The potato hack was modeled after an 1849 diet plan for people that were becoming fat and “dyspeptic” from living too luxuriously. This potato diet simply called for one to eat nothing but potatoes for a few days at a time, promising that fat men become as “lean as they ought to be.” One hundred and sixty-seven years later, we are fatter and sicker than ever, but the potato diet still works. Potatoes contains natural drug-like agents that affect inflammation, hunger, insulin, sleep, dreams, mood, and body weight. The potato is the best diet pill ever invented. The potato hack is a short-term intervention (3-5 days) where one eats nothing but potatoes. This short mono-food experiment will strengthen your immune system and provide you with all of the nutrition you need to remain energetic, sleep great, and, as a side-effect, lose weight. The potato hack will help you develop a new relationship with food, hunger, taste, and yourself. The potato hack is not just for the overweight. As noted in 1849, anyone with digestive complaints who follows an all-potato diet for a few days at a time will find their digestion improves greatly. Modern science shows that simple diets high in fiber create an intestinal microbiome that is highly diverse and stable. This diversity and stability is lacking in most people and leads to digestive complaints like Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and Small intestinal bacterial overgrowths (SIBO). The "modern dyspeptic gut" affects millions of people and costs billions of dollars annually. The answer might be as simple as 3-5 days of potatoes. You don't need this book to do the potato hack. Just eat potatoes until full every day for 3-5 days. It really is that simple! This book explains the science behind the potato hack, some variations on the basic hack, recipes, and what to do if it does not work as advertised. Also found in The Potato Hack is a comprehensive review of resistant starch, gut health, potato history, and a growing guide for those that want to grow their own. Most of the photography throughout the book was done by award-winning photographer, Ann Overhulse. The artfully photographed potatoes found on the cover and on 30 pages within are well worth the full price of the book. Guaranteed that after reading The Potato Hack, you will never look at potatoes the same.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The general perception is that potatoes are meant to make you fat. That's why there are chances that people might not accept or believe on the concept of this book, because it is difficult for people to digest the idea that one could lose weight just by eating potatoes. However, for readers who like to experiment unconventional genres, this book is a must read!Tim Steele has done thorough research in investigating the advantages of potatoes on human health. Therefore, the book will be a great learning experience for people who really want to shed those excess pounds and get in shape just in a couple of days."

It was over three years ago that Tim came to my blog to pitch me on posting about what he'd found out about diet hacking with potatoes. Turned into dozens of posts and thousands of comments from hackers giving their test results, lots of various preparations, simple recipes, etc.I received a review copy of the first draft and even that was fabulous before Tim went and squeezed in another 100 pages. This is an easy tool almost anyone can use, and use anytime, and from any single meal, to days, to weeks, depending on need. This book leaves no question unanswered. The easiest and surest lifetime weight maintenance hack you'll ever have, the last one you'll ever need.

I bought and read the book and then began my first 3-day hack on Wednesday, March 28th. While a bit dull only eating potatoes, it was still pretty easy and I focused on things other than food for a change. I was 5 pounds lighter when I weighed myself Saturday morning. On Saturday, we went out to eat and over indulged on both food and drink, which made me nervous Sunday morning when I got on the scale. But to my surprise, I had lost another half pound. I started another hack Tuesday, April 3rd. I had regained some weight from the prior 3 days off, but lost all of that the first day back on the hack. This morning, I have now lost a total of 6.5 pounds and I also measured myself and find that I have lost an inch from all of my measurements.

This is ridiculously easy for me and, as a woman who has not been able to lose any weight since going through menopause, I didn't think it was possible for me anymore as nothing else I tried had worked. I intend to do a hack each week until I reach my goal of 35 pounds (28.5 left to go). Then, I will keep an eye on my weight and simply do a hack whenever it starts to creep up again.

4/16/18 - Update - I have lost 10 lbs in 16 days and am beginning my 4th hack today. I regained 1.6 lbs over the weekend, but that doesn't concern me at all. I have noticed that there is always a small gain after being off the hack for 3-4 days, but I have been losing that after just one day back on the hack and then I go on to lose some more. It's amazing to me how easy it's been. I don't feel deprived and I am serious when I say that I am not sick of potatoes. I haven't even done all the variations that many other people do. I've kept it very simple: boil what I need for the hack, keep it refrigerated and microwave whatever I need for each meal, adding a little salt and pepper. One thing I tried for a bit of different flavor was to sprinkle malt vinegar on the potatoes (because I've always loved fish & chips with malt vinegar) and it's really good.

It's fun going through my closet and finding clothes that were too tight before now fitting. Also, I have never felt better. I feel great and in a good mood. I feel very calm about food in general and for the first time in a long time, I feel in control of the weight situation. I have 25 more pounds left to lose and I know that I will do it.

5/1/18 - Update - I've lost 14 lbs. in 4 weeks doing a hack each week and enjoying regular food Friday thru Sunday. It's so easy for me that I like hacking through the week days. Last week, I only hacked for 3 days and ate regular foods for 4, but only gained 1.4 lbs. over the 4 days. I lost it plus a little bit more after the first day of my potato hack. By tomorrow morning, I will have lost a total of 15 or more.

