The God Prince (Earthborn Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 3 ratings

Ranjit Blake, captain of the guard, protects his people by killing whoever threatens them. Even if the danger is Prince Sheruke, a half-human earth elemental. Sheruke can’t be harmed when he becomes a landslide or a lava flow, but Ranj tricks him into taking his human form. And at point-blank range, Ranj shoots him in the head.

Ranj immediately wishes he’d saved the bullet for himself, because Sheruke has a secret—he’s invulnerable in either form. That leaves Ranj no choice but to surrender and offer to serve Sheruke. In any capacity he desires.

Sheruke may have stone eyes and disfiguring scars, but his power and charisma make up for those—and there’s never been a human he couldn’t tame. Not even Ranj. But as the reckless gunslinger gives in to temptation, Sheruke wants even more of him. And the danger level is off the charts. Because if Ranj ever discovers Sheruke’s other secret, the one which could destroy even a Prince, Ranj will have to choose between the safety of his people and the life of the Prince who has fallen for him.

3.5 stars, actually.

So the first in the series featured a Japanese heroine and introduced us to the sff/fantasy mashup world where a cruise ship from the real world somehow found its way to a fantasy world with a mad, volcanic queen buried in a valley about a generation ago (which means alot of the characters retain their real world identities/cultures/languages).

Somehow a human found the mad queen, and "princes" resulted, a series of very powerful men who can change into mud/landslides/rock walls, etc.

In the first book, this was very unique and cool. In this second book, Sheruke the Prince is just....a bit ...I hate to say this...boring.

And the human love interest Ranj seems inconsistently active and brash at the start, and then amazingly passive and talky for the rest of the book. This is high steam level, and those parts were fine, but the sometimes random-seeming decisions by Ranj and his sister (leaving the settlement, coming back to the settlement, escaping, not escaping, etc) never really impacted their story or formed characters that I could dig my teeth into.

So world is still interesting, but the developments in this book glossed over some of what made the world scintillating and dangerous. Sheruke decides to kill his brothers at some point, and we get one of those fights on page, but alot of what would be character developing decisions about who to kill, what kind of Prince he was, yadda yadda yadda happens off screen. So it felt summarized.

I like all those juicy character-making bits. So not as much to my taste as the first book.

This book was REALLY COOL. I loved the Chara and the plot, but the world is what really did it for me- the conceit of the Earthborn Princes is expanded upon and the lore of the Queen Beneath the Earth gets deeper, in ways that really captivated me. The central mystery is well-woven, too. All in all, a good read.
