A Child's Guide to the Holy Eucharist: Rite II Paperback – April 1, 1999
Purchase options and add-ons
A practical, illustrated guide that helps children and their parents prepare and have a deeper understanding of Eucharistic liturgy.
Written for grammar-school age children, this guide to the Rite II Eucharistic service presents the full text of the service from the Book of Common Prayer alongside commentary and cartoons that clarify the meaning of the words. Horton focuses on the "hows" and the "whats" of the service itself, in the belief that participation and information are, in the long term, the keys to Christian formation.
This practical manual will be useful to a wide variety of groups. Church school teachers and pastors can use this in Sunday school classes, or during the service itself to help children participate more fully. Parents and children will also find this a helpful tool as they explore Christian life together.

I thought about keeping it in case we later wanted a book of the whole service but, having read it through, that won't work either. I'm also not a religious scholar but I was disappointed in what it DID say about communion (p. 46):
"The priest invites everyone to come to the Lord's Table. Everyone is invited to share the holy food of God.
After you receive the bread, you can say 'Amen.' When you say 'Amen' [at this time] you are saying something like: 'Yes, thank you Jesus for your special food.'"
Huh? I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they just wanted to simplify the message but it's not right for my family. Maybe it's specific to my kids but if they can read well enough to follow along, they can begin to understand the host in a proper way. Ironically, my 7 year old who wanted to know and take her first communion (Episcopal not Catholic so no ritual nor specific timing) already knew way more -- at least on the topic of communion -- than was covered in this book.
And I grew up knowing "Amen" as "I believe" and read now that it's "truly" "certainly" or "so be it."
Maybe I can donate it somewhere. Will have to check the price but I'm not sure it's worth mailing back. Bummer.
