Editorial Reviews
From the Inside Flap
‘The author has had a great deal of hands-on experience at the coalface of preparing and responding to claims and this oozes from the pages….essential reading for anyone who is preparing a claim for the first time. For those of us with experience aplenty, the book provides an excellent aide-memoire and will ensure that nothing is missed.…I like the book and have no hesitation in recommending it to students, beginners, those involved on a day-to-day basis with time and cost on projects, as well as the seasoned claims consultants.’ Roger Knowles
The book examines the different types of claim common to construction contracts and presents a step-by-step guide to demonstrate the process of building up the submission of a claim.
It includes guidelines on setting out the claim, section by section, to ensure that the essentials of a successful claim are included. Worked examples of claims for variations, extensions of time and additional payment are given together with sample wording showing precisely how the claim may be presented in a manner which will lead the reviewer to a logical conclusion - or at least contain a persuasive argument to support the claimant’s case.
The vast majority of claims are managed without the need to resort to case law or legal matters. Construction Claims & Responses: effective writing & presentation therefore discusses what the claim is trying to achieve and how to do this logically and persuasively. This is a practical, hands-on guide for the construction industry professional which explains how to approach the preparation of the claim document, what topics to cover, how to present the essential elements and how to compile the submission document into a user-friendly and comprehensive document.
For construction project personnel worldwide who need to review such submissions - from all sides, contractors, subcontractors, consultants and client – the author advises how to prepare responses which set out the respondent’s counter arguments, points of view and determinations.
For this Second Edition, the guidance has been updated and the text improved, incorporating feedback from readers, including a new chapter on contract administration for claims. Also new is additional material covering explanations, summaries and conclusions in narrative writing. The additional material is included as a result of feedback received from the successful course run by the author via his Claims Class distance learning course.

Moreover, having attended Hewitt's online "perfect claim intermediate e-course", I can confirm the consistency between the book and the course. The e-course served to enrich my understanding of the book's content, further elaborating on how to produce the perfect claim.
The book's clear writing style and presentation make complex concepts readily accessible, whether you're a contract specialist or a delay analyst. The practical tools and techniques presented, informed by Hewitt's extensive industry experience, equip readers with the skills necessary to handle claim scenarios effectively.
Overall, this book and the e-course are must-haves for professionals in the construction contract field, serving as critical tools in the successful navigation of construction claims.
When I received this book by post, I was enlightened first by the handiness and pleasing appearance and the contents of the book recorded in the Content Page. Introduction of the Author - Andy Hewitt and the Forward written by Roger Knowles - a renowned claim & Contract consultant, build high confidence on the readers at the outset. The book has been written from the beginning to the end with simple language and commendable writing style. Before receiving this book, I had prepared and presented many construction claims during past number of years. Though they were accepted by clients without any adverse comment or remark, when the methodology and the style of such
presentations shown in this book are considered, I have to accept my presentations were far below the standard.
Commencing from Chapter 1 on Introduction and ending with Chapter 11 - A Note on Dispute Boards, Andy Hewitt has gifted us a marvelous publication, anybody dealing with claims to be studied and used as a valuable reference book.
Easy to read and understand even for non-native speakers, like me, of the English language.
I am getting a lot of benefit from it as well as the fact of participating in one of the courses taught by Andy since, having a fluid exchange of opinions with a person with his knowledge and ability to transmit it, is invaluable.

This book provides valuable guidance on how to save time using adjustable template and check lists in each step of the preparation process. In addition, the book addresses some effective presentation techniques rendering the reviewer’s job easy.
The author stresses the necessity of using the CEES technique (Cause – Effect – Entitlement – Substantiation) in a standardized way to demonstrate entitlement to compensation relying on project program analysis and accurate records.
The book contains an in-depth strategy on how to use contract provisions, with a focus on the FIDIC contract, to supporting or defending construction claims.
Surveys report that claims result in approximate 6% of avoidable costs in construction projects; this is why, such a book is a valuable guidance on how to save portion of these costs.
