Open House: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 643 ratings

BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Elizabeth Berg's Once Upon a Time, There Was You.

In this superb novel by the beloved author of
Talk Before Sleep, The Pull of the Moon, and Until the Real Thing Comes Along, a woman re-creates her life after divorce by opening up her house and her heart.

Samantha's husband has left her, and after a spree of overcharging at Tiffany's, she settles down to reconstruct a life for herself and her eleven-year-old son. Her eccentric mother tries to help by fixing her up with dates, but a more pressing problem is money. To meet her mortgage payments, Sam decides to take in boarders. The first is an older woman who offers sage advice and sorely needed comfort; the second, a maladjusted student, is not quite so helpful. A new friend, King, an untraditional man, suggests that Samantha get out, get going, get work. But her real work is this: In order to emerge from grief and the past, she has to learn how to make her own happiness. In order to really see people, she has to look within her heart. And in order to know who she is, she has to remember—and reclaim—the person she used to be, long before she became someone else in an effort to save her marriage.

Open House is a love story about what can blossom between a man and a woman, and within a woman herself.

A little sappy at the beginning but I enjoyed the last two third of the story. I'll look into reading more of her books.

I liked this book because of the writing. It flowed well and some of the description that the author uses to bring you is unique and very well done. For me, the book flowed a little predictably which is something I do not like. I like a plot and story to lead me along and surprise me and with this I knew just about everything that would happen sometimes well before it did. That being said it is a great book for a woman that is currently going through a divorce. I know that when I was going through mine, I was hungry for anything that understood pain. This book understands your pain while it entertains you and its a message is a good one.

This novel touched me deeply and cleanly, leaving me sitting here with tears descending in response to the beauty of a life lived honestly. Something about this story of love lost and the unraveling of the old story in order to knit something new speaks to my profound faith in all of us as we seek love and something true. Elizabeth Berg is a master of the simple story well told, her gaze lingers on what matters. I feel better off for having read this.

A truth of this novel. You may go through trying times but you will find your way back. Be stronger and better for it. Find a different happiness you didn't expect or know you needed.

Really good depiction of a woman trying to adjust after her husband leaves her. Berg is a very good writer, a keen observer of humans, and she has a wicked sense of humor. Who doesn't love the idea of a woman taking in boarders and turning them into family? Plus a happy ending.

I enjoyed it. Good character building. Easy read.

It's annoying to have to write a review just so I can read the last few pages.

Novel was well written and easy to follow. I enjoyed the tone as it added a hint of humour to a serious topic. The predicable nature of the plot was a little disappointing.
