As the Great War clamors into Finland, Sergeant Matti Ranta of the Finnish Conscripted Corps and his new girlfriend Anna Ojala struggle to keep their lives intact. Matti is sent to the front to lay siege on Leningrad in alliance with a terrible enemy. Torn between his desire to regain his homeland and an aching suspicion that what they are doing isn't right, Matti is forced to make an unimaginable choice to save an orphan who will surely die without his intervention.

Set in 1940's Finland and Leningrad, this story weaves two cultures together through the lives of three people who never should have met, but who would be inexplicably drawn together through a great miracle of faith in a time when miracles seem impossible.

And in the end, love survives.

Top reviews from the United States

This story is long, but never boring, which I love. The characters and plot are well-developed and believable. I enjoyed looking up the locations on a present day map. I kept wondering how the characters’ lives were going to intersect. The only criticism I have about the book is not for the writing but for the editing. I think I’m one of the first readers, so maybe the mistakes will be fixed by the time you read it. The few mistakes which should have been caught by the editor are an annoying distraction from the story. One example is when a character comes into the room with “the baby on her hip” a few sentences later another character in the room asks where the baby is, and the first character goes to wake the baby in another room. I also found the lack of spaces between some sentences strange. They may have been intentional, but it interrupted the flow of reading for me.

To be honest, I’m an American and even when it comes to what life would have looked like in different times I have never really thought of what life for others in another country, especially the ones of this book, would be like. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the perspective shift. I can’t wait for a sequel.

I was quickly drawn into the characters in this novel and the history I learned while reading it! I hope to read more from these characters and this author!
