4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 11 ratings

Olivia and Edward Lereux live a quiet life with their chocolate Border collie, Axel in a picturesque cottage flanked by Maine’s blustery cliffs, far from town and people. Outwardly, their lives appear normal, but they’re not ordinary people. The Lereux family is cursed with something that has claimed their ancestors many years.

When Ravine Lereux receives a distressing letter from her Uncle Edward, she must return to a place she swore never to return, a place that’s haunted by something, an abnormal presence she feared as a child. Now she must face it again. As she races to the aid of her aunt and uncle, she makes an unsettling discovery about herself and her family.

Ravine gets a note from her Uncle Edward causing her to return to her cursed family home, a home that everyone disappears from. This was an interesting but choppy short story leaving me wanting more information, more details. It felt like a short prequel to a very good novel.I read this short story because it takes place in Maine near Acadia National Park. I will read almost anything set in Maine.

I would stand in line to read anything written by E. Denise Billups. She has the rare ability to blend beautiful writing, compelling, complex characters, and an engaging storyline. In the short story Ravine Lereux, Billups brings these elements together to elicit every emotion with some of the most powerful being fear and anticipation. Ravine Lereax is a story about a family and a curse seen through the eyes of two women, one young, beautiful and about to come to an awakening and one old, fading but about to find acceptance in transformation.

The author’s pacing is on point as usual and an alternating third-person limited POV gives you a unique perspective of what’s in store for young Ravine and her aunt Olivia. Make no mistake this one is a psychological horror story on the line of a Stephen King or Alfred Hitchcock, coupled with the flair and elegance only Billups can deliver. It ended way too fast and the prose was so lyrical, I couldn’t resist reading it twice. I would be remiss in not including a passage here. Billups’ work is truly literary and at the same time cinematic in its rendering. Behold…

“Swirling gauzy tendrils swallow the jeep, smothering views ghostly before freeing the car to finer mist. The incline flattens and then dips, revealing a dark mass drifting beyond a full moon over Frenchman Bay. The white cottage arises a surreal three-dimensional painting. Amber and tilleul heads tremble with the breeze, shaking foliage across the shadowy home. Windows shuttered laurel green, appear open-eyed, guarding the yard. The sun-bleached falcate timbered porch grins eerie in headlights.”

I have loved everything I’ve read by E. Denise Billups, so when I had the opportunity to read Ravine Lereux, I jumped at the chance. And boy, am I glad I did! What an engaging, page-turning story. I read the ebook while listening to the audiobook which gave me this really cool, almost cinematic experience.

The writing is just wonderful. It took me about 50 minutes to get through this book, and it’s amazing how quickly I grew fond of the main characters, and felt all the emotions meant for me to feel. It’s a complex plot in a small amount of words, and not once did I feel like the story fell short.

Ah, this is such a good story! I liked the air of mystery surrounding the plot. I enjoyed the pacing, which kept me compelled to continue reading. Honestly, I read this twice over two days because I was just enthralled with the story.

Beautiful writing, wonderful story. I had no trouble deciding to give this 5 well-deserved stars. Check it out!!

I loved this story and thought it was beautifully written. I had a suspicion about what was happening, but greatly enjoyed the telling. Some prose I found so lyrical, I had to re-read merely for the beautiful satisfaction. I'm looking forward to reading more from E. Denise Billings.

I previously read the book Tainted Harvest by E. Denise Billups and it was so good that I could not turn down an opportunity to read this supernatural short story. I was not disappointed.

Ravine Lereux has always felt she was different and her family was cursed. She just wasn’t sure by what exactly. She knew one day she would be the only one remaining in the Lereux family and it is then that she would learn their history. This short story was action packed and kept me turning page. It was a great quick read!

Ravine Lereux is the second short work I've read by author E. Denise Billups and thoroughly enjoyed. I like to read the short fiction genre, but it can be tricky to find stories that are done well. Good short fiction requires that a literary punch be put into a limited amount of words and this author has mastered the art. The plot and pacing are perfect from curious beginning to startling end, and the shifting POV is a clever way to make readers understand the full impact of the family curse. Beautifully written, haunting, and highly recommended for fans of paranormal dark fiction. Also recommended for those who enjoy a great short read!

Author E. Denise Billups has outdone herself in this short paranormal story. How does she pack so much intrigue and suspense into her stories?

I love everything about Ravine Lereux. The pacing is amazing. I was drawn page by page toward the finish, where the mystery of the family curse is revealed. The characters are divinely real, from the Bah Hahba waitress to Ravine herself, I felt like I was right there with them.

I highly recommend Ravine Lereux by E. Denise Billups to lovers of paranormal, mystery, suspense, thrillers, and great short-stories. Pick up a copy today, you won’t be disappointed!
