Five trips, two cousins, one family feud, and a summer that will change their lives forever.

It's bad enough that estranged cousins Becka and KJ see each other at their grandfather's funeral, but when he leaves them a bucket list of places to visit together over the summer, so they can earn their inheritance, it seems like things are about to get much worse.

However, with each trip the cousins complete -- like riding mules into the Grand Canyon or encountering a bear and a hot tour guide at Yellowstone -- they steadily learn about and begin to trust one another. That is until the truth behind Grandpa's bucket list, and their family feud, is revealed, testing Becka and KJ far beyond their limits. Will they ultimately find a way to accept each other or will their grandpa's wish to mend his divided family end up buried alongside him inside his grasshopper green casket?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up—Although they are cousins, high school seniors KJ and Becka, who are white, have been strangers most of their lives, until they meet again at their eccentric grandfather's funeral and learn that they must fulfill his bucket list of adventures…together. The two have lived separate and very different lives as a result of a feud between their mothers, but their grandfather wanted them to be friends despite the rift, so he forces them to go on five exciting trips. All of the experiences were meticulously planned before his death, and the girls and their mothers will not receive their large inheritance unless they fulfill each one. As they ride mules to the bottom of Grand Canyon, hike through Yellowstone, whitewater raft in the Chattooga River, and scuba dive in Key West, the cousins reluctantly find that they have more in common than they thought. Their fondness for each other predictably grows, until they learn a shocking fact about their past that threatens to sabotage their trust. The girls' distinct personalities are revealed through alternating first-person chapters, and letters that arrive from their grandfather throughout the summer disclose why he has gone to extraordinary lengths to reunite the girls. The descriptions of their experiences are enough to tempt a traveler, but they remain a backdrop against which the plot and characters evolve. VERDICT Although there are many unanswered questions, this engaging debut packs authentic dialogue, strong personalities, and fabulous destinations into a heartwarming tale of family drama and personal growth.—MaryAnn Karre, Binghamton, NY

Hate is easy, it can be adopted from someone else’s experience and poison your thoughts. Friendship and caring, they take work and time and removal from an ever-present dialog of loathing. Grandpa knew that. His own loss and pain are the impetus behind a grand summer of discovery in the natural world. The trips become the venues of self-discovery as two young women realize they don’t have to hate each other. A dual point of view telling is easy to follow. The family dynamics are great discussion material. I highly recommend this book! This is a perfect summer read for YA or adult readers to ponder how our thoughts and opinions are formed. This was such a fun book with a really sweet (but not sappy or sentimental!) core. I loved that this was a cousins story, which set it apart from other "friends" road trip or "bucket list" stories I've read. Both K.J. and Becka were believable and each had a unique voice that gave a lot of flavor to their respective chapters. The different adventures they have together were exciting to read about, and I loved how each one changed their relationship. The change in their feelings toward one another was slow and incremental, and very believable. One step forward....two steps back., just like repairing a seriously damaged relationship in real life. There's a twist at the end that I didn't see coming at all, but once it was out there, it made everything make so much more sense. Very well handled by the author! I'd highly recommend this as fun summer read about family, friendship, forgiveness, and the healing power of a good adventure.

This book is in the young adult category but I am a senior and I loved it. This is one of those books that you would like to jump into and give a couple of the characters a slap in the face. The focus is on two estranged cousins, but the story is about two families torn apart by an indiscretion that devastated several lives. Now a test of the two cousins sends them on an adventure to find each other and their paths in life.

Delve into a summer full of bucket-list destinations with two completely different cousins who will both win your heart. Bazay does a magnificent job with the characters, pulling at heartstrings along the way. A few unexpected twists made this story not only enjoyable, but meaningful as well. Pick this up to read whether you're sitting poolside, road-tripping, hitting the beach or hiking. It's the perfect companion to whatever summer adventure you have planned.

My purchase was based on friend’s encouragement to support an Oklahoman author. I was surprised by the “colorful” language, but I have no tolerance for foul language. Reality is that most teenagers do speak in such a manner and it was an important character development tactic. I kept reading because I was intrigued by the mystery event that caused the shattered relationship between the “mom” sisters. I also enjoyed the travel adventures of the teenagers. Reconciliation and forgiveness can bring freedom, if we choose it!!

As an upper elementary language arts teacher I would recommend this book for grades 9-12+ (A little to old for my 4-6 graders to relate to) The conversations between the characters are exactly what I would hear walking through the cafeteria while the high schoolers are in there. Bazay has a keen grasp on the vernacular of an 18 year old HS senior. The author was also able to perfectly capture the different life experiences and future goals of the two, very different main characters, K.J. and Becca. I loved reading about the challenges the girls must overcome, not only in their assigned tasks but also in their relationship with each other and family members. I especially enjoyed the poignant letters from their grandfather. Overall a great read and can't wait to see what else this new and up-and-coming author has for the Young Adult genre.

Not Our Summer is a wonderful read that may be geared for young adults but adults will love too. It’s such a great story and the characters are so well developed. It’s also so fun to read about all of their adventures and found myself rooting for KJ and Becka. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!!

Not Our Summer was an enjoyable, heartwarming read. Growing up in a family where there is dysfunction, hurt and resentment, without forgiveness is all too common. This was a feel good story of coming of age and acceptance and forgiveness, with the openness of youth, and the wisdom of an elder who was too late fixing things on his own.
