About the author
Hiya! My name is Jared Millican and I Love to write. A couple of years ago I got an idea for a novel so I decided to give it the old college try, and it was wonderful. As a child, I had several Learning disabilities. I was diagnosed with ADHD and dyscalculia although they didn't know that much about it then i grew up a while ago in a time we like to call the 80s. I also had a severe learning disability in English. I was and am a terrible speller, and of course math Yikes let's never speak about it again! I spent the better part of my school years bouncing in and out of special education classes but never really getting the help I needed. but, while I struggled with most subjects in school I always excelled at reading. I loved to read as a child even reading things that I was told i was not supposed to read as a kid growing up in Alabama "Que" Dantes Inferno, Paradiso, and the other divine comedy! As a D- student at best, the school system had very little hope I would be much of anything and I was told to get a trade because I was good with my hands. It was The 80's those were different times. After high school, I got a job and went to Junior college and then a four-year college attending Jacksonville state university for graphic design with a minor in English. To say I struggled would be an understatement. Lots of people go to college for six years their usually called doctor. Anywho in my last semester my wife found out we were having twins so I left college 12 hours short and hustled to provide. six years later I had my idea for a book and set about writing it all down. Encouraged by family and friends after I finished it I decided to try to get it published. Well, that went over like a lead balloon "Rejection City" so I self-published and sold a few. Then I wrote another book and it sold a few. And now I'm currently working on several novels, children's books, a collection of short stories and poetry, and even a few movie scripts! i also have one finished play that is about to get its first stage reading It's my belief it's never too late to embrace your dreams and make them a reality. I may not be the best-selling author but I sure am happy, and I think you can be too.
TLDR; I am a Spaz that loves to write things, oh yeah I had some learning problems I kind of overcame!
Well, that's my Bio Thanks for reading!

Taking a classic setting like the land of Oz, and Emerald City in particular, could have backfired. In this case, however, it really paid off. This isn't the simple city of the movie, but a city much more reminiscent of 1930's Chicago or New York, with technology from earth brought through various portals and modernizing both Oz and the society at large. This included bringing the bad with the good, things like organized crime, firearms and explosives. This mix of the old and the newer is an interesting mix, as we see groups like the munchkins, flying monkeys and the various witches interacting with tech like cars, electricity and zeppelins in a completely organic way. The whole thing is a very surreal noir setting, and an absolutely intriguing setting with so many possibilities for future stories.
This brings us to the characters, who are such a fun throwback to those old pulp noir detective stories. Walter Diggs is that down on his luck, hard drinking and hard fighting gumshoe with a chip on his shoulder, who will fight for his clients and get to the bottom of their cases. He has deep roots in Oz, being the grandson of a famous person in Oz, and he feels the weight of that legacy daily, and sometimes fails to live up to it. However, he still keeps trying, and it seems like death is around every corner.
The supporting characters are a really fun bunch, ranging from a client looking for her missing father, who seems to be in danger herself, to a dangerous munchkin gangster madam. And that's not including the characters you'd expect, such as the witches, the Lion or Dorothy, Mayor of Emerald City. They have some really interesting arcs of their own, adding some interesting flavor to the story. The villains are partly out in the open, and part of a twist you won't expect, as they should be in a mystery. It's a fun journey discovering who's behind all the chaos affecting Walter's life.
This was definitely a fun read. I really enjoyed the noir elements mixed in with the fantastical elements of Oz, which the author took in some fun directions. Flying monkey's hiring out as enforcers for hire, munchkin crime bosses and tin man police are just a few of the fun surprises you have awaiting. Finding out who Walter's famous relative is was also a fun surprise, and this should have some appeal for fans of urban fantasy and noir detective stories. I highly recommend this one.
