All About Madam C.J. Walker Kindle Edition
Born Sarah Breedlove, she was the first person born free in her family. She married Charles Joseph Walker and became known as Madam C. J. Walker, the name she would later use on her haircare products.
After talking with her brothers, who were barbers, and experiencing problems with hair loss, she developed a formula that healed scalp infections. This inspired her to start her own line of hair care products to do things like reduce dandruff, grow longer hair, smooth hair, or prevent baldness. Her company employed thousands of door-to-door saleswomen from all over the United States and the Caribbean.
She supported the African American community by making a significant contribution for a new YMCA building in Indianapolis, funding scholarships for the Tuskegee Institute and Daytona Normal Institute for Girls, and becoming a patron of the arts in the early years of the Harlem Renaissance.
Her hair care products are still produced today by Sephora and her story was the inspiration to the Netflix series Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker and the adult biography On Her Own Ground, both also written by Madam C.J. Walker’s great-great-granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles.

About the author
A'Lelia Bundles'a fifth book -- Joy Goddess of Harlem: A'Lelia Walker and the Harlem Renaissance -- will be published by Scribner in June 2024. This revealing new biography will reframe the narrative of Walker's international travels, philanthropy, parties and friendships with some of the most famous musicians, writers, actors and artists of the 1920s. On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker (Lisa Drew Books/Scribner) was a NY Times 2001 Notable Book, a Hurston-Wright/Borders Books Legacy Award finalist and named the 2001 best book on black women's history by the Association of Black Women Historians.
On Her Own Ground is a work of non-fiction with carefully researched and documented facts about Walker's life. "Self Made," the four-part Netflix series that premiered on March 20, 2020, was "inspired by" On Her Own Ground. The Hollywood version is entertaining but not historically accurate.
Bundles's most recent book, All about Madam C. J. Walker, was published by Cardinal Publishing/Blue River Press in 2018 as a young adult biography. Madam C. J. Walker: Entrepreneur--also a young adult biography and the first book length treatment of Walker's life--received an American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation in 1992. A revised edition was published by Chelsea House in 2008. Madam Walker Theatre Center: An Indianapolis Treasure--filled with 200 vintage photographs of Madam Walker and the two National Historic Landmarks associated with her legacy--was released in October 2013 by Arcadia Publishing. Her essay, "The Armor We Still Need," is included in Rochelle Riley's The Burden: African Americans and the Enduring Impact of Slavery (Wayne State University Press, February 2018).
Bundles is a former network television executive and producer, who enjoyed a 30 year career with ABC News and NBC News. She is chairman emerita of the National Archives Foundation board, a vice chairman emerita of Columbia University's board of trustees, a member of several boards including Indiana Landmarks, the Indiana Historical Society's content committee, the Schlesinger Library at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University, the March on Washington Film Festival and the Smithsonian's American Women's History Initiative.

Madame C.J. Walker's life story was very necessary to tell. It gives insight of a determined ,hard working young girl that had, trials hardships and, very hard upbringing.
While on her journey as a woman of color, she keep the faith, working towards earning her place of becoming the 1st female millionaire. I'm so humbled and honored to have walked in her footsteps through her journey. Her story helped me to always remember my journey of dedication, love of helping others and strong Faith in God.
Thank you,
Ms. C.R.S.
