The Openings Revealed in Makkah (al-Futuhat al-Makkiyah), Books 1 & 2 Hardcover – March 29, 2019

The Futuhat Project is the translation project by Dr. Eric Winkel of the entirety of al-Futuhat al-Makkiyah, The Openings Revealed in Makkah by Muhyiddin Ibn al-Arabi. This volume contains Books 1 & 2 of The Openings Revealed in Makkah and the project is anticipated to be completed in 2022 in nineteen volumes. The Greatest Teacher, al-Shaykh al-Akbar, Ibn al-Arabi dictated to his close friends this work of over 10,000 manuscript pages depicting the extraordinary vision of the Youth he encountered while circling the Kabah in Makkah. Despite its clear provenance as a completely accurate work, from the hand and mind of its transcriber, and its reputation through the centuries as the most significant and profound reflection of Islamic thought, the Futuhat al-Makkiyah has never been translated from the original classical Arabic in its entirety. From 2012, Dr. Winkel has been working exclusively on translating this work in order to produce the first complete translation into English of the Futuhat al-Makkiyah.

Review

At this juncture of human evolution, we are in desperate need of clear heart-guidance. We need knowledge that will help to guide us out of the dream labyrinth in which we are wandering - a labyrinth of materialism, of clinging to separate identities and nationalities, addicted to conflict, sickened by the lack of deep meaning in our life and the terror of being adrift in an uncaring universe. The only guidance that can lead us out of this haunted condition is the knowledge of the human heart which comes through the great hearts of humanity. These Masters of the heart rest in deep God-consciousness. Their light shines beyond the borders of separate religions and nations and transcends the changes of time. This is the guidance we need to urgently attend to for the survival of life on Earth and for peace and mutual understanding in our human family. It is the light that will awaken our own heart, where Truth dwells. The subtle science of human nature and Divine Reality presented by the Master Ibn al-Arabi is this rare and precious knowledge, far beyond what empirical science can provide but also complementing it and grounding it in a spiritual universe. May we drink from the wells of the Master of the heart, Ibn al-Arabi , and be spiritually revived. --Fariha Fatima Friedrich, Shaykh of the Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order

This translation will undoubtedly be looked at as a great historical achievement by future generations, long after we are all gone. Dr. Eric Winkel s task of translating the entirety of the Futuhat is a remarkable and commendable feat, and is nothing short of being monumental. I have enjoyed reading Dr. Winkel s fine translation as much as I have reading the original Arabic text, and I have no doubt that a work such as this conveys the flavor and sense of the grand vision of Ibn Arabi, which was given to him as a gift from God. That Dr. Winkel has been able to do so in a translation that is not encumbered by extensive footnotes speaks to the merits and accessibility of the translation itself. This volume accounts for the second installment of Dr. Winkle s translation, and it is hoped that he will continue to have the tawfiq to complete the translations of the other 35 books of the Futuhat. Amin! --Hany Talaat Ahmed Ibrahim, University of Calgary

I believe this translation to be one of the most relevant intellectual and spiritual events happening in our time. I am sure that this volume, which is mainly concerned with the view of cosmology and creation of Ibn Arabi, will be a source of inspiration and fundamental research in our time for scientists, spiritual seekers, artists and people of all kinds, whether they consider themselves Muslims or not, religious or not, intellectual or not, since the teaching of Ibn Arab, offered as the fruit of direct tasting, beyond their Islamic inspiration and foundation, remain a universal expression of the human experience of essential Reality. Through Winkel s linguistic skills, English appears as the very rich and creative language it is, suitable for rendering, as far as it is possible to do so in the case of such a genuinely Arabic thought, which so deeply and intensively explores all the nuances and interconnections of the lexical roots in the language of the Quran and the intricacies and delicacies of the al-Futuhat. This highly lucid version demonstrates a rigorous fidelity to the original on every page, coherent from beginning to end and fully readable, and I trust that it will provide a solid basis for the many future studies and developments that this remarkable work surely demands. Of particular use are the much needed and knowledgeable notes which Winkel provides on many of the most difficult dimensions of the text, proving a solid scientific training in different domains as well as a penetrating intuition in affinity with the nature of this measure- less writing. However, this is not the place to comment on the content of these 40 dense chapters, their connection to Quranic suras or similar matters. All I would like to do here in conclusion, since everything is shifting, is to encourage the reader to begin their voyage of discovery through this incomparable book, with the attentiveness, spiritual courtesy and receptivity which it requires and which Ibn Arabi recommends to us, in the company of the invaluable help provided by a most inspiring translation. --Pablo Beneito, Universidad de Murcia

