Baxter Beaver, his wife Beatrice, and his 2 kits Bruno and Brutus are settling in for the winter. Baxter just wants to be left alone, but a human approaches him. Beavers usually stay as far away as possible from humans, but this one is very agitated and seems to want Baxter to come with him. Jay the pesky gray jay joins in and off they go. Turns out a little human – a child – is trapped under the ice and the large humans are desperate for Baxter to help rescue him. After the little human is safe Baxter goes home. His wife calls him a hero but he doesn’t think it’s such a big deal. Help was needed and he helped. Now can he just be left alone? Apparently not. Food – tasty food – starts to appear outside the Baxter Beaver Family Lodge. It seems the humans want to pay back Baxter’s good dead.

The Christmas Beaver is another delightful children’s story from author Mike Martin (yes, the Sgt. Winston Windflower Mysteries Mike Martin). The Windflower mysteries are wonderful, Martin’s Christmas in Newfoundland — Memories and Mysteries book series is wonderful, and so are his children’s stories. Full of good folks (and animals), positive messages and little life lessons we could all follow and beautifully illustrated. A delightful read for adults and children.

Thanks to the author for providing an advance copy of The Christmas Beaver. I loved it. Everything by Mike Martin goes to the top of my to-read list. I voluntarily leave this review; all opinions are my own.

Baxter the cranky beaver was just trying to nap when someone roused him out of a good sleep by pounding on the ice above his lodge. When he got to the surface, he saw a human wildly gesturing and grunting at him. He didn’t speak human, but his friend the pesky Jay interpreted and told him the human needed his help to save a little human. He was unsure, because “humans smelled bad and often had sticks with them that made a lot of noise.” But the man clearly needed help, so Baxter followed him, despite his fears. And after facing his fears and helping someone in need, Baxter learned a lesson about giving and receiving.

This is a sweet, well-written “children’s” book for kids of all ages. The writing is simple and clean, and the positive story is touching – not sappy, but uplifting. It’s a departure from Martin’s excellent cozy mystery series about a Canadian Mounty, and reading it made me smile. This would make a great Christmas gift for a special reader in your life, or maybe just a small gift for yourself when you need a lift. I’m pleased to add it to my bookshelf and will be sharing it with some young readers in my life.

The spirit of Christmas comes alive through this tale of somewhat crusty beaver dad and his relationship with an annoying Blue Jay and Humans. See what happens when the beaver saves someone he can’t even begin to understand. Embedded in this heartwarming story is a message of acceptance despite differences. (Thanks to the Great Spirits, Blue Jays received the gift of language and Interpretation.)
I thought there were hints of the Good Samaritan story, helping when needed, not passing to the other side.
The lively illustrations lift the story and add to its charm. They support the storyline and round out it’s creative character.
Canadian author Mike Martin one again gives us a gift to engage our hearts. A special story for the whole family to enjoy at this time of the year.

Many thanks to the author for this ARC

A sweet story about how a grouchy beaver finds the true meaning of Christmas by being kind to others and spreading cheer.

Children need to have positive reinforcement in today's mixed-up world about doing good and being unselfish by thinking of others first. Mike Martin, an author of the Windflower Series, wonderful books, now has children's books. His kind and sensitive nature is evidenced in his writing for youngsters in this book and another.

A wonderful addition to your children's library. I kindly received an ARC for this book and wrote an honest review.
