A revelatory book on rethinking change, creating a rugged and flexible mindset and identity, and developing habits for life's intensifying flux.

From social disruptions like economic recessions, pandemics, and new technologies to individual disruptions like getting married, career transitions, and becoming a parent, we undergo change and transformation—both good and bad—regularly. Change is not the exception, it’s the rule. Yet we endlessly fight it, often viewing it as a threat to our stability and sense of self.

Master of Change flips this script on its head and offers a path for embracing and even growing from life’s constant instability.

Brad Stulberg, sustainable excellence expert, coach, and bestselling author of The Practice of Groundedness, offers a new model that describes change as an ongoing cycle of order, disorder, and reorder—yes, we return to stability, but that stability is somewhere new. Drawing on modern science, ancient wisdom, and daily practice, Stulberg offers concrete principles for developing a mindset called rugged flexibility, along with habits and practices to implement it. Along the way, Stulberg reveals:

  • How to be in conversation with change instead of it happening to you.
  • The importance of expectations
  • Why cultivating a rugged yet flexible sense of self is key to a strong identity.
  • How to take productive action during a challenge.
  • The paradox of both making meaning and moving forward.

In the end, Stulbergreshapes our entire perception of change and shows us how to grow in its midst—ultimately helping us move forward better, stronger, and wiser than we were before.

Review

"Change is inevitable. Will you let this reality destabilize or empower you? Brad Stulberg's immensely wise and timely book provides a powerful roadmap for a tumultuous world." — Cal Newport, New York Times bestselling author of Digital Minimalism and Deep Work

“According to the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, you can’t step in the same river twice. Brad Stulberg makes you wonder why you’d want to. Change is inevitable, but if we learn to struggle with it, not against it, we become like rivers ourselves: fluid, flexible, yet ruggedly defined. This book speaks to the twists and eddies in our lives with uncommon warmth and wisdom.”  — Kieran Setiya, author of Life Is Hard: How Philosophy Can Help Us Find Our Way

"Fantastic, wide-ranging, and deeply profound, Brad Stulberg's new book is a reminder that the most important two-word summary of life is: everything changes. In a world of constant economic, technological, and political upheaval, it's more important than ever that we learn to face life with tragic optimism—to continuously rediscover meaning and strength despite life's inevitable challenges and suffering. Stulberg's book is an exceptional guide to this critical virtue. A must read." — Derek Thompson, staff writer at The Atlantic, host of Plain English podcast, author of national bestseller Hit Makers

Master of Change challenges our inherent resistance to change, providing carefully researched suggestions that will help you embrace and rise to meet it. Stulberg’s thoughtful book is a delight to read and will arm you with valuable wisdom for navigating life’s unexpected plot twists.“  — Katy Milkman, New York Times bestselling author of How to Change

"Uncertainty and changeability are the reality for us all. This is a fascinating and inspiring field guide not merely to 'coping with' this reality, but plunging into it – even becoming one with it – so as to grow and flourish here and now." — Oliver Burkeman, author of Four Thousand Weeks

"In a world where constant flux is the only certainty, the ability to reframe and adapt to change — rather than resist or deny it — is essential to wellbeing. In Master of Change, Brad Stulberg wields his characteristically deft mix of science and philosophy to provide a blueprint for embracing the unexpected." — David Epstein, author of Range

Why Tragic Optimism Works

Why Tragic Optimism Works
As a law enforcement leader I can’t recommend this book enough. When faced with despair on the daily, understanding why wise hope and wise action might be the anecdote and provide a clear path forward. My favorite lines of the book, “if you expect and predict like to be hard, then you won’t be surprised when it is – which, in and of itself makes life easier, and also improves your chances of finding equanimity and meaning amongst change and struggle.”

This was such a helpful and easy understand book. Great to help navigate change but also how to live a positive and well adjusted life in general. I loved the idea of making decisions when based with change that align with our core beliefs. This was helpful since I'm often guided by fear. There were helpful tips for how to do this since it's hard in practice. I could go on and on. This is a great book. I found it by hearing the author discuss it on the good life podcast. I'd recommend listening to it as it's a great summary of the concepts in the book. For someone currently faced with a big change in life this really gave me some helpful tips on how to reframe it and navigate it in a way that will improve my life which helped me reframe this from scary to exciting. I think this will definitely change the way I navigate this transition in my life since I will now have more courage to be led by my core beliefs rather than fear.