About the Author

Dr. Eric Winkel has studied Ibn al-Arabi and the Futuhat al-Makkiyah for twenty-five years. At Haverford College (BA), then the University of Pennsylvania (MA), then the University of South Carolina (PhD), he undertook eclectic studies, mostly religion at first, focusing on spiritual matters, then later including political science, and numerous languages to enable study of religious and spiritual texts (Sanskrit, Greek, Coptic, Tamil, Arabic, others, besides French and German). An Ibn al-Arabi scholar, Dr. Winkel taught at the International Islamic University, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and was Senior Fulbright Scholar in Islamabad, Pakistan. He was also Dean of Students at the International Institute of Chinese Medicine in Santa Fe, New Mexico. While Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies in Malaysia, Dr. Winkel explored how the concepts of the new sciences opened obscure and difficult passages of the Futuhat al-Makkiyah. He explored connections between the vision of Ibn al-Arabi and mathematics and physics developed after the 19th century. The mystical, strange world Ibn al-Arabi describes may be read as also the strange realm of quantum physics and higher-dimensional, and fractal dimensional, topographies. Since 2012, Dr. Winkel has been translating the Futuhat al-Makkiyah, intended to be the first complete, as well as most accurate and contemporary, translation into English of this masterwork. Author of books and monographs on Ibn al-Arabi, Islamic law, and the new sciences, and articles examining the vision of Ibn al-Arabi in light of contemporary mathematical physics, Dr. Eric Winkel is uniquely poised to connect these worlds. He continues to work on his translation project of the Futuhat and presently makes his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

I got introduced to the Greatest Sheikh about 30 years ago. I have read most of what is available in English by or about Ibn Arabi. I even bought the Arabic Futuhat, but don't understand much of it. As such, I always dreamed to have the Futuhat translated in English. I am overjoyed to see that my dream is coming true. Very much enjoying Books 1 & 2. Translation quality is more than what I expected. Can't wait to see the rest being published. May Allah bless the effort of all those who are involved in this project.

I am very grateful to Dr. Eric Winkel for this wonderful translation of Ibn Arabi's Work. It truly is a labour of love. The translation is easy to understand and a pure pleasure to read. Having written a PhD on Ibn Arabi myself, I wish this translation had been available a couple of years ago. Personally I will buy anything Dr Winkel publishes and want to publicly express my gratitude to him for his tremendous efforts in making Ibn Arabi's teachings available to non-Arabic readers.

I found the translation by Eric Winkle easy to read and relate to. This is a treasure trove of ideas that have not only influenced the Sufi world, but surprisingly many of the Renaissance and current Quantum Physics and beyond seem to have been addressed in the Futuhat. A must read to sew back the fabric of our minds torn up by the reductionist approaches of modern science.

I am reading this gem of a book; piecemeal by piecemeal and I am in love! So much information compressed in vols 1 and 2, so no need to rush this one. Take your time to really understand what is being relayed in every sentence and page.
I'll always cherish this book and can't wait for the future release of other volumes!

These books are exquisite. They are not simply a translation...they are a lifetime of love, of adab, of study and transmission from ibn Arabi himself. The Arabic language, and many such languages, have levels of meaning which we just do not have in english. And yet, to capture the depth and richness of the original, to captivate and open up wonder, while also being accurate and excellent - It shows in every aspect of these books. It is one thing to translate. It is yet another to be a transmission. These are treasures. They are sacred texts, truly. I have seen people from many paths open up through these writings. I have seen deeper connections with nature and with the self, but the connection to Qur'an and to the heart of real Islam is the greatest gift ibn Arabi hoped to bring and to offer. And so I hope these texts will be read and experienced all around the world. This english edition of futuhat is a treasure unlike any other. It is meant for our day, it has been waiting for our day, and for those willing to use their lives to serve the release of such a thing.

“How strange! They think they are at the lowest of the low when actually they are where they should be, at the highest of the heights. I take refuge in God that I not be one of the ignorant ones!” - Ibn Arabi

In a time where the world is increasingly obsessed with greed, and the isolation of egoism, and human beings are viewed as a means to an end, Dr Winkel’s beautiful, expansive, and accessible translation of Ibn al Arabi’s The Openings Revealed in Makkah offers a radically transformative vision of humanity as being created in the image of God, so that the Divine is the only thing that truly exists.

In Ibn Arabi’s vision the way to realize participation in this Divine Life is through perfect servanthood, through gratitude and humility. This is exemplified par excellence by messengers and prophets -- Adam, Abraham, Moses and Jesus, and countless others -- sent by Allah to every spiritual nation without exception, and culminating in the beloved and gentle Prophet Muhammad, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon them all and all those close to their hearts.

Dr. Winkel’s clear translation provides an open doorway into how Ibn Arabi delineates the path to opening in God’s love and self-disclosures. God wants to know us, and commune with us, but can only do so if we have a heart that opens through God’s self-disclosure to receive grace and blessings. To allow this the human being must abandon our egocentric view of life so Allah’s presence and guiding light can enter our hearts. Spiritual practices can help polish the heart. It is important, in Ibn Arabi’s view, to note that no amount of effort by itself can bring us closer to God without God’s wanting and desiring to reveal that knowledge to his servant. By ourselves we can know nothing about God whatsoever. God will always be beyond any conception we have of him. God can give knowledge about himself to any servant he chooses and its in its essence a pure gift.

The remarkability of this book is that it increases our openness to the wonder that is present in the relationship of the divine and human. We thereby find that when we live our lives in gratitude and submission to our cherisher, the world, all of it from plants and minerals, the stars and skies, human relations and even politics and sexuality, become transfigured signs of Allah’s overwhelming grace. In Dr. Winkel’s faithful and clear translation of Ibn Arabi’s masterwork, we are gifted a vast resource to help us return to our heart’s deepest desire, which is to live in love and gratitude to our cherisher who is the goal and essence of all beings. Reading this book has increased my gratitude and awareness and I would recommend this book to all spiritual seekers, and particularly to the seeker on the path of sufism.
