Have you looked at a low-carb diet simply as a means to lose weight? What if you learned that combining a low-carb nutritional approach with a high fat intake produces a powerful therapeutic effect on a wide variety of health conditions that most people think requires medication to control?

That’s what
Keto Clarity is all about. Jimmy Moore, the world’s leading low-carb diet blogger and podcaster, has reunited with his Cholesterol Clarity coauthor Dr. Eric C. Westman, a practicing internist and low-carb diet researcher, to bring you the crystal-clear information you need to understand what a ketogenic diet is all about and why it may be the missing element in your pursuit of optimal health. This book includes exclusive interviews from twenty of the world’s foremost authorities from various fields bringing their depth of expertise and experience using this nutritional approach. Moore and Westman clearly explain why ketosis is normal, how this nutritional approach is being used therapeutically by many medical professionals, a step-by-step guide to help you produce more ketones and track your progress, real-life success stories of people using a ketogenic diet, and more.

The solid evidence for nutritional ketosis in dealing with many of the chronic health problems of our day is presented, including coverage of epilepsy, Type 2 diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), heartburn (GERD), nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The good evidence for ketogenic diets is also shared in dealing with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), Parkinson’s Disease, dementia, mental illness, schizophrenia, bipolar, depression, narcolepsy, and sleep disorders. Plus, you’ll get the details on the emerging science that is showing great promise in treating cancer, autism, migraines, chronic pain, brain injury, stroke, kidney disease, and so much more.

Keto Clarity is your definitive guide to the benefits of a low-carb, high-fat diet. Full details on Jimmy Moore’s yearlong n=1 scientific experiment of nutritional ketosis, in which he used sophisticated blood testing technology to track and monitor his production of ketones and blood sugar to achieve rather remarkable effects on his weight and health, is also presented as well as food shopping lists, 25+ low-carb, high-fat recipes, and a 21-day meal plan to get you going on your ketogenic lifestyle change. Keto Clarity gives you a whole new perspective on the work that the late, great Dr. Robert C. Atkins started in earnest with his promotion of the low-carb approach beginning in the 1960s. That revolution continues boldly in this book designed to shift your paradigm on diet and health forever!

I waited until I read the entire book to do a review. This is the final book that I have read on a sting of books lauding the benefits of the low carbohydrate, high fat lifestyle. Everything I had read previous to this book expressed the science and theory behind becoming a "fat burner" vs. a "sugar burner". They explained why the concept of low-fat everything was a terrible idea from it's conception in the 1950's and why eating low-fat has made our Nation fat and sick. We've been lied to by our nutrition scientists. I've been telling my patients the wrong things about diet for the past 30 years, and I also have a degree in nutrition. I, and our dietary guidelines, were wrong. This is elegantly outlined in the groundbreaking book "The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet" by Nina Teicholz. She made the medical community take notice and re-think the low-fat debacle. There are a slew of other books that say the same thing. However, most of these low carb, high fat (LCHF) books are rather technical and don't actually tell you how to follow the principles behind becoming a fat burner. This book not only tells you the theory behind this new health movement, but gives you a step by step guide on how to to loose the weight you could never loose on all of those diets you have tried. This is not a diet book, since becoming a fat burner is the no-hunger way of loosing weight. It's not anything like dieting. Diets fail. The author, Jimmy Moore, started at 410 pounds and tried all of the diets until he discovered what most of Americans are doing wrong. Strangely, this book was co-written by a number of nutritions experts in the field since Jimmy doesn't have a bunch of initials after his name. What a great idea. A wonderful book written by someone who is credible since he lost so much weight, but backed by a number of credible nutritional experts and physicians. Highly recommended. Most of my staff are loosing weight on this program - medical assistant's and nurses alike. They are all eating lots of fat and watching their lipid parameters improve greatly while enjoying extra energy. I have a happy and soon to be skinny staff. Yes, I apparently inspired my staff by loosing over 35 pounds myself over three and a half months by eating wonderful foods and not counting calories, ever. I am rarely hungry. There is more science behind this concept than the Paleo movement and explains why the Paleo and other similar diets work fairly well. This is a bargain in the kindle version. The best advice I can give my patients who want to loose weight and avoid disease is to read this book. Now I know why all of my skinny vegan and vegetarian patients who have been avoiding fat all of their lives are getting diabetes, having heart attacks and strokes. Remember this equation: Elevated Insulin Equals Inflammation and Fat Storage. And sugar burners have high insulin. Are you a sugar or a bat burner?

Men, you can skip this one unless you are looking to help someone of the female persuasion. Me and the ladies are going to chat. I'm not going to tell you much about what's in the book, because there are hundreds of reviews already, some going into that in great detail. I'm going to tell you my story:

When I was young, I could go low carb and lose weight so quickly, so easily. I loved the Atkins way, but I couldn't stay faithful. Now that I'm getting up there and coming into the beginning of menopause, things are just different. You know how it is. I have allowed so much weight to creep up on me, which led to pre-diabetes, high blood pressure, and general low quality of health. I would think to myself, "I can just go low carb and lose that, no problem." Well, it's a problem. Over the last 5 years or so, I have been losing weight, and it's been a terrible struggle with quite a bit of the roller-coaster effect. All in all, I am still down from my top weight, but not without tremendous strife. Often I would lose 10 or 12 pounds, think I was doing great, cheat once, and before I could blink an eye, 2 months had passed and I had gained that entire 12 pounds back plus 5.

