Pauper Paper is a sad character because his page is blank. Procrastinating Pencil lacks the confidence to begin. He believes coming up with ideas is too difficult. These characters personify the feelings of many children who lack the self-confidence to write. Paper persists in his quest. Eventually other classroom tools combine with Paper and Pencil to get the job done.
I particularly liked the challenging vocabulary included in the rhymes with a glossary at the end that allows readers to expand their own vocabulary. Calabrese provides story starter ideas and resources that can be utilized by students and their teachers.
As a children’s book author and educator with forty years of experience working with young children, I highly recommend this book for elementary school classrooms.
Not a bad idea for writers and readers alike. This story advances creativity, vocabulary (with an excellent and helpful glossary) and teamwork.
I was provided a copy of this book, but was not required to review it.
