"Getting Schooled" is a humorous, insightful, occasionally irreverent, and blatantly honest memoir of Joel Edmund Anderson’s life and career as a high school teacher. Beginning with his first foray into the field of education as a shy and terrified student teacher in a Conception Junction, Missouri, and continuing through the trials and tribulations as a substitute teacher in the suburbs of Chicago, a TOEFL teacher in the Peace Corps, and a full-time teacher at various schools in California, Arkansas, and Alabama, Anderson reflects on the day-to-day chaotic roller-coaster ride of a life of a teacher. With chapter titles such as, “It’s a Hard Knock Life!” “There’s Blood in the Water…I Think It’s Mine!” “The Faculty: Staff…Infections and Meetings,” and “Classroom Antics: Vibrating Pants, Rancid Gas, and Conch Shells,” Anderson not only relates the real life daily triumphs and tragedies of teaching high school and navigating the education system, but he reminds teachers why they are in education in the first place and encourages them to learn from those quirky and unscripted experiences of the classroom. As Anderson says in his book, teaching is an improvisational art form, so realize that often it is the unscripted moments in life that teach us the most about life. Veteran teachers will be able to laugh along with Anderson's confessions of the the occasional chaos that broke out in his classroom and his struggles and joys as he learned to become a better teacher. Beginning teachers will be given a glimpse into what kind of career they are getting into as well. As the title says, "Getting Schooled" is all about the lessons teachers learn as they attempt to plan out their careers and live their lives.

I had the privilege to be one of Dr. Anderson's Alabama students from 07-09, we even elected him to speak at our Commencement. He was the best teacher I have ever had, on a high school or college level.

Getting Schooled is full of dozens of hilarious stories that each contain a critical lesson involving both the student and the teacher. Dr. Anderson makes it clear that not only was it his goal to properly educate his students, but to influence them in a positive way that will stick with them their entire lives, all while learning more about himself as an educator.

Most of these stories I can remember from when he told them to us in his classes, and even being involved in one or two of them. If you think they're funny in this book, hearing him tell them in person is entirely different. Some of the biggest laughs I can remember from high school came straight from Dr. Anderson (especially the stick figure devil story).

Now that I'm an adult and can look back on high school life, I found myself thinking "I always loved his classes, but I never realized how much I had in common with him" when he made references to music, movies, and other forms of media. I then realized that studying in his classes is where I learned all these comments and references; from Dr. Anderson himself. What he taught me in his Worldview classes will never be forgotten, especially the section we spent on Postmodernism within popular music. I greatly appreciate how his Worldview classes prepared me for college and adult life as a whole, while always keeping the material interesting and enjoyable, even if he had to kick my desk a few times when I dozed off.

I really enjoyed reading this book and look forward to what other works Dr. Anderson will complete in the future.

I am not a school teacher, but my wife is. So I know how difficult that profession can be. Joel's experiences reflect much of what every teacher has experienced, but just hasn't written down. Two main things struck me while reading this book. First is Joel's way with words. He knows how to turn a phrase and incorporate interesting metaphors. Second is how insightful he is about the everyday life of a teacher and how one can turn a non-educational moment into a "teaching" moment. If you like easy to read, insightful, and comedic reading, I highly recommend this book.

Well-written and often humorous musings about the non-glamorous and demanding but deeply-rewarding life of a teacher.

"Good stories live and breathe and inspire people to live their lives in a fuller, more spiritual way—not the kind of spirituality that detaches one from the real world, but the kind that embraces the real world and seeks to re-create it in some way." - Dr. Anderson, Kindle location 1697, end of chapter 4

Thank you for the good stories, Dr. Anderson! I enjoyed your Bible class.

"Getting Schooled" is a nostalgic romp through the trials and tribulations of a teacher trying to make it as a novice teacher and eventually becoming a seasoned veteran of teaching. The stories give a marvelous character development of the author as he progresses through his years of teaching. Humor is definitely the authors' weapon of choice, in regards to not only his teaching methods, but also in his perspective of life. I can only hope that that Dr. Anderson will continue to write more books based from his teaching experiences in the future.

As Joel's friend, I have heard many of these stories first hand over the years. If you are a teacher, you will enjoy this witty memoir of Dr. Anderson's experiences as a secondary school teacher.