I got this book thinking that it would be about change in organizations and that it would be helpful in my work on improving processes. It’s about that, but it’s primarily about dealing with change personally. Since organizations are composed of people, how people handle change informs the larger picture; understanding this can help you overcome barriers to change on a larger scale. But individuals are at the center here.

While a theme of the book is how to use action to get past the energy-draining impacts that change can have, Stulberg consistently points out that forced positivity is not the answer to anything. He emphasizes reflection and embracing feelings of sadness and loss, with an understanding that you can move forward.

Each chapter ends with a summary of key points, and the book ends with some key questions to ask and actions to take to help you handle change more effectively.]

At the organizational and personal level, change is constant. Accepting and adapting to it is essential. This is not a book about embracing change per se, though that’s part of it, but acknowledging the inevitability of change, understanding that it’s a path to growth, and accepting that this path forward can also include difficulties, which you need to accept and embrace as well. This quick-to-read and easy-to-review book is worth a look if you want a guide to being more resilient and want to learn how to make the most of the inevitable change around you.

Leaders who embrace the principles outlined in the book can inspire their teams to adapt to change with agility and enthusiasm. By fostering a culture that values innovation, embraces uncertainty, and encourages kaizen, organizations can stay competitive in today's fast-paced business landscape. Additionally, the book's emphasis on the psychology of change can help individuals cope with personal transitions, such as career changes or life events, by providing strategies to manage stress, build resilience, and maintain a growth mindset.

This was a really concise, actionable personal development book. It called back to a lot of the resiliency/life change books I've read throughout the years that I would definitely recommend to someone just getting into this subgenre to use as a launch point. The end of chapter summaries, summary chapter, core values list, and recommended reading parts stand out as things I'd like to continue seeing in personal development based books.

After reading Stulberg’s The Practice of Groundedness and following his Growth Equation blog, I honestly expected a bit of a rehash in this new book. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Stulberg provided yet another valuable framework for self-improvement—genuine self-improvement—both acknowledging the difficulty of change but also offering a practical approach to make it happen.

What do I love best? That Mr. Stulberg crafts his thoughts in a way that don’t make me feel like a failure before I even give his suggestions a thought. Once again, he readily maintains that no matter where I’m at, positive change is possible. And then he provides a comprehensive explanation of how to make that change happen, even if I periodically stumble along the way.

Brad Stulberg is indeed a refreshing voice in the “self-help” section.

Just got off a Zoom meeting with author Brad Stulberg where we talked about this amazing book. Change is unavoidable, and even good, as Master Of Change reminds us. There's good science in here, too. So whether you are a Realtor anticipating a change in the industry or a person living through grief of some kind, this book will give you encouragement, tools and understanding.

Master a of Change is a thoughtful and well written book. It describes why we often feel so much tension and/or anxiety when facing change. More importantly, it walks the reader through well researched steps to help process and move forward from that stress/anxiety. The examples that Stulberg uses are timely, interesting, and most importantly relatable.

For the coaches out there, as a professional collegiate and youth sports coach I have personally found Stulberg’s work to be incredible useful not only to me personally, but also professionally. I have been able to take many of the actions he describes in Master of Change (and his previous books) and use them in my coaching. My athletes also adopt much of what I have learned from Stulberg.

In short, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to better learn about themselves and the world around them.

5.0 out of 5 stars “Master of Change” is one of the best books of 2023
Reviewed in Canada on September 19, 2023
I pre-ordered Brad Stulberg’s “Master of Change” because I was looking for some guidance on how to navigate change. You see, I am undergoing transformative change with the loss of my parents.

Mr. Stulberg’s book has been extremely helpful. A major takeaway for me was the author’s discussion of core values. I’ve thought about my core values before, but “Master of Change” encouraged me to put pen-to-paper and write down my core values. Knowing your core values is a helpful anchor in guiding you toward doing things that are most meaningful to you.

The author’s 10 tools at the conclusion of the book is a nice wrap-up of all the author’s insights. All of them resonate with me. After core values, the next big idea from the book for me is non-dual thinking. Non-dual thinking is something that I’ll be thinking about for a very long time.

“Master of Change” is comprehensive in the treatment of navigating change. The author draws from many disciplines like sports, psychology, Stoicism and Buddhist philosophy. I feel grateful that Mr. Stulberg did all the research and presents his findings in interesting ways for the reader to understand. Mr. Stulberg reminds me of a sherpa when it comes to helping his readers in navigating change.

Mr. Stulberg’s “Master of Change” is one of the best books that I’ve read in 2023. If you are looking for a book on how to navigate change, this book is for you. I highly recommend it.
