Review

"Dr. Barkley gifts us all with this fourth edition of his classic work. You will find tons of new information--grounded in the most recent science--and the advice of one of the most experienced, thoughtful, and kind professionals we have. This book is brimming with wisdom that parents can put to use every day. Bravo, and thank you, Dr. Barkley!"--Edward M. Hallowell, MD, coauthor of Driven to Distraction

"This book woke me up, gave me a good cry, consoled me, then helped me plan for the future. Dr. Barkley gave me a better understanding of exactly how and why ADHD has been such a serious problem for my daughter. The book is written so you can easily digest it and follow the step-by-step advice to advocate for your child. It is candid and empathic. This book is my 'go to'--I refer to it daily and I will be giving copies to my family members and school counselors. Parents need this book!"--Kirsten W., Detroit

"This book is packed with useful information that makes it a go-to resource for the parents and kids I see in my clinical practice. It is difficult to imagine any question a parent might have about ADHD and its treatment that is not addressed here. The book provides how-to guidance in a straightforward, step-by-step format--including helpful tips for getting a thorough evaluation, dealing with behavior challenges, working with schools and teachers, managing medications, and navigating the teen years."--Peg Dawson, EdD, coauthor of
Smart but Scattered

"As the mother of a 16-year-old with ADHD and as a speech–language pathologist working with children of all ages, I am beyond glad this book came my way! It is the most thorough and practical book I have ever read on ADHD. This book has helped me gain so much insight into the disorder, along with practical methods for tackling some of the most difficult and puzzling aspects of it. Dr. Barkley has given me immediate things I can do to improve my son’s life, and guidance I can provide to the parents of children I work with. I love the suggestions for structuring the home–school relationship to help kids reach their potential, and the suggestions for taking care of yourself as a parent. This is an incredible resource for families."--Jennie M., Austin

"Barkley has provided a scientifically grounded, up-to-date resource for parents. Readers will discover critical insights and specific guidance--from managing behavioral, social, emotional, academic, and health concerns, to navigating difficult conversations with children, teens, and teachers. The book is informed by Barkley's clinical experience and decades of research."--Kelly B. Cartwright, PhD, Professor of Psychology, Neuroscience, and Teacher Preparation, Christopher Newport University

Wow. Just wow. This book is incredibly negative. I’m 70 pages in, and I cannot tell you how many times he’s told the reader that children with ADHD will fail at life for x,y,z reason. I bought this book as I thought it would help me parent my child with ADHD. It has been absolutely useless thus far. And to be honest inaccurate. I was diagnosed with ADD as a child, and I have a great career, management my household successful, and manage money very well… some of the things this author claims ADHD people cannot do.Also it bothers me that he acts like all ADHD children are affected by ADHD to the same degree. In my opinion, there are varying degrees of ADHD… maybe he gets to that point later in the book? I don’t know if I’ll be able to finish this book. It’s pretty alarming to continually hear the opinion that your kid is going to fail at life. Here’s some excerpts from the book.. see pictures attached to review.

This came highly recommended by our psychiatrist and it proved to be so helpful for me in working with my son who has ADHD. Having a summarized place of ALL the research that has been done on ADHD for the past 200+ years (yes, it's actually been that long!) was reassuring. I understand how and why medication works which was helpful in overcoming my fear of "medicating" my child. This book also has steps on how to improve your relationship with your child - literally anything you can wonder about with parenting an ADHD child - and it's all evidence based. Excellent resource.

This was the first ADHD book I've read, recommended by a top local therapist. My initial reaction to the first few pages was I felt they alone were worth the price of the book. The next chapters gave great explanations to help me to really understand what ADHD is and isn't for the first time. It became a major foundational block of my "understanding" and acceptance of people on the Executive Function Developmental Deficit Spectrum. The application section (the point system) wasn't as great for my case due to a comorbid diagnosis, but I assume it could work for many kids. After catching up on other books, I may continue with other books by Barkley. I highlighted so much of this, sometime times whole pages, and will re-read those parts, and maybe the whole book again sometime.

Russell A. Barkley is one of the top authorities on ADHD. Our pediatrician recommended him and I'm extremely glad he was able to point is in the right direction. This book is evidence-based and a reliable source, which is a refreshing change from a lot of books I've found on the subject of ADHD (and parenting children with ADHD) that are often filled with a lot of unsupported anecdotes and pseudoscience. There is a helpful guide in the back for further reading filled with books that have been vetted by the author, as well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Many practical tips
Reviewed in Sweden on January 30, 2024
Lots of tips, very comprehensive, easy to read. I have a bit of a personal issue however with the tone and style as it tends to be negative and dramatic, pointing out all risks and dangers related to ADHD, leaving less to no space for how to turn some of the ADHD traits into something positive. There are many “successful” people whose achievements are in parts due to / thanks (or at least related to) to their ADHD. Role models are important too, not just discipline and systems to make the disorder more manageable. It seems that children with ADHD are reduced to being problematic kids and nothing else.
I like that the book is full of practical tips and techniques well described that are easy to implement. On the other hand I feel I would go crazy with so many systems were imposed on me, especially if I were a teen. So I think while there’s good inspiration in the techniques and practical approach, I find it all a bit too controlling in the end.
Also in my experience the old-fashioned authoritative methods and again the very controlling approach that is suggested in this book is very likely to damage the relationship if applied to systematically or even be contra productive if the child is a bit rebellious and sensitive, which will typically be the case of the vast majority of people affected by ADHD.

Parent to newly diagnosed child with adhd and add and I found this really interesting. Recommend by CAMHS and many other professionals. It’s a big and wordy book but I found it fairly easy to read and very informative. Russell Barkley has lots of his talks on YouTube too which I also found useful. I’d recommend it!
