A Study in Desire: The Rockliffe Dynasty Book 1 Kindle Edition
Theodora Prescott has lost everything. Recently widowed and drowning in debts, she’s forced to accept help from the last place she wishes to seek it—her late husband’s estranged family, fronted by the icy and domineering Dowager Marchioness of Rockliffe. Theo’s plan is simple: endure living at Rockliffe House, submitting to the dowager’s will, only until she can find a way to provide for her children and reestablish her independence. But as it turns out, the unwanted tutor hired for her sons becomes less something to endure and more an unlikely source of comfort … and attraction.
An accidental tutor …
Upon leaving Oxford, Jeremy Clare never had ambitions of tutoring children. However, when his sensible goal to settle down and become a vicar goes awry, accepting the tutor position that falls into his lap seems as good a way as any to get his life back on track. Developing feelings for his pupils’ mother is certainly not part of the plan. Yet the more he sees of the strong-willed, passionate Theodora Prescott, the more his desire becomes impossible to overlook.
An undeniable but risky allure …
Theo has vowed never to let emotion dictate her decisions again, and Jeremy has sworn not to stray from a practical path forward. But while a relationship between them would be fraught with obstacles, can an unanticipated chance at love make it worth the risk? Giving in to their desires could lead to the greatest happiness for them both. However, Theo’s life at Rockliffe House comes with other expectations. And the dowager marchioness, it happens, is not someone to be crossed …
A Study in Desire is a steamy regency romance with a guaranteed happily ever after.

About the author
Jane Maguire is a Canadian author whose lifelong passions for history, writing, and love stories inevitably led her to begin penning historical romance novels. While her love of historical fiction spans all eras, she focuses her writing on high society in the regency period. She enjoys crafting stories with lots of angst, which makes giving her characters their happily ever afters all the more satisfying.
When she isn't at her computer writing and researching, you can find her vacationing in the Rocky Mountains, playing classical music on the piano, or simply curling up with a cup of tea and a good book. She lives with her husband, two kids, and a very floofy cat.

I really enjoyed the way this story was written because I wasn't aware of reading it - I just did!
The characters of Theodora and Jeremy were perfect for each other and the more I read, the more I loved them. Their heated passion was quite intense at times and fitted in well with the rest of the story.
The story also has two young boys and a dog in it which could be quite catestrophic if not written in well, but I didn't have a problem with them because they complimented what was going on and really added some entertaining interludes.
In my opinion, this is a lovely story with some absolutely likable characters who kept me interested and well entertained and that is why I read!
I enjoyed how the prologue set the tone with a deception that colors everyone's interactions with the dowager. She was quite the piece of work and I wonder if Jeremy hadn't come along, would Theo's story have progressed as it did?
Theo was a lovely character. She had backbone, she was independent and smart, and such a kind and loving mother. I enjoyed Theo's interests in painting and writing. Jeremey, while only three years younger than Theo, felt even younger than his years; perhaps because he had less life experience than Theo up until now? Jeremy was an okay character. There were moments where I wish he was more forthright, but I did admire his care for Theo's boys, Ben and Alex.
If you enjoy a romance that heavily involves children, a sweet family dynamic, and dusted with the dramatic undermining of a sort of, but not really, well meaning foe.....then you might enjoy giving this book a try.

I read and reviewed an advanced eARC of this book thanks to the author via Booksprout. All honest opinions are my own.
*The FMC is usually older and more experienced, especially in comparison with other HRs
*The MMC is in a subservient position, so he has to show his desirability in ways other than being the traditional masculine provider
*The employer/employee element that can be squicky is balanced out by the masculine/feminine power play
Why do we bring this up here? Well, in A Study in Desire, Jeremy is the tutor for Theodora's two sons. Theo is recently widowed, and even more recently fell on hard times. She feels like she's been forced to move in with her MIL and go along with plans to bring up her sons as little aristocrats. She didn't even have a say in Jeremy's hiring, so she's surprised to find that her sons' tutor is (dare we say) HOT.
Not only is he hot, he's also good with her kids, good with his hands (IYKWIM), maybe a little too ethical, and a really supportive partner. So what could go wrong here?
We always love an external conflict that the MCs have to solve together. That was the case here, making the ending very satisfying.
This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the novel.
This book was different from most regency romances in that neither one of the characters had enormous wealth to fall back on. Both of them were living on the periphery of society, so they had to avoid making any missteps. I think I had to wipe my eyes constantly for the entire second half of the book. The ending was happy but getting there was a struggle. This book was steamy. The characters were well-written and there was also humor, drama and deceit. And a heroic dog too.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The widow Theo and her sons all fall for the boys’ tutor Jeremy. But they are under the thumb of the domineering Dowager Marchioness, Theo’s mother-in-law. The realities of women in the Regency and the struggles of the working class are integrated into this story seamlessly. The two boys are also well-depicted, helping layer the story as both adults try to do what is best for the children as much as themselves. The story unfolds slowly at first, as the forbidden relationship had to, but escalates quickly, with a surprising friend adding a fantastic twist for the reader in his support of Theo.
One unique aspect I love is that the prologue opens in the Marchioness’s POV. All in all, I loved this book.