So what was going on? After reading Keto Clarity, I learned that cutting my carbs just wasn't enough. I had been over eating protein, and it was converting to sugar in my body since it didn't have enough carbs to do that with. Oh, brother! No wonder I would wake up starving after a great steak and salad the night before! I was enjoying my steak a little too much. I am still tweaking my carb/protein/fat numbers, but I am getting closer to a good level for me.

Take heart, ladies. This was about a month-long process for me, and it might be for you too if you're in the same boat. My other exclusively female issue is that my cycles are getting shorter instead of longer as I age, which adds up to more time in the PMS state of mind/hormones/body. Stinks for me. During that time, it is extremely hard for a woman to experience ketosis and lose any weight. It had been a real source of discouragement. My husband went on a regular low carb diet and he has lost almost 20 pounds in the same month that I have been trying and trying to lose 3. But here's what I've observed in my body over the last month. The first thing that happened was my appetite disappeared. That was a huge thing for me, because I am prone to overeat and not really recognize when I am full, especially during those times of PMS. After about 2 weeks (still no weight loss happening) I noticed my fingers and ankles didn't have end-of-the-day swelling (from fluid retention) any longer. The next week I got up the nerve to discontinue my blood pressure medication, because it's a simple diuretic, and I am not retaining fluid. It never really worked that well for me anyway. Doctor said sure, as long as I keep a log and report back. My blood pressures have gone down slowly and steadily in the past week. This is great motivation for me, because I no longer view this way of eating as a quick-fix diet plan, but a medication for my body. Weight loss is a happy side effect of my "medication." That attitude is helping me stay faithful.

But even with that attitude, after 3 weeks and no weight loss, I needed to get serious about raising the feared fat and lowering my protein intake. Now that my appetite was under control, this was so easy to do. Here's what my day looks like now: I have coffee with cream and liquid Stevia in the mornings. I love my cream, maybe too much. I usually have 2 mugs of coffee. Then depending on my schedule I have a regular sized lunch and a snack at dinner time, or vice-versa. In the last week I have finally lost that 3 pounds I was talking about.

So here's the important part, and I'll put it in all caps so you can see it's really, really important -- DON'T TRY THIS FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS! STICK WITH IT FOR AT LEAST 3 MONTHS BEFORE YOU DECIDE IF IT IS OR IS NOT FOR YOU, AND LEARN ALL YOU CAN ABOUT IT, STUDY YOURSELF, TWEAK IT, MAKE IT YOUR OWN.

If after a few months, you've sincerely given it the old college try and seen no good results, then move along. But if you really educate yourself and do this thing, you are going to love it. I have more energy than any (still) obese person should have. My next purchase is going to have to be glucose measuring equipment because mine is out of date. I'll update this review when I get that technology. I also cannot afford the fancy ketone testing equipment, but the strips are telling me I'm finishing my first month very well.

My brain is clear. My moods are even. That angry time has turned into that mildly annoyed time. I am loving this food for the brain and hormones. The book also teaches many other ailments that a ketogenic diet can help with, and you will find it very hard not to share it with everyone you know. What a great mass-Christmas gift! But be careful, strangers at the grocery store don't necessarily want to hear that their autoimmune disorder just might be helped by this way of eating. Their loss.

This is a layman's book written by a layman who lost a ton of weight by entering into ketosis. Inasmuch as he once weighed something like 400 pounds, his example may not be something that most of us could relate to. But recognizing that he is just one guy with a lot of enthusiasm for what worked for him - and having apparently decided to make a career out of his experience - he very wisely has pulled in just about every recognized living expert on the subject of ketogenics to answer the many questions that surround the controversial heir apparent to the once-discredited, or at least rendered highly dubious, Atkins diet. The argument for ketosis, not just for weight loss but also for overall wellness, is extremely well presented and argued, to the point of obvious bias. So it's helpful that the experts are called in whenever a remotely scientific conclusion is called for. Thus, having a regular guy explain it, and having his learning experience validated by credible experts, adds up to a very helpful and thorough primer on how to use this technique to make ourselves better. I'm on it, and I feel great.

Come li facciamo?
Come li otteniamo?
Come li misuriamo?
E cosa fanno?

The 'Go-to' book on Ketosis.

Explains everything simply and in detail with multiple expert viewpoints.

Ketosis is a topic difficult to grasp - not conceptually - but in our minds This books makes us challenge conventional wisdom about our bodies, metabolism and our health.

In my opinion, the Science all makes a lot of sense, and a lot of mainstream viewpoints on its benefits are starting to emerge globally, although there is much resistance by years and years on standard dietary practice.

Read it and see what you think. Reality is reality, whether we know it or not.....
