Publicado por primera vez en 1915, Cathay contenía catorce traducciones del chino y una traducción del poema anglosajón “The Seafarer”. Fenollosa habría escrito en primer lugar una transcripción fonética (utilizando la pronunciación japonesa del chino, razón por la cual muchos de los nombres de los poetas fueron resultado de transliteraciones, como Rihaku en vez de Li Bai). Posteriormente habría realizado una traducción al inglés, carácter por carácter, y finalmente una traducción o al menos un intento de aproximación a cada verso como un todo. La publicación original, hacia 1915, incluía además los aportes y desciframientos de los profesores Mori y Ariaga. Esta nueva traducción se basa en la edición centenaria de Cathay (New Directions, 2015), y reproduce la publicación original de 1915 en un solo volumen, más los poemas “Sennin Poem” by Kakahaku, “A Ballad of the Mulberry Road”, “Old Idea of Choan” by Rosoriu y “To-EmMeis: The Unmoving Cloud”, de Lustra (1916), junto con las transcripciones de Zhaoming Qian (transcripciones más completas y actuales, basadas en un cuidadoso examen de los cuadernos originales de Fenollosa archivados en la Biblioteca Beinecke de la Universidad de Yale).

Juan Arabia (Buenos Aires, 1983) is a poet, translator, and literary critic. In addition to publishing five books of poetry, he has written extensively on John Fante and the Beat Generation. He has translated Arthur Rimbaud, Ezra Pound, and a book-length anthology of the Beat poets. His books of poetry have been published throughout Latin America, Europe, and China: El Enemigo de los Thirties (2015), L´Océan Avare (2018), Desalojo de la naturaleza (2018), and Hacia Carcassonne (2020), among others. He is a graduate from the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires, and the founder and director of Buenos Aires Poetry.
