The Stranger by Linda Maran is a terrific read with a great twist. After Kristen Esh's mother dies in an accident, seventeen-year-old Kristen, on direction of her mother's arrangements, has to leave her home on the Jersey Shore and go live with her mother's Amish family. A family that her mother left years ago, and whom Kristen didn't know existed until now. The strict rules and lifestyle of the Amish is a shock to Kristen. She tries to get a hold of her girlfriend and her boyfriend in Jersey to come and get her. It takes several attempts and when she gets her boyfriend, he tells Kristen that he is dating her girlfriend. Another shock.

Now, Kristen tries to settle into Amish life because it is only for a year. When she is eighteen and her mother's estate is settled, she can leave the Amish. Kristen lives with her Aunt Elizabeth and her husband and his son John from a previous marriage. John is courting Sadie, but he feels sorry for Kristen and tries to help her adapt to her new life. Kristen is attracted to John, and John soon wonders if he is courting the right girl.

Then a mystery starts to develop. Someone is leaving messages in Elizabeth and John's mailbox saying that the stranger needs to go back to where she came from. Kristen feels unwanted and rejected. Kristen never knew about her mother's family, and never knew the dad that left her, and now she has even more upset...her life seems to be all tangled up.

The Stranger is a heartwarming story about a girl, who must live in a strange place, with people she has never met before, but discovers that she is on a journey that will change her life forever.

I was thoroughly caught up into this story from the beginning. Seventeen year old Kristen Esh was sent to live with her aunt and uncle in an Amish community after the unexpected accident that claimed her mother and her employer’s life. Kristen was clueless she had an Amish heritage until then , along with the shock of their lifestyle in being uprooted from her beloved New Jersey shore to the Amish community in Stone Arabia, NY. John Wagler seemed to be the only one who really understood her and she could trust with her thoughts. Will Kristen discover hidden secrets that her mother kept and how will the Amish community accept her by being raised in the Englisher world? The Stranger is the debut Amish novel by Linda Maran. It is a heartfelt well written story that has elements opposite lifestyles, suspense, learning to trust in God and an under lying romance. I would like to see a sequel to this book to continue the story of this Amish community along with the life of Kristen, the Wagler family, Jacob and Katie Mast, and other secondary characters. .

The Stranger is a wonderful well-written story about a young woman's challenge to choose a new way of life and a new partner to love. The author opens a window into the simple lifestyle and meaningful values of the Amish people.

THE STRANGER is Ms. Maran's debut novel, and fans of Amish fiction will likely love it. Kristen is English and when her mother dies, she is basically sent to live with Amish relatatives that she never even knew existed! Culture shock set in, as Kristen is an ultra-modern teen from the very upscale Jersey Shore and upper state New York is about as far from that as you can get culturally.

John is Amish, and is about the only one accepting of Kristen at first. He befriends her, and helps her as she tries to unravel the mystery, and discover her ancestry. But what will Kristen choose? Will she return to her known and loved world? Or stay in the one she's been thrust into and comes to love?

A coming of age story for Kristen, mixed with a light romance and a mixing of mystery, this is a book that Amish fiction loves will flock to. The Amish setting in the story is a real life area only about an hour and a half from Ms. Maran's vacation home, so she visits the area often. You can feel her familiarity with the areas in the style of writing.

I was given a copy free. All opinions are my own.
