Manipulation (Diversion Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 96 ratings

Lucky Lucklighter has a new life. His old life wants him back.

He traded trafficking for taking down criminals with the Southeastern Narcotics Bureau, and a drug-lord lover for a man on the right side of the law. Bo Schollenberger found the way past the thorny defenses of Lucky’s heart, and made Mr. I-Get-Along-Fine-Alone think about his and his closets, stevia in the sugar bowl, and a picket fence—with a good lock on the gate.

Now Bo is missing, and a voice long silenced asks, “Did you miss me?” Lucky must deal with a devil from his past to get Bo back.

And if Bo isn’t willing to come? A drug ring needs its back broken before flooding the US with a designer high, seductive and undetectable. But there’s a fine line between good and evil, and a truckload of temptation urging Lucky to cross.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

You will know Eden Winters by her distinctive white plumage and exuberant cry of “Hey, y’all!” in a Southern US drawl so thick it renders even the simplest of words unrecognizable. Watch out, she hugs!

Driven by insatiable curiosity, she possibly holds the world’s record for curriculum changes to the point that she’s never quite earned a degree but is a force to be reckoned with at Trivial Pursuit.

She’s trudged down hallways with police detectives, learned to disarm knife-wielding bad guys, and witnessed the correct way to blow doors off buildings. Her e-mail contains various snippets of forensic wisdom, such as “What would a dead body left in a Mexican drug tunnel look like after six months?” In the process of her adventures she has written twenty-four gay romance novels, won several Rainbow Awards, was a Lambda Awards Finalist, and lives in terror of authorities showing up at her door to question her Internet searches.

When not putting characters in dangerous situations she’s a mild-mannered businesswoman, mother, grandmother, vegetarian, and PFLAG activist.

Her natural habitats are airports, coffee shops, and the backs of motorcycles.

Arrrghhh, Eden Winters, I may never forgive you. I want the whole Lucky Lucklighter saga right now, in full, I don't care if it's two thousand pages!

There are few other authors whose work resonates with me like Ms. Winters'. She is absolutely brilliant at creating compelling, complex characters, characters you identify with, root for and bleed for. Lucky and Bo are two such characters. This is book four in the "Diversion" series, and (improbably enough), each one gets better and better.

We left them, at the end of the last book, standing exposed as a long-term undercover drug investigation goes bad. Our heroes are OK, but who know where it goes from there. "Manipulation" takes the story up just a few moments after the end of the previous one, with more explanation and even more mysteries. There's lovemaking (hot), a maturing relationship (Lucky actually goes looking for a house for both of them - a huge step), truly evil, demented drug lords and a laboratory/factory south of the border brewing up yet more death and insanity for Americans forever looking for the next thrill.

Bo is revealed a little bit more in each book. He started out, in the first one, as a bumbling and prissy rookie, partnered up with Lucky - who who hates having any partner. Lucky was once the lover of the powerful (and surprisingly ethical) drug dealer, Victor Mangiardi, and kept in a lifestyle to which he had not been accustomed as a youngster on his father's farm. Lucky was raided, arrested and forced to testify against his lover, Victor, who apparently, killed himself in prison. After two years behind bars, Lucky is released to an anti-drug agency in Atlanta to bring his knowledge of the drug dealing world to bear on the other side of the law. By the time "Manipulation" happens, Victor has completed his sentence (two years ago, actually) and voluntarily remains with the drug bureau and his now-lover, Bo.

Both men's back stories appear to be ephemeral. Bo, the vegetarian and former pharmacist, turns out to have been a decorated marine who has seen combat and can more than take care of himself. He also turns out to be a brilliant undercover operative who takes on entire personnas at will - his most recent as the enforcer for a biker drug gang.

Victor, on the other hand, may not be dead, as an almost forgotten voice reassures Lucky, who is tied up in the trunk of a car, and a message appears on his bathroom mirror: "Did you miss me?". The voice and the message turn out not to be from Victor, but from his nephew Stephan, who has taken over Victor's business, mannerisms, voice and mode of dress to try to leverage Victor's reputation with his own crew and competitors into a position of power and control for himself. Stephan kidnaps Lucky and spirits him down to his drug plant in Mexico where Lucky finds Bo still working undercover as "Cyrus", the enforcer.

All hell breaks loose. There's lots of action, conflict, death and destruction dealt with the sure hand of a master author. In fact, the scene and action are so cinematic that this book would make a great gay-themed action/adventure movie.

And there are secrets yet to be revealed. Lucky always thought he was just a boy-toy to Victor when, in fact, Victor had already planned to retire from the business and leave the country with Lucky as his companion. The true depth of the relationship is revealed in "Manipulation" and it comes as a heart-warming surprise to Lucky - not that he'd ever leave Bo - but that the man he was so deeply involved with cared so much about him and his future.

