Fly Twice Backward: Fresh Starts in Times of Troubles Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 33 ratings

You wake back in early adolescence, adult memories intact, including ones that could make you very wealthy and influential as you age back. Your birth family is here, alive again, though your later families are gone, perhaps forever. But what has happened, what can you do, about looming concerns like corruption, ignorance, abuse, pollution, disease, and global warming?

You realize one key figures in most, maybe all--the fundamentalist strains of all the major religions, disdaining science, equality, and social welfare. You see that there are some things you can change, some you can’t, and one you don’t dare to.

Fellow idealists help you get information and spend your growing fortune well--such as:

★ An artistic Zoroastrian prince in the Iranian oil industry,

★ A rising officer in the Soviet army working to find a way to destroy his bullying absolutist government,

★ A Bahai woman struggling against Islamic brutality, Soviet treachery, and environmental destruction, loved by both the prince and the officer,

★ A Peruvian leader working from his deep heritage, for a liberal future,

★ A Jewish woman aghast at Zionist zealots’ intemperance,

★ A snake-handling Christian minister, grappling with doubts, sexuality, and destiny.

★ Nigerian teachers striving against religious conflict,

★ A pair of Indian officers, loving the long past, striving for a fair future,

★ They are supported by an ally who develops essential psychic powers.

Across the globe, the group faces familiar-looking corrupt politicians, religious leaders, and corporate czars, but there is an ancient force in the background, promoting greed, violence, hate, and fear.

This exciting, emotional, thoughtful, humorous, even romantic sci-fi weaves progressivism, music, movies, literature into a mind-bending multi-media novel!

David McCracken was born in Louisville, KY, in 1940. Raised mostly in Winchester, KY, he now lives in Northern Virginia, with his third and final wife. He has three children, two stepchildren, and six grandchildren.

After three years in the U.S. Navy following a lackluster academic start, he graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1963, in Diplomacy and International Commerce. He then worked as a Latin American country desk officer in the U.S. Department of Commerce until he returned to school to earn an M.A. in Elementary Education in 1970 from Murray State University, having always been intending to teach. Eventually realizing his children qualified for reduced-price lunches based on his own teaching salary, he studied computer programming at Northern Virginia Community College and worked as a programmer until shifting back into elementary teaching.

He began working on what became Fly Twice Backward in 1983 and finally finished it in 2019! At 79, David strongly doubts he’ll be doing another novel of such scope and complexity, but is preparing to work on a children’s science fiction novel with a progressive bent, being a devout progressive in politics and religion, as well as a lover of learning.

Wow! What a story! “Fly Twice Backward: Fresh Starts in Times of Troubles” by David McCracken is one of the most thought-provoking sci-fi novels I’ve read in a long time. This author makes you think! What would you do if you had the chance to change the future? There are so many twists and turns in this book that you won’t see coming, as well as some humor and delicious romance. What a trip it was! The characters here were vividly portrayed, and I felt I was right there with them. One character in particular was an older man who fell asleep, but he was a kid again when he woke up. Now, personally, I’ve always wanted to experience that because I had a wonderful childhood and wish I could go back and re-live it. This man’s parents were back, he’s back in the house he grew up in, in the room that was his. But the ironic part was that he remembered everything up to his current age. What would you do if you could turn back the hands of time? What did this man do? I won’t give it away because I don’t want to spoil it for you, but trust me, this is an enjoyable read. You don’t want to miss it.

I found myself rushing through each page because I wanted to see what happened next. Before I knew it, I was at the end of the book, hoping for more, and hoping this talented author would write a sequel.
I highly recommend this book to everyone. It’s exciting; it moves at a steady pace; it’s mind-boggling; it’s something you won’t want to put down.

Fly back twice is a part sci-fi that co-insides with history and events that occurred starting in the early 60's. The story starts out with David as the main character who at the age of 62 he falls back into time to the age of 12. Once David realizes that it is not a dream he starts to change the way he treats his family. David reveals to his parents that he has fallen back in time and starts revealing to his parents future events that will take place. His father believes him right away but his mother takes a little longer to believe until events actually started to happen. They keep it between themselves to keep the family safe.

David uses his knowledge of the stock trading market and shares it with his dad and they makes millions over the years which he uses to make more money and use it for good. At some point he encounters and meets his wife Moria whom he marries all over again. Moria also fell back at the same time and also remembers everything. Their son Brent eventually falls back but he falls back in the womb. It is Brent who reveals how they all fell back.

The other characters all intertwine with each other throughout the book. Daivd, Moria and Brent never return to the future and all stay in the past. The book is written all in diary form for all the characters. It is fairly fast paced and slow in other parts, but does keep you reading. Its a pretty cool idea if we could actually fall back into the past. Just think how you could do things differently or even change events and change the future. The only draw back to the book is that it is an extremely long read.

Forty-some years ago my uncle gave me a science fiction anthology. It was a thick red hardback that I read from cover to cover. It inspired a lifelong love of the genre. The stories in that book made me think outside the box. They filled me with awe for the imagination it took to write them. That book still remains in my collection today. The title is OMNIBUS OF SCIENCE FICTION, edited by Groff Conklin, a well-known and prolific editor of the genre. It was published in 1952, the Golden Age of Science Fiction. It’s a substantial volume, 562 pages, with 43 stories divided into sections relating to a common theme. Some stories are fun, some are thought-provoking, and some are adventurous. I love them all.

Fly Twice Backward by David McCracken is a very well written alternate history sci-fi novel. I enjoyed the story, character development, and dialogue. There were plenty of plot twists that I didn’t see coming and that added to the book’s mystique. Exciting as it was thought-provoking, the book had humor and romance where the author weaved ‘progressivism, music, movies, and literature into a struggle spanning the globe. Vivid characters propel the action back up through an alternative history toward an uncertain destination.’ It’s been a while since I enjoyed a book this much and couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

There’s something magical about reading fantasy fiction. It speaks to the very thread of my imagination, jolting it to life and transporting it on an exhilarating journey. This book did exactly that. Fans of the Sci-Fi genre will not be disappointed. I’ll be looking forward to reading more from this author in the future. Highly recommended and a well-deserved five stars from me.

Format: Kindle Edition [I highly recommend this format in particular of how the author has hyperlinked to many songs, various books, and articles throughout the book. It is much easier to click it than search it from a book.]

Fly Twice Backward: Fresh Starts in Times of Troubles by David McCracken is a multi decade labor of love. It's about a family given the chance to go back in time, when they are each respectively aged 12 after an accident. The lead character is trying to use his knowledge of the future to gather a fortune and mold it in the way he sees as most beneficial to society.

This book combines such intricate parts of history with flavors of ancient aliens with philosophy, and theology. Can our lead heroes overcome the butterfly effect? It isn't as easy as it seems, and at times I was discouraged thinking the truly worst would happen.

I cannot recommend this book enough. David McCracken was able to play with a time traveling concept in a unique way that made this book just about impossible to put down, just having to know how it is all going to end. I think sci-fi and history buffs would surely enjoy this book of "what ifs." I know I did!!

For the author, if it sparks your interest I reside in Herndon, and also attended Northern Virginia Community College, so my heart leapt with excitement when you started mentioning local things!!
