I pulled up anchor at 18 and joined the Navy to escape a small town in the middle of the Mojave desert. Through many twists and turns I made my way north to Alaska. I came for a job, but I stayed for the adventure. When I 'm not playing with live electricity, I'm writing about my adventures from our off-grid cabin in the tiny community of Chicken, AK. I draw on my experiences in the Navy and as a woman in STEM to create interesting stories in the realm of horror, romantic suspense, paranormal thriller and historical fiction.

Very Well Written and Exciting
Very well written. The author draws the reader in right from the start and the action keeps up throughout. Vivid descriptions put the reader right in the Frigid Alaska Wilderness with the protagonists. The characters are well developed through the story without taking away from the action. I read cover to cover in one night as I couldn't put down the book and I can't wait for a sequel!!

I very much enjoyed Dark Lands!

This book was thrilling and kept me at the edge of my seat. The action scenes were well crafted and the dialogue felt natural and organic. Shepard has a way of making the characters come alive, so that it feels like she is talking about real life people, without taking forever to accomplish it.

Rose has taken on the task of attempting to locate clues into the mysterious—and brutal—death of her foster mother. Ulrik, a man she's known since childhood, joins the hunt. They are both pursued by evil creatures as they try to stay alive, but also still get to the bottom of the deaths and disappearances of people close to them. The evil creatures, The Tailed-Men, will stop at nothing to get to Rose.

A story with all that alone would be compelling enough, but then Shepard through in an underlying romance, with a nice sex scene to boot!

All the components together create a well written, fast, suspenseful read. This novella is perfect to consume in one sitting and definitely left me wanting to read the sequel!

DM Sheppard’s The Dark Land is an adrenaline-charged ride that takes place in the desolate frontier of Alaska. The story is rich with detail that transports you to this unique setting that is both rugged and beautiful, and it serves as the perfect backdrop for a horror story.

You can’t help but connect with and root for the main characters Rose and Ulrik, who are equal parts likable, realistic and salt of the earth. The author coaxed out their individual personality traits without the accompanying exposition, rather arriving at it organically through the way they interacted with each other and how they reacted to the antagonists in the story, which prevented the story from ever becoming bogged down.

It was a compulsive read for me and one of my favorite horror stories I’ve read in a while. I would highly recommend it and look forward to reading more from this up and coming author.

Dark Land by DM Shepard is an intriguing story. Shepard maintains a good pace through the telling of this tale, which takes the reader on increasingly more sinister turns.

The artfully woven descriptions of the Alaskan backcountry served to lend a rich texture to Sherhard’s writing without detracting from the thread of the story.

The romance which develops between the two main characters rather turns into a pleasant surprise, and provided, for me, a balance of respite from the dark tone of the story.

The ending surprised me in several ways, and looking back, I would call it brilliant.

I do have to keep reminding myself this was fiction.

Excellent, short, fun, suspense & horror read, with a nice touch of romance.

This was a very quick, but enjoyable read. The story is set in the Alaskan Backcountry, and weaves a mysterious tale revolving around the disappearance of a hunter in the beginning of the story and delves into an ancient folklore which alludes to his disappearance.

The main characters are very vividly described in order to understand their backstory helping the reader develop a connection to the characters. The author does an excellent job building suspense in the story. As the events unravel, it becomes apparent that the folklore is more fact than fiction, and you develop a real connection to the main characters as they proceed in their quest.

In the end, the author ties all the characters and events together with finesse, and although the ending is a bit gory, it wraps up several questions brought out during the storyline. After the main story is complete, the author adds a short epilogue which serves to allude to possible sequels to this story.

If you’re a fan of suspense and or thriller novels, I would recommend this as a short, but enjoyable read.

This is a good read. I have spent a lot of time in the Alaska back country as this author has. It shows in her writing. This book is worth a lot more than what you're selling it for. Good job.

I received a copy of The Dark Land in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

The Dark Land is an action-packed journey in the backcountry of Alaska. The reader is transported to the Last Frontier - somewhere that I've always been fascinated with. Many people go missing in the wild and what's more wild and rugged than Alaska - the perfect backdrop for horror and mystery.

The characters are relatable and likable. Rose is equal parts feminine and badass and doesn't need a man to take care of her, but Ulrik is there by her side when she needs it most. Also, there are fluffy dogs with awesome names and clearly the author loves Norse mythology which is always a win in my book.

Really enjoyed this quick read. I love horror, mythology, and things that go bump in the night. It truly showed that you can pack a large punch in a small package. Looking forward to more stories about the spooky things in Alaska from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars I love a story that shocks me immediately

The Dark Land is fast paced, creepy, and nerve wracking. The terror wrought by the ancient evil set against the backdrop of the Alaskan winter landscape is stark and chilling.

The chemistry between Rose and Ulrik is a slow burn that escalates steadily. I love these characters, individually and as a couple. Rose is strong, smart, and fiercely capable. Ulrik is an excellent match for her; he balances is need to be protective of her with a healthy respect for her ability to handle herself.
