Through a series of essays, Mary Ann lays out the time spent caring for her parents. She goes back in time to illuminate her parents origin stories as well as hers to define the relationships and then brings the story into present day. The book takes us on the emotional journey of caring for parents in their final stages of life.

Dementia Dolls was such an enjoyable read, despite the difficult subject matter. Dementia is a cruel disease for both the patient and their loved ones, but the author managed to turn a difficult situation into a journey of both personal growth and special bonding with her mother. As a nurse, I've dealt with dementia patients more times than I can count, but I did not really understand the struggle for the family members until reading this book. I also found myself laughing out loud several times as I read some of the antecdotes, and felt like I knew this family personally by the time I finished. Heartfelt and heartwarming!

This book tells the fascinating story of Josephine's life and chronicles the struggles of her daughter, Mary Ann, as she tries to support mother's journey from independence to dementia and still be a good mother/wife/friend/daughter. The book is filled with joy and sadness as well as perseverance and regret. Both Mary Ann and Josephine are imperfectly perfect and delightful.

This touching narrative tells the story of Mary Ann's coming to terms with her parent's aging and her mother's dementia. When she can no longer care for herself, her mother moves in with Mary Ann's family, impacting everyone's life and causing a cascade of emotions. The story weaves history with present day and is beautifully told, keeping the reader engaged. Although it's a personal story, it's easy relatable to anyone interested in the dynamics of caring for a parent or older loved one.