And, Ms. Winters leaves several tantalizing hints about what his future might be, including several references to "the will". Did he leave his fortune and properties to Lucky? We won't know until the next installment, which I, for one, await with bated breath.

Ms. Winters is, quite simply, a great writer. Not good, great. From the very first line of every single book, she holds me captive. It's hard to put any of her books down. They are propulsive and eloquent with economical descriptions that paint surprisingly vivid scenes and action.

Don't miss this book, no matter what you do. But if you haven't read the previous books in this series, by all means, go back and start with the very first one. This can certainly be read as a stand-alone, but if you skip the previous books, you will miss the sheer delight in experiencing the colorful, believable and moving unfolding of the characters and the story.

But no matter where you start. Don't miss any of this wonderful series.

OMG, this was freaking amazing!!!!! More intense, more suspenseful, angrier and Lucky, darn it, just melted my heart. The book starts right where the third left off with both Bo and Lucky alert and waiting for someone to make their move. But as the time passes and nothing happens, Lucky is sent back without Bo, which gives him too much time on his own to contemplate about his relationship with Bo and his fears. But Bo's sudden disappearance puts everything into perspective throwing Bo in the middle of the biggest illegal dr*g operation on the other side of the border.

This was a non stop roller coaster. Both Bo aka Cyrus and Lucky had to use their acting talents, subterfuge and cunning to stay ahead of the game while trying to save innocent men who were being used as if their lives don't matter. It was a test for both men as agents and lovers - will they make it back unscathed or will this change them and their relationship forever.

Many secrets long buried about Lucky's past finally came to light lifting Lucky's guilt and helping him to make tough decisions. It's a cat and mouse game they play but the poison ready to ship makes it so much deadlier. I loved it. There were moments that I thought: "This is is! They will never make it!" It was nerve wracking to see both Lucky and Bo go through so much but the love and devotion they had for each other, excellent ability to do their job and hope that they can trust someone out there carried them through to the finish line.

Some things are still left unanswered, the bad guys are still out there but hopefully not for long, but Bo and Lucky are never surer about each other than now - Bo has a long way to go to recover and Lucky will be there for him no matter what. So good! I highly recommend it!

Read from Diversion - volume 2

Manipulation picks up right where Corruption leaves off. Lucky and Bo are still under cover channeling their alter egos Cyrus Cooper and Ricky Getsinger. They “escaped justice on a technicality” after the bath salt running 441 Cruisers got busted. Their new assignment is to hole up together in the hopes of drawing out the drug suppliers who may see as a way to them as a way to re-establish their pipeline. It doesn’t take long before the pair of them are drawn back in. This time however instead of being little fish in an outlaw motorcycle gang; they’re over the border in Mexico playing with the big kahunas in cartel land.

This time around it’s also very personal. The blast from Lucky’s past that reared his head in the last installment is back. It’s not his ex. lover Victor; but Victor’s weaselly nephew Stephan – who apparently thinks he found his big boy pants. The Victor mystery deepens, and this story left me hoping that he did cut a deal. Victor seems like a really decent guy (for a drug dealer) and his being alive wouldn’t feel like any threat to Bo and Lucky. Lucky has moved on and his feelings for Victor are based in sentiment.

Speaking of Bo and Lucky; or Cyrus and Lucky – because apparently Lucky’s efforts at dying and being reborn as Simon Harrison were for naught. Everyone who counts knowing exactly who he is. I liked this installment more than I thought I would. My fears, from reading the story synopsis; were not realized. Despite grappling with ongoing issues Bo and Lucky remained a strong couple without any over the top relationship angst. The “be careful who you trust” relates to Lucky’s boss and mentor – the larger than life “Uncle Walter”; who Lucky has reason to believe knows more than he lets on about Victor’s fate. Bo for his part, continues to struggle with his demons, which get an extra-kick from his new employer testing the product on him. Lucky may be getting over his commitment issues, but nothing says “relationship complication” like trauma and addiction issues. Still it’s always clear they don’t want anyone other than each other.

There’s a lot of action in this one; and engaging side characters. Stephan was a little over the top as an arch-villain. Lucky house hunting is adorable and hysterical. I hope we see Nestor again. He’s a cool guy (for a drug dealing cartel leader) and he gave Lucky some interesting background on their shared lover (Victor). Lucky and Bo/Cyrus as always make time for some sexy interludes. I like them both individually and I think they’re adorably cute together; and yet – the chemistry I don’t entirely feel. The sex scenes are explicit and well done; I don’t know why these 2 are more lukewarm for me when they get between the sheets – or outside on a bed of one needles – but there it is.

Manipulation, much like Corruption; doesn’t so much end as wrap up. Stephan loses control of his operation, but Bo and Lucky don’t get to hang around and mop the floor with him. They do get out of Mexico and Bo is off to rehab to get his act together; leaving Lucky to deal with his own aftermath alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un tome sombre et prenant
Reviewed in France on January 28, 2016
