A practical, illustrated guide that helps children and their parents prepare and have a deeper understanding of Eucharistic liturgy.

Written for grammar-school age children, this guide to the Rite II Eucharistic service presents the full text of the service from the Book of Common Prayer alongside commentary and cartoons that clarify the meaning of the words. Horton focuses on the "hows" and the "whats" of the service itself, in the belief that participation and information are, in the long term, the keys to Christian formation.

This practical manual will be useful to a wide variety of groups. Church school teachers and pastors can use this in Sunday school classes, or during the service itself to help children participate more fully. Parents and children will also find this a helpful tool as they explore Christian life together.

My family and I are new to the Episcopal/Anglican faith. This book was so helpful in familiarizing both our six-year-old son and us, his folks, with Rite II! The left-side pages break things down with some drawings to help children understand what is going on throughout the service, while the right-hand pages contain text directly from the Book of Common Prayer. My son has asked to read this book together several times since we've purchased it. As a result, we all feel much more comfortable with the rituals and customs of the Episcopal Church.

I bought this book for my great grandsons, ages 3, 5, and 7. Although they cannot read it by themselves, they can understand it when it is read to them. It also stimulates questions that will lead to their understand the Holy Eucharist.

My kids really enjoy using this in church, however, I think there should be a Rite I book also. It makes a great gift too for someone who is just learning the ropes of the church and why we do the things we do.

The layout of this book is very helpful with explanation on the left page and the service on the right taken straight from the Book of Common Prayer. It describes the Episcopal Church liturgy well and is the only book I've found that includes all four Holy Eucharist prayers. Be aware however that the theology presented for Holy Communion is that of a mere memorial. There is nothing to suggest even the barest hint of Real Presence, spiritual food or receipt of Christ, rather we receive "special food". There is also a worldly focus and no mention of heaven or life everlasting, but lots about how God wants us to make this world a better place. Because of this, I can not use it with my First Holy Communion class but did get some good ideas from the book.

This is an amazing resource to explain the Eucharist to children and adults alike.

This is a great book to explain all the parts of the service. Very child friendly. But, it only covers Rite II. Wish it covered Rite I also.

Okay, so it's my naive mistake but this is not just about the "Holy Eucharist" which I learned growing up as communion. This is about the whole service. So it's not at all what we wanted. I wanted an overview of communion, how to take it, what it means, etc.

I thought about keeping it in case we later wanted a book of the whole service but, having read it through, that won't work either. I'm also not a religious scholar but I was disappointed in what it DID say about communion (p. 46):

"The priest invites everyone to come to the Lord's Table. Everyone is invited to share the holy food of God.

After you receive the bread, you can say 'Amen.' When you say 'Amen' [at this time] you are saying something like: 'Yes, thank you Jesus for your special food.'"

Huh? I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they just wanted to simplify the message but it's not right for my family. Maybe it's specific to my kids but if they can read well enough to follow along, they can begin to understand the host in a proper way. Ironically, my 7 year old who wanted to know and take her first communion (Episcopal not Catholic so no ritual nor specific timing) already knew way more -- at least on the topic of communion -- than was covered in this book.

And I grew up knowing "Amen" as "I believe" and read now that it's "truly" "certainly" or "so be it."

Maybe I can donate it somewhere. Will have to check the price but I'm not sure it's worth mailing back. Bummer.
