355: The Women of Washington's Spy Ring (Women Spies) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,032 ratings

Who was the original Agent 355?
If you like the Broadway hit Hamilton, AMC's Turn, or Alexander Rose's Washington's Spies, you won't be able to put down this meticulously researched tale of family, duty, love, and betrayal!

1776: British sympathizer
Margaret (Meg) Moncrieffe expects to find the carefree America she remembers as a youth when she returns from her Irish boarding school. Instead, she finds the new country at war, with her father on one side and her new love, Aaron Burr, on the other. Will her misguided attempt to end the war result in dire consequences for the Continental Army?

After her husband Jonathan is captured by the British and dies aboard one of the notorious prison ships, a pregnant
Elizabeth Burgin realizes she is stronger than she once thought. But when the Culper Ring enlists her help on a prison heist, is Elizabeth willing to sacrifice everything in order to save the lives of strangers?

Instead of finding herself in danger when British intelligence officer Major John André shows up at her family’s doorstep,
Sally Townsend finds herself falling in love. Nonetheless, she seizes the opportunity to pass on intelligence to her brother, Robert, knowing that one false move could result in the noose for them both. What will happen when Sally finds out that Major André is playing the same dangerous game as she and Robert, albeit for the other side?\
Inspired by the true stories of these real-life heroines, 355 was a semi-finalist in the GOETHE Book Awards for post-1750s Historical Fiction!

355: The Women of Washington's Spy Ring

L'Agent Double

The Spark of Resistance

Marie-Madeleine

Who was the Mysterious Agent 355?

Who was the mysterious 355 that could “outwit them all?” Inspired by many of the same characters featured in AMC’s Turn and the Broadway musical Hamilton, 355: A Novel chronicles the lives of three real-life women who use daring, skill, and, yes, a bit of flirtation, to help liberate America.

Two sides. One war to end all wars

When a war like no one has even seen rages through Europe in 1914, three women are set on a collision course with history, and one of them will make the ultimate sacrifice.

The French Resistance is depending on these women to change the course of history...

As the free world crumbles beneath the Germans' jackboots, the French Resistance is depending on these women to change the course of history...

Can a lone woman stop the Germans’ advance?

1940: The air is dense with the thick, acrid smoke of German bombs as Marie-Madeleine departs Paris, utterly alone in the world. Her destination is hundreds of kilometers away, where Navarre told her to meet him. Surely he would have a plan to get back at the Boches and fight for their freedom…

About the Author

Like her character Addy in Thrown for a Curve, Kit has a practically useless degree in marine biology. A teacher by profession and at heart, Kit loves to impart little-known facts and dares you to walk away from one of her books without learning at least one new thing. She has written a few "beach reads" with intelligent and strong female leads. One of them, What It Is, was a previous Kindle Scout winner. Her newest book, 355: The Women of Washington's Spy Ring, keeps the strong heroines that are essential to Kit's books, but takes them back 240 years, to the genesis of America and the women who helped spawn it.

Outstanding novel with many twists in and out of Colonial and British lives and leadership during the Revolutinary War. The history of women spying during the war shows bravery and courage in the fight for freedom.

We enjoyed being brought back to the Founding Era and experiencing the trials, excitement and conflicts of the people then.

I am a very discriminating reader of historical fiction and rarely give 5 stars to a book. I would give this book higher if I could. Excellent portrayal of characters intertwined with historical facts. Very evident Kit Sergeant did extensive research. Many historical novels have a large romantic component which I find distracting. This book had none but kept my complete interest on every page. Highly recommend for a serious reader.

Then I would have realized about all the "batting eyelashes" and "fluttering hearts". Couldn't keep up with who fancies who. The author has an interesting story to tell, but I do not think it was told well. Sentences like "After a while a few more green-coated Raiders came in. They all sat down at the table" are pretty much the author's style; does not seem to me to be quality writing. Actually I would give this only 2 1/2 stars due to all the many characters and who-was-rowing-where tales. The best part of the book was the epilogue which was written in a straight-forward and informative way almost as if it were written by a different author.

