When the Imagine Network commissioned a documentary on mermaids, to be filmed from the cruise ship Atargatis, they expected what they had always received before: an assortment of eyewitness reports that proved nothing, some footage that proved even less, and the kind of ratings that only came from peddling imaginary creatures to the masses.

They didn't expect actual mermaids.  They certainly didn't expect those mermaids to have teeth.

This is the story of the Atargatis, lost at sea with all hands.  Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy.  Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the bathypelagic zone in the Mariana Trench…and the depths are very good at keeping secrets.

“LEAVE THE DARK PLACES IN THE SEA FOR FOOLS AND EXPLORERS.”
This is a short story that counts as 0.5 in the “Rolling in the Deep” series. The author also writes books under another name – Seanan McGuire – although when I picked this up, I hadn’t read anything else by her. (I have since and she is one of my absolute favorite writers now!) I wasn’t sure of what to expect from this going in, as it wasn’t a series at the time and I randomly spotted it in the Kindle section of Amazon through browsing. I love anything relating to oceanic mysteries or horror stories, and mermaids will always grab my attention, so this is right up my alley! The story follows a group of about 200 people as they board a large ship called the Atargatis to film a documentary about the possibility of mermaids existing in the Mariana Trench. The 200 are made up of the ship’s captain and her crew, various scientists, and the documentary employees themselves – as well as a group of performance mermaids, excited to flex their fins in the big, blue sea. Everything seems to be going well until the scientists stumble upon exactly what they were looking for – and exactly what they weren’t.I absolutely love this, and have actually read it a couple of times since the first. A full length book was released after I read this first novella, and I immediately purchased it. I brought it with me on vacation and it freaked me OUT! I’ve since recommended both the full-length book and this novella several times to several people; it’s one of my forever favorites! A friend I made through the bookish community, author Eric Guinard, actually sent a copy of the physical novella to me as a birthday gift this year and I am so thankful! I didn’t think I’d own a physical copy due to its limited release, and am so happy to have it! A reason to read it again – for the fourth time now!

Her books have been a stable in my library. This story brings the reader in with in-depth knowledge like this was real and terrifying at the thought these women of the sea “are”. Find the time to read this and the following book to a fascinating world of the mythological mermaid!

When Imagine Entertainment commissioned a voyage to see if mermaids were real or not, the entertainment company, crew and scientists aboard the Atargatis never anticipated the horror that awaited them at the Mariana Trench. What was supposed to be voyage full of fun, science and more turns into something deadly and dangerous within days of reaching there. For the Bathypelagic Zone of the Mariana Trench is very good at keeping its secrets and in its depths, the secrets there are deadly.

Wowsers is all I can say after reading this novella that starts the whole new series from author Mira Grant. ROLLING IN THE DEEP captures the fun and more that became the Atargatis’s final voyage and the horror that transpired there. I was enthralled when I read the first full length book in the series, Into the Drowning Deep and when I saw there was a prequel story I had to grab it. It gives a better backstory about what happened on the Atargatis and helps bring into focus what was glossed over in the first book, Into the Drowning Deep. I liked seeing the different characters and finding out who they were. Some of the scientists’ titles had me going to the dictionary just to figure out what it was but otherwise the short novella was a fun story even if it chilled me to the bones.

ROLLING IN THE DEEP answers many questions that I had while I read Into the Drowning Deep and I enjoyed seeing through many of the different characters eyes what happened on that fateful voyage. This is an author who really grabs you by the throat when you open one of her books. The story moves quickly, sprinkled with short bursts from Imagine Entertainment media bulletins and other TV shows that showcased the tragedy of the Atargatis. The characters are quite well written and life like and I enjoyed all of them, from the tough as nails captain and deaf first mate to the fun Mermaid swimmers that Imagine Entertainment company brought aboard. Each character’s personality was unique and enjoyable. The mermaids were interesting in the whole horror movie sort of way and I for one hope to god I never meet one. Mira Grant really dashes my hopes of a Disney mermaid such as Ariel with this series. If that was what you are hoping for then I can tell this is not it. ROLLING IN THE DEEP is a story with monsters that come alive from myths and more the blood that is shed in search for it. It’s a fascinating story and one that left me on the edge of my seat till the very end.

ROLLING IN THE DEEP is a perfect introduction to the series I highly recommend reading this first though you don’t really have to before Into the Drowning Deep, though it does give more background on what happened and more on the Atargatis. Now all I can hope is this author goes back to this fascinating subject and I hope we won’t be waiting too long on it.

What a rush. For a short story it sure came packing a lot of terror and bloody mayhem. And we like that, don’t we?

I like how the story is presented. It’s like found footage, only in words instead of tapes. And you don’t miss a thing.

With failing ratings, Imagine Network discovers its golden ticket when they decide to do a documentary on mermaids. Many believe they exit and others scoff. Mermaid, myth or real? The Atargatis sets sail hoping to delve the depths and find answers. They travel to the an area far from land, anchoring over the deepest part of the ocean, in an place known for mysterious disappearances.

Along with Image Network members, scientists with studies in several areas, and a film crew to document everything, an unusual group is included. Professional performing mermaids. Partly for show and also to provide a mermaid sighting if the real ones deign to avail themselves. I really liked the gals with tails. The descriptions of the many colored mermaids was amazing. I could see them cavorting and dashing about in the water.

Just as visual was the description of the real mermaids. They claw up from the depths, scale the ship, and devour their bounty. Slimy, gray things with mouths full of needle sharp teeth and cold lifeless black eyes like a shark. I admit I have a fondness for the pretty, sparkly mermaids, but I’ll always go for the scary ones. The ones of nightmares. I feel if we ever do find real ones, they’ll be a lot more like these.

Knowing the outcome, that none survived, didn’t take away from my enjoyment while reading this book. In fact, it heightened my curiosity and excitement. I was going to get my evil mermaids and a high body count.

What I didn’t expect was how easily I connected with some characters. This isn’t a long book but I came to know and care for several of them. And then there were those I felt deserved to become mermaid poop.

I was hooked before I even started reading Rolling In The Deep. Just look at that spectacular cover art. Read that thrilling blurb. This was horror fodder for me and I read it in one bloody, happy gulp.

This was honestly terrifying. I loved the that this was just as scary as Into The Drowning Deep, but this made it all the more terrifying. Mostly because these characters didn’t know what to expect, they went in planning to make a faux documentary about mermaids not to actually find them and have their faces eaten off. This is one of those things that will stick with you and make you not want to ever set foot on a cruise ship. Rolling In The Deep is getting a solid five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Böse Meerjungfrauen
