"Mind, body, and soul of characters like Jamie and Claire Fraser of Outlander." The Historical Fiction Company

An aristocrat haunted by his sins…

After losing his bride to a hated Englishman, Pedro Daun shuts himself in his winemaking property. Drowning in port, he hopes to find oblivion from his military past.

A girl with dawn in her eyes…

Kind and whimsical, Anne Maxwell moves to Portugal to help her new sister-in-law. She dreams of finding the perfect suitor to give her the unconditional love she never had.

Shadows can taste light…

A twist of fate brings them together. Anne glimpses in Pedro's eyes a yearning for love that rivals her own, but the cynical Count isn't the perfect prince of her dreams. Pedro craves Anne's touch more than the air he breathes, but he is unwilling to taint his angel with the sins from his past.

A conspiracy is revealed…

A false accusation turns them into fugitives. Running from a treacherous enemy, they plunge into an ocean of intrigue. As their passion grows, Anne discovers that love isn't the perfect matter of fairy tales. But can Pedro forgive himself for his past and allow Anne into his heart?

If you love antiheroes in desperate need of redemption, this historical romance will conquer your heart. The Taste of Light received the "Highly Recommended" award of excellence by The Historical Fiction Company and is a Booklife's Editor's Pick.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Besides rich historical detail, vibrant prose, and engaging relationships, Siniscalchi offers a plot that never lets up, weaving a delicate tale of a man who believes he is undeserving of love and a woman who expects love to be everything it is not." Booklife - Editor's Pick

"This romance charges like a bull from page one, and you are swept into haunting past secrets, political intrigue, and the fierce intensity of love."
The Historical Fiction Company

"The tension and pacing throughout the book are impeccable and sprinkled with incredibly human-like reactions. The evolution of both Pedro and Anne makes for an exciting, adventurous, and satisfying read."
Reader's Choice Reviews

"A skilfully plotted historical romance inhabited by two memorable protagonists." Wishing Shelf

"A sprawling 19th-century drama with a flair for the romantic, The Taste of Light is a lavish tale of tragedy, salvation, passion, and the endless puzzles of courtship. Capturing the tone, detail, and societal pomp of a Victorian classic, this titillating read is a love letter to Portugal, fate, and the freedom that only true love can provide."

Stories are the very fabric of life. I want to transport readers to exotic settings, where they can find romance and happy endings and hopefully bring some back to their daily lives. Portugal brims with beauty and passion, and I research every tiny detail of my novels, hoping to make the reader treasure my grandparents’ country as I do. I have a loving husband who still is my hero and two amazing kids. When it’s cold and rainy, I run inside to read and watch movies under blankets, sipping wine. You can find me on the beach during summer, surfing with my family.

Will proving his innocence be enough to free him from his past …

I remember having seen the first book in this series advertised but an overwhelming reading schedule did not allow me to give it a try.
When the second book appeared as an arc opportunity, I turned around this book but was still reluctant, December is busy month, adding more books to my list is the best way to drive to me to madness.
It was only thanks to a fellow review that I finally decided to give it a go.
And I can only thanks Gloria for her wonderful insight, else I would have missed a wonderful tale of redemption and love.

First I believe outside some mentions of battles during the Napoleonic wars, I have never read a book set in the area.
So just from the journey, I want to thank the author, I would have like a map to be included to understand and imagine the places the heroes visited.
But this story is more than an unexpected trip, this is a rollercoaster ride, a mad dash along the country to escape authorities and betrayal and find proofs of Dom Pedro’s innocence all the while he slowly let his walls crumble to admit Anne in his heart.
As Anne’s task is the most arduous, win Pedro’s trust to let him open his soul to her, she, an innocent bystander caught in a web of deceit he did not expect.

Having not read the previous book, I had no prejudices about Pedro, outside knowing he was not the hero of the day in this story.
But now is his time to shine. Yet his dark aura, violent past and guilt are dragging him down, more or less leading him to his downfall.
Still mourning the woman he believed to be his salvation, he drowns his sorrows in alcohol and anger.
Until an angel, a jewel of a young woman lands on his lap at the worst moment possible. Leaving him with no other option than to sweep her in his arms to avoid being hurt with him.
Anne has no idea who was Pedro until later in their escape, but she quickly sees the broken man, her good heart hoping to heal him. In her nativity, she believes all men to be good, only corrupted by life. Yet it is said candor that attracts Pedro, she is like a beacon in the night. Soon she becomes the air to breathe.

Returning to the historical romance genre with this book made me happy. I used to read them all the time long time ago.

Pedro and Annie are a great couple and I loved her optimism about love. Definitely steamy.

🖋️Review

Mozambique 1861 is where we start this book, our MMC, Pedro is on a mission to curb rebellions against the crown and safeguard the gold miners' interests. After the mysterious events in Mozambique, Pedro is struggling to overcome his inner demons.

Fast-forward to 1872 in Portugal where we meet Anne, our sweet and innocent FMC. She collides with Pedro, currently drowning his sorrows, in an unexpected way when there is an attempted murder. They travel the countryside looking for evidence and form an unforeseen bond along the way. This road-trip romance was so much fun!!! I loved the chemistry between these two characters! Pedro is swoon-worthy! 🫠 I enjoyed seeing him work through his inner demons.

The amount of research that went into this book blew me away. It feels as if I’ve stepped back in time for this one. Who doesn’t love a morally grey MMC and a good redemption story? The ending had me on the edge of my seat. I felt so many emotions reading this book, that I could not put it down. Read this book if you enjoy historical romance, redemption stories, or even just a good morally grey MMC that’s a bit rakish. I highly recommend this book and this series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant historical romance
Reviewed in Brazil on December 12, 2022
The Taste of Light is redemption, anticipation, and poetry interwoven into a brilliant historical romance. The story brings back the villain from The True Purpose of Vines, Pedro Daun, and places him at the center of a royal murder accusation.
The dark, haunted protagonist embarks on a journey to clear his name and bring to justice the real culprit. The task is daunting, but nothing the relentless soldier can't manage. Instead, Pedro's actual trial is held in his heart, as he is forced to flee his home alongside the sister of an old rival. Anne is a fierce romantic, a ray of sunshine amidst darkness—his angel. And much like the sun, she will force light into the brutal shadows of Pedro's past.
It doesn't take much for me to fall for a troubled man—especially one with a soldier's build—so my true surprise was how obsessed I became with Anne. The nuance of her pursuit of love, from naive dream to intense reality, was relatable and beautifully developed. I drowned in the rich dialogue, the dawns and sunsets they shared, and the heartfelt retelling of a famous Portuguese love story.

I love a book that not only makes me care about the main characters but also gives me a giggle along the way: Tony: "The new tutor sinks of ear wax." The author writes with detail but leaves out the unnecessary, making reading a joy. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
