About the authors
Reese Traves writes books for kids. She loves thinking up stories and fun characters and then writing things for those characters to say in the stories. WANDER NEW YORK: FITZ IN THE CITY is her debut picture book.
She is also the co-founder of Hello Small World, a greeting card & illustration studio creating cheer-inducing greeting cards, art prints, calendars & more since 2011.
Reese loves bright colors, coffee (she’s done growing so it’s okay — she also does not know if this is a fact or myth), coding, and of course wandering in new places. She lives in Texas with Fitz and Fitz’s illustrator, Jon, who happens to be her husband.
Visit her website at www.reesetraves.com and follow Reese on Twitter @reesetraves.

I enjoyed Fitz’s joyfulness of exploration. It was nice to see him learn new things. He visits the Statue of Liberty, the public Library, the terminal, and so much more.
The literature was easy to read, and the words were chosen wisely. The work is a perfect gift for anyone who wishes to offer a fun and educational book to a child.
I particularly enjoyed Fitz’s personality and courage. The illustrations really stood out for me. The contract of the colors and the combination of the images placed together was really attractive. I recommend this book to parents who are looking to read something fun for their children. This is a very suitable and enjoyable children’s book.
I can see this series used by families to prepare their youngsters for their next family vacation.

This delightfully fun debut by author-illustrator/wife-husband duo promotes curiosity and embraces a sense of adventure. Fitz is an adorable little fox on his first trip ever with his mom. Their New York City adventure begins with a ride in a yellow taxi and takes them to landmarks throughout the city: “I want to wander everywhere— / there is so much to see, / and it all starts in Manhattan / in this yellow taxi.” Rhyming text moves the reader from place to place as Fitz explores the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, the New York Public Library, plus Grand Central Station, museums, restaurants, the zoo, and Greenwich Village. As with any trip, plans can hit a blockade, but Fitz finds a way around it. And, when he and his mom take the subway, they face a new glitch to their plans—but they find a positive in this part of their adventure too.
Each spread is beautifully illustrated with charming details readers will love to explore in subsequent readings of the story. I especially like the clever use of animals—badgers, raccoons, porcupines, bears, rabbits—to represent the creativity and multiculturalism of NYC. My favorites are the subway spread (and Fitz’s reaction to the other riders) and story time at the library. Each spread also includes several facts and history about the location or landmark, adding depth (and educational value) to Fitz’s travels. For example, “NYC is made up of five boroughs: Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island and the Bronx” in the opening spread and later, “Times Square is the center of the Theatre District, a.k.a Broadway, a.k.a. the ‘Great White Way’.”
Little foxes will enjoy reading and exploring with Fitz again and again. (And big foxes won’t mind the repeated readings.) I’m looking forward to more adventures with Fitz! Where will he travel next?