It continues to be easy for me and I wanted to point out something else that is fantastic about potato hacking. Tim Steele tells you in his book how anti-inflammatory potatoes are for your body. I was hopeful but skeptical that it would help me with the arthritis I have in my fingers. I have had to take Aleve once or twice a day every day to subdue the pain. I worried about the damage this could be doing to my liver and tried taking Rose Hips instead. The Rose Hips worked but I had to take 2 capsules 2-3 times a day to keep the pain at bay and that got a little pricey having to buy Rose Hips so frequently. 2 weeks ago, I ran out of Rose Hips. I planned to buy more but was busy and didn't get around to it. Then after a week had gone by, I realized that the pain in my fingers was simply gone. And I mean gone 24/7! It feels like a miracle to me--it truly does. And for this reason alone, I would do the potato hack for the rest of my life even if I never lost a pound from it. But, I am steadily losing weight as well as pain free.

Later this month, I am scheduled for my annual blood work & physical check up. I will let you know if things have improved from last year's.

Great Book with great information. The poor potato has been exploited and given a bum rap because of what WE do to it. I originally got the book because it talked about the potato being good for inflammation, which I have a problem with. I have been having violetn attacks which we are labeling as idopathic pancreatitis, but not EPI, which is still pancreas related but exocrine (where you cannot absorb fat) so this book has really helped me in that area. As a plus, I did loose weight when I did it straight for only 3 days. What I really noticed was I was able to maintain my weight loss after one of my attacks. Usually I would go back to my old eating habits and the weight would return and the attacks. I have started to use potatoes as 50 to 75% of my diet and added a few things back in. Yes, it gets old without all the junk we like to add, but they are still good, because I do like potatoes. The book warns of changing things too much and it will not take the weight off, if that is why you are using the info in it, but Iike the results it has provided me with my issue. I am in the chapter now where it gets very technical about the nutrients and all the other good things in potatoes that are good for us but are ignored. Some of it above my head and vocabulary, but it is important to know this information. I have had a lot of energy, sleep better, just finding all kinds of benefits. I am sold on it. I would suggest if you do have health issues like diabetes, as the book suggests, that you take it slow and be careful or talk to your doctor. Potatoes, again, have been given a bum rap and that is OUR fault.

Update: I am hoping this info will be helpful to people with celiac/lectin issues, who stay away from potatoes. Reading parts of the book I missed. People who are celiac or have trouble with lectins CAN eat potoates. Just remove the skin. What people do not understand is that wheat IS loaded with lectins. I kept having serious attacks even after stopping wheat. LECTINS were the monsters that kept putting me in the hospital. I have potatoes everyday, even if not doing a hack. You just have to remove the skin where the great majority of the lectins are lurking.

I have discovered, painfully, the things I cannot have, 14 cherries put me in the hospital, because the lectins are in the peelings and seeds. Who peels cherries? Also, some lectins can be carefully eaten in a very small amount. I have been able to get away with a small romaine lettuce salad, a big one put me in the hospital though. Often having other things with it to help dilute/camoflauge the lectins helps you, but know it has to be small amounts.

My husband can eat lectins all day long. Cherry tomatoes are mostly skin and seeds, another hospital trip for me. Just be careful, put again, I steam my potatoes, refrigerate, and remove peelings before eating. No problems, and trust me, after 25+ excruciating trips to the hospital, I would know and am careful.
Reading another book on lectins and it says the resistent starch is higher if you roast them instead of steam them. I am trying to find in the book where Tim addresses that. If you remember or know, please let me know what page it is on. I thought it was better to steam them. I know it is for keeping the nutrients.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works brilliantly for me
Reviewed in Germany on August 3, 2018
Since I started my weightloss journey two years ago I hit a plateau a few months ago.
I knew from freetheanimal about the potatoe hack and always thought it to be just another fad.
But when I couldnt get over the plateau and was kind of getting desperate I gave this a go.
And for what it did for me was almost wondrous, it broke my plateau and I seriously lost 2kg at my first attempt, doing the hack for just three days.
From this loss an honest kilo was gone for good after the following refeed days and it still is - two months after.
As every serious dieter knows most rapid weightloss is water and is regained when the body sugar depots fill up again but nevertheless this amount is amazing.
But to stay honest, I also find it difficult. On the third day I start to dream about food and prefer to leave the table when the family has a real meal. In addition I need to almost constantly have potatoes with me as on my second potatoe week it happened I got hypoglycaemic when I didnt have enough of them to really stuff myself at work.
So, its brilliant for a few days, I get some serious weightloss accomplished which is well worth the suffering. But I could never do it like the magician Penn who did this for months.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime simplicity to slim down
Reviewed in Australia on June 16, 2017
I've done this potato fast before when it was only discussed online in forums. This book offers clearer guidelines, more variations, explanations and the science behind it all (which made me squeak with geeky glee). The way it's set out is logical and interesting and you can zoom past the science bits of it bores you to tears without missing out on pertinent information.
I lost 20kg on it before and then abandoned it as "unsustainable" but the beauty of this book it to show you a way of introducing the hack into your lifestyle and normal life forever.
So 4 days in and 4 kilograms down - I'm back on it but in a lifetime manner. And unlike other diets - my tummy is full every day.

What a totally fab book this is. It goes into so much detail of the nutrition of potatoes and what good they can do your health, after years of trying, unsuccessfully, to follow the currently popular low carb diet plans, I've tried this and all I can say is I wish I'd done this years ago and not kept trying to follow what the majority of "experts" recommend as a healthy diet. I'm now more alert, no more cloudy thinking, my memory has improved, I sleep better, I'm consistently losing weight, my blood sugar readings are now in the normal zone-even on the low end of it, I have energy, my inflammation has gone way down and my aches and pains are diminishing.
Try this, if it suits your body as it does mine you won't regret it. I can't believe how quickly this has had an effect on me and only wish I'd found it twenty years ago!
