budget of $35 million, and it grossed over $118 million.

So this is one of Hollywood's big success stories, which is one of the reasons it was an easy read. From my hole in a skid-row hotel, I got a peek at those who bask in the spotlight. Yet it was not always easy for them. For example, the bitterness that arose regarding the writing credits for STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY, and the exhausting heat that Shatner and actor Malcolm McDowell had to endure in Nevada's Valley of Fire.

Written for everyone, STAR TREK MOVIE MEMORIES is not a turgid work of scholarship, hidden on a dusty bottom shelf in a film-school library. The fast-paced prose is leavened with superlatives, crammed with anecdotes, and spiced here and there with a familiar four-lettered synonym for "copulate." And its verisimilitude--which of course is not perfect--is helped by frequent insertions of Shatner's in-person interviews.

An index would have benefitted readers wishing to refer back to this cornucopia of gossipy facts, and since laziness is the only reason for such an omission, I feel like subtracting a star from my rating. But, even though I have preceded this reading with six other Star Trek books of nonfiction, STAR TREK MOVIE MEMORIES was a solid source of new information.

Look, I get it. I’m a Trekkie through and through. And I don’t give a zit on a Klingon’s butt what a jerk Roddenberry was, who screwed who and with what. I loved that to the end, he fought for his vision, as has everyone involved with the show. What Star Trek was and for me always a connection to a nerdy kid in glasses who loved a good story. Shatner’s recollections in this book are now insisting that a spend a hundred hours or so rewatching EVERYTHING!

Good info on the making of the 6 original series cast Star Trek movies, plus some insights on “Generations” also.

It is cool to find out all the behind the scenes negotiation and business side, plus the creative idea process behind the movies. Sad to find out that the rumors of Gene Roddenberry being marginalized were true. Well he created it and no one can take that away form him.

If you love TOS Star Trek, and some business side info, you will enjoy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin: Star Trek Movie Memories
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 28, 2019
Companion book to Shatner's Star Trek memories. This book does exactly what it says on the tin. You can here Shatner's self gratifying voice in the writing which can be divisive depending on your point of view, however he does get the lowdown from a number of key players in all seven on the classic crews big screen outings.

Definitely a must read for any TOS movie fans. Not as good as the one for the TV show, but great nonetheless during a magical run of movies.
