Stacey Margaret Jones grew up in De Smet, South Dakota, or the real-life Little Town on the Prairie. Her retired-librarian mother kept her in the best books from childhood to young adulthood, cultivating a love of reading and writing that now lies up there with her love of dresses and dogs. She and her brother and neighborhood friends used to play “college” with encyclopedias, which probably was a predictor of her two undergraduate majors, elementary education and English literature, and two master’s degrees, one in communications management from Syracuse University and the other in creative writing from the University of Central Arkansas.

She has worked in a battered women’s shelter, a daily newspaper, a Czech economics university, state universities in South Dakota and Arkansas, a Minneapolis investment bank, an ad agency, a global marketing services company and a private school system before going off on her own to write and provide research services to marketing and public relations clients. Jones’s other avid interest besides education is travel, and she has been to 37 countries, from New Zealand to Bosnia. She lived in Prague for a year in the 1990s, teaching English and traveling Europe with friends and family.

An introvert and the youngest in a family of nine children, Stacey has always been an energetic observer of relationships around her, and her market research career satisfies her keen interest in why people do the things they do. Her poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction focus on such observations and her interest in human behavior, particularly interpersonal relationships. Stacey lives in Conway, Arkansas, with her author husband, Jay Ruud, and their four dogs, where she writes, runs, teaches yoga, walks dogs, obsesses over what she eats, tries to wear all her dresses, and plots her next trip abroad.

From the first page, this is one of those novels you'll find you have to finish quickly. Although the plot itself is exciting -- Catherine went for her morning run and didn't come home, and the action moves at a swift and immediate pace -- it serves as a backdrop for what really turns out to be the portrait of a lonely husband who's forced to come to terms with truths about himself as painful as his wife's past infidelity. The author knows how to paint with negative space -- even in a small scene like the meeting in a coffee shop between the narrator and the arrogant man who still loves his abducted wife, there's a men's group starting to gather at a nearby table, a familiar sight that seems to magnify the remote isolation of these two men who must now form an ad hoc duo. Through these scenes and the narrator's struggle to find clues in the past that would solve the mystery of Catherine's disappearance, the reader moves further and further into the layers of his tender, troubled marriage. Insightfully written.

The book was really good. I was surprised at the ending. I was hoping for a happy one, or at least show how they found her body. But overall, it was still good 👍.

Mr. Catherine is a thrilling page-turner with emotional weight. From the beginning you are swept up in the story of Catherine who has gone missing from a morning run, her husband's efforts to find out what happened to his wife and the nefarious characters that they both encounter in Little Rock, AR. The story of Catherine and her husband is told through flashbacks, therapy sessions and journal entries that give the reader a peek into their marriage from both points of view. The author doesn't paint a picture of marriage perfection broken apart by this tragedy. Instead, Jones captures the very real essence of a partnership where sacrifices can breed resentment and love is tested by events big and small. Mr. Catherine is a story of a man trying desperately to find his wife, both literally and figuratively. I highly recommend this book and look forward to more stories from Stacey Margaret Jones.

Interesting plot, but for me, somewhat of a downer.

What an impressive first novel! Stacey Margaret Jones’ “Mr. Catherine” had me hooked from the get-go. She takes the reader on a revelatory journey via the eyes, ears, emotions and heart of the main character. The mystery is uncovered bit by bit...but is everything as it seems? Clever twists keep pages turning. And Ms. Jones’ beautiful writing style nearly tricked my brain into thinking I was watching, not reading, because her descriptive narrative so effectively conveyed the details and moods of her characters and settings. Warning to readers: do not begin this book if you have anything important to do that day. It will be difficult for you to put “Mr. Catherine” down until you’ve read it all the way through. I can’t wait for Ms. Jones’ next novel!

“…the sensation that I was telling myself something that the rest of me knew wasn’t true at all, like my thoughts were waves on the surface of an ocean, whose deep currents moved in the opposite direction.” A thriller that is perfect for book club! Looking forward to our group discussing the inherent compromises and intricacies of marriage and the various powers of secrecy that Jones exposes. Sentences that beg to be highlighted and re-read. At different times, I felt like I was hiding in the pantry or riding shotgun while witnessing the plot twist, turn, and unfold. A must read!

Stacey Margaret Jones weaves a tightly knit mystery involving a missing woman and the efforts her husband, Mr. Catherine, as he tries to solve it while struggling at the same time to hide from the police private facts that might further damage his pride and his wife’s reputation. Jones skillfully depicts the psychological undercurrents of the two main characters as they make choices that set them on a path to conflict. Well told and beautifully written. A story to enjoy while reading -- and to ponder after.
