Don't Hold Back: Leaving Behind the American Gospel to Follow Jesus Fully Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 202 ratings

The New York Times bestselling author of Radical challenges Christians to break free from an American gospel that prostitutes Jesus for comfort, power, prosperity, and politics—and fully pursue the true gospel that exalts Jesus above all.

Pastor David Platt believes we’ve gotten really good at following a really bad gospel—one that worships American ideas over biblical truth. It’s time for disillusioned, discouraged, and divided Christians, and the next generation, to follow Jesus into a different future.

But we have to make a choice: an American gospel or the biblical gospel. Worldly division or otherworldly unity. Compromise with the idols of our country or commitment to God’s call in our lives. In
Don’t Hold Back, Platt encourages followers of Jesus to take necessary risks and find unimaginable reward as we:

• Work for—not against—each other, especially when we disagree
• Turn the tide on centuries of racial division in the church
• Trust all of God’s Word with conviction while loving everyone around us with compassion
• Do justice with kindness, and experience the good life according to God
• Play our part in spreading the gospel to all the nations of the world

We can experience the full wonder of Jesus and transcendent beauty of his church here and now. But in order to do so, some things need to be different. Starting not in “those people,” but in each one of us. With the gospel in our hearts and God as our prize, let’s press on and don’t hold back.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“David’s prophetic voice always challenges me, making me rethink assumptions and overturning my status quo. It’s hard to feel settled with a David Platt book sitting around. David is one of our generation’s most important voices.”—J. D. Greear, pastor of the Summit Church

“David Platt never holds back. This book casts a vision of the sort of gospel that cannot be manipulated, marketed, or mobilized but, rather, can shake away all the nonsense and nihilism, leaving us with Jesus. Don’t hold back; read this book.”
—Russell Moore, editor in chief of Christianity Today

Platt writes just as his title suggests: boldly and unreservedly. He puts his finger on the pulse of many issues the American church is facing today because of a false Gospel we have been believing, and he offers practical ways in which we can redirect our focus to Christ and his glorious Gospel. Platt’s understanding of the Gospel and its wholistic ramifications for our daily living leaves readers emboldened to be more Christ-like and to go against the grain of cultural Christianity in America. I want to live the kind of life Platt envisions.

I truly appreciate Platt’s heart in this book. He compellingly challenges us to consider the assumptions we hold about the gospel. As he works through each chapter, Platt helps us envision a gospel that isn’t relegated to one part of the world; he calls us back to the global mission God has called us to. The goal is the glory of God in the nations, not our own comfort or tribe. This book made me pause to consider my own heart on the matter. One hesitation I have with the book involved some of his comments on justice; I wasn’t clear on what Platt was exhorting the reader to do. Beyond that, I highly recommend this book.

I appreciate David’s vulnerability and conviction. May God help us to give our allegiance to the gospel of Jesus Christ and his kingdom. May Jesus be our king and his kingdom our country.

David Platt’s ideas within the book are worthy of being acknowledged and taken deeply into consideration. I love the idea of not holding back anything within my life from God and serving Him whole-heartedly. Being reminded that I’m not crazy for having close friendships with other brothers and sisters in Christ who do not believe exactly like me on second or third bucket issues is so refreshing. Personally, I did not enjoy chapter two, which is about race, as much as the other chapters because it seemed like I had to continually apologize for being white at the beginning of the chapter. However, towards the end, I greatly benefitted from reading Platt’s church members sharing their experiences because it makes me so much more aware of how I need to step out of my introvert shell and intentionally seek to interact with those who I see for the first time in my church. His chapters on loving well, seeking justice, and becoming gospel-consumed were excellent listens as I listened to him narrate on audiobook. All in all, be vulnerable and don’t hold back in life.

“Don’t Hold Back” is a thought-provoking and challenging read. It forced me to think about how I am living life as a Christian and how I can better steward the gifts God has given me. In this book, David Platt challenges us to work on reaching people who have never heard the gospel, embrace diversity in the church now, work toward justice for the groups Jesus calls us to help (orphans, widows, etc.), and so much more. It challenged me in my faith, and has sparked a desire in me to be better going forward in ways I didn’t even think of myself. I highly recommend it.

By now I know that David Platt's books will be hard-hitting. Sometimes makes me say "ouch" but then just thank you. The first David Platt book I read was "Radical," and I was hooked. Who writes like this? Filled with truth that's needed today more than ever. Thank you, David Platt.

David read my mind! The past couple of years I have had many of these same thoughts and concerns. Many in the Christian community do not focus on the gospel but politics, and issues like abortion. Those things and others like them have become idols and replaced the true gospel of Jesus Christ. Folks who do not vote a certain way are cast aside. In many cases, there are those in the Christian community who only pick and choose which sin they are concerned about but completely ignore other sins and scripture. Thank you Pastor Platt for sharing your thoughts

I always enjoy books by David Platt; he has a conversational writing style and, more often than not, really packs a theological punch--especially given that the books are on the shorter side (~200-ish pages)!

This one is as convicting as I expected. I do wish that Platt had fleshed out some ideas/statements more; they felt a bit one-sided and unequitable. Fair statements? Absolutely. But neither of the big 2 American political parties is perfect, and I was frustrated by a number of statements against one without also looking at the flaws of the other. He wasn't lacking for space or a word count (from this reader's perspective, anyway) and definitely could have kept the thought process going for a stronger argument or to hopefully pave the way for more dialogue (which was, after all, at least one of the end goals).

I also had expected more resources to be provided based on a couple statements he made within the book; not sure if the list of possible activities at the end of the book was supposed to be "it" or if that part wasn't included with the NetGalley eARC. The included list was helpful, for sure, but different than expected.

Still, a worthwhile read that certainly prompted me to take a hard look at my own life and how I might be (okay, am, heh) holding back.

I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

I am so discouraged by the disunity in the world today, especially amongst the church. Platt tackles some of the falsehood behind this disunity and encourages the church and the reader to live a life in pursuit of Jesus. The challenges are presented well by Platt, but more importantly they’re rooted in scripture.
