Despite some significant and some not so significant differences between Bible translations, most are laid out very much in the same way, and are products of translational committees. In the process, much of the literary brilliance and texture within the Bible somehow gets translated away, and the reader is left unaware of what is being missed. What Joel Edmund Anderson has tried to do in this personal translation of the New Testament is to bring out into English much of that literary texture and imagery that is in the Greek. Joel Edmund Anderson (MA, MA, PhD) spent much of his career teaching English Literature and Bible at the high school level, and is now an adjunct professor in Religious Studies at the University of North Alabama. This translation (the JAV), is his attempt to highlight the literary artistry of the New Testament that gets lost in most English translations. He rearranges the order of the New Testament books and includes introductory articles on the nature of the Bible, the Intertestamental period, first century Judaism, as well as brief background articles on the individual books of the New Testament. Hopefully, the JAV will provoke thought and discussion among its readers.

About the Author

Joel Edmund Anderson is an adjunct professor in Religious Studies at the University of North Alabama, where he teaches various courses on the Old Testament. Before that, he taught for 16 years at various Evangelical Christian high schools in California, Arkansas, and Alabama, teaching English Literature, Bible, Church History, and Worldview. He has written a number of articles for Biblical Theology Bulletin, Journal for the Evangelical Study of the Old Testament, and Currents in Biblical Research. Anderson has authored a variety of books: The Heresy of Ham, which analyzes young earth creationism; Getting Schooled, which chronicles his adventures as a high school teacher; and Up Until August, a book of poems. He also maintains a blog, resurrecting orthodoxy (at joeledmundanderson.com), where he writes on a variety of topics, from Biblical Studies, Church History, the New Atheist Movement, Young Earth Creationism, and other topics related to Christianity. Anderson holds a B.S. Ed. in English from Northwest Missouri State University, an M.A. in Theological Studies from Regent College, an M.A. in Old Testament Studies from Trinity Western University, and a Ph.D. in Old Testament from University of Pretoria.

Joel Edmund Anderson grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, and teaching has taken him to places across the country and around the globe. He spent 16 years teaching English and Bible in various high schools, and is now an adjunct professor in college. He has a BS.Ed. in English, a M.A. in Theological Studies, a M.A. in the Old Testament, and a PhD in the Old Testament.

The preface alone is worth the $12. In it Dr. Anderson discusses ideas about what the Bible is and isn't and the role it plays in the life of a Christ-follower. He also fills us in on what transpired between the writing of the old and new testaments. In just a few pages I learned SO much about the political and religious context of the New Testament. I'm so thankful for that information and it helps me read the New Testament with a clearer understanding of its first audience.

I have read many of my favorite New Testament passages and am delighted by the attention paid to intentional word choice by the author and how that comes through in this translation. One quick example I noticed: the rich young man in Mark 10:17-31. The JAV describes Jesus as "clearly seeing who [the rich young man] was." In the next paragraph as Jesus explains what just happened to his shocked and overwhelmed disciples he is "seeing them clearly" too.

Great translation; I look forward to reading it cover-to-cover.
