The Tragedy of Strangers brought Him Face-to-face with His Past

Journalist Scott Harrington sets out to write a documentary on the lives of three homeless men. He hopes to win a prestigious award and his father's respect. In the process, he uncovers stories of heartbreak, trauma, and rejection, causing him to revisit his own tragic past and the guilty secret that he holds.

Claire Bassett has been searching for her husband who went missing a year ago. The attentions of another man cause her to question if she should continue to search or move on with her life. As Scott and Claire's stories overlap, will there be restoration or rejection?

This book reminds us that each life is precious and valuable to God and how one life impacts another. Throughly enjoyed this story and other books by Kathleen Neeley!

From the prologue's poignant quote of Matthew 25:37-40, "'Lord, when did we see you hungry?" to the last sentence in the epilogue, the reader is taken on a journey to the land of the homeless. Here we are introduced to sights and sounds of a culture deeply hidden in the day, coming out at night like zombies to roam a bleak landscape. No one seems to care, because they are invisible, until Scott Harrington, in an act part selfish, part humanitarian, draws back the curtains. We witness Scott's struggle between using these human beings to further his ambition as a writer or allowing himself to feel their pain and take on their cause. Stella, the feisty, hard-working owner of a cafe proves the perfect foil to Neeley's Scott. The twists are just enough that you don't see them coming. The ending is satisfying and the supporting characters are well-rounded. A beautiful book by Kathleen Neely, that delivers a punch to the heart.

Kathleen has another winner in this book! The two main characters are Scott Harrington and Claire Bassett. Though they don’t know one another their lives are about to be intertwined in a very strange and beautiful way. Taking place in a Pennsylvania on the western part, I’m very familiar with most of the locations mentioned. The author has a way of making you feel every emotion that comes into the life of her characters. I felt as though I were able to view the scenes like a fly on the wall. She embraces homelessness and the helplessness and determination that they go through. Scott is going to become homeless to get their stories and win a Pulitzer, in the end, he realizes that the story is very small considering what he really does. I definitely recommend this book and give another 5 star rating. I was given an advanced copy to read and review.

I enjoyed this book very much. The 4 stars instead of 5 are because the storyline and characters are so obvious. I knew who they were and expected what they would do very early in the book but I kept reading because the author made the story interesting in spite of the obvious conclusion.
The journalist wants a story he can sell about people living on the street. He feels that he needs three background stories so he wonders the streets looking for someone who will talk to him. He finds an old man who wants to talk a lot, a younger man who seems to be the old man's protector but doesn't want to talk at all except to growl when asking a question and a teenage boy who is afraid of the streets and is willing to do anything to get away. There is also a woman who is searching for the husband who abandoned her and her child a year ago.
You will love the old man and probably learn some things about people who live on the streets. I hope other people will enjoy this book as much as I did. I enjoyed this book very much. What a refreshing story Ms. Neely has crafted. I did not know how she was going to intersect Scott and Claire's stories, but she did it masterfully. As someone who supports Missions and has seen the need meal sites provide, I was thrilled how they were shown to be lights in the community. Scott starts out doing a story on homelessness, but has his life transformed by the people he meets. Little does Scott know that he will make a huge change in Claire's life, a woman he doesn't know exists. A wonderful story of mending hearts and how imperfect people can be loved and forgiven.