Sergeant is a gifted writer who creates characters that really mean something. Her story is fascinating and inspiring in so many levels. A unique perspective to remind me of the blessings of freedoms that came from the sacrifices of so many. I loved it - and so will you.

Selene Castrovilla had a stand at a greenmarket in my neighborhood some years ago. When she told me about the Culper Ring and Benjamin Tallmadge, I was intrigued, and purchased her books, Upon Secrecy (about the Culper Ring) and By the Sword (about Tallmadge as a young soldier at the Battle of Brooklyn). Only now am I learning how important that battle was.
In an amazon search for the Culper Ring, I found Kit Sergeant's 355: The Women of Washington's Spy Ring, which I promptly bought, as well as her second in the series, Underground, about the Civil War. And, I became a beta reader for her "L' Agent Double" (World War I) and "The Spark of Resistance" (World War II, just released July 2020). It's not only been fascinating to read about these daring women, but very enjoyable to exchange emails with the author about the characters - almost as if we're gossiping about people we know.

This July 3rd, I watched the marvelous "Hamilton" on my PC. Afterward, I wanted to know more about Hercules Mulligan. Following my annual viewing of "1776" on the Fourth, I decided to begin "355: The Women of Washington's Spy Ring", and was surprised to learn that Mulligan was one of the characters. As most of the action in the book takes place in New York City and Oyster Bay on Long Island, the scenes are very familiar to me. When the author mentions that the statue of George III at Bowling Green was struck down by angry patriots, I knew the exact spot - I've been there. The activity of British warships in New York harbor? I've been to South Street Seaport and could imagine how it looked.
I could feel a lump in my throat along with the people watching the warships from their windows, their guns aimed on their city, and smell the smoke as New York City burned.
Already an officer under General George Washington, Benjamin Tallmadge was the founder and leader of the Culper Ring, the first American secret service organization, and I enjoyed learning more about the ring. I had read a bit about the Culper Ring, being intrigued by its history in New York City and Long Island. My own town in Queens, New York was a hotbed of Tories during the American Revolution, and I imagined couriers for both sides riding on roads I'd been on myself.
I was impressed by the bravery of Elizabeth Burgin, widowed mother of three, in taking part in a daring rescue of American prisoners of an ice-bound prison ship.
And British Major John André is also in the book. Ever since I saw The Scarlet Coat on TV while still in school I had admired André's integrity and wanted to learn more about him. Even Alexander Hamilton was outraged about André's ignoble death. ("The Fate of Major Andre: A Letter from Alexander Hamilton to John Laurens" is available on amazon.com.)
I already knew that Robert Townsend and his sister Sally played a part in the Culper Ring, so their exploits were knuckle-biting. British Colonel John Graves Simcoe and Major André being billeted in the Townsend home, with their plans involving Benedict Arnold and West Point being overheard by Sally, kept me turning pages as fast as I could read.
But Meg Moncrieffe, daughter of an English captain, spying for the British because Aaron Burr wouldn't marry her because he was ambitious and she wasn't a good enough catch? Her story was so stretched out with details of clothes and thoughts about the "handsome" American soldier. To think that rebel soldiers had to die because a spoiled girl naively fell for a line by a man made me angry, and I didn't want to read about her. And hearing about André's death, it seemed as if Meg left the British officers mourning their fallen comrade because they weren't paying her enough attention.
I know that Sally and Meg were supposed to have been in their teens, but I got tired of reading the word "handsome" and wanted to know more about the process of the spy work, and more details about André's capture.

Many people are familiar with George Washington and other heroes of the American Revolution, but they may not be aware of the spies who helped our troops outsmart the British. This book follows the lives of three women, Elizabeth Burgin, Margaret Moncrieff Coghlan, and Sarah Sally Townsend. In a time when women were subject to their fathers, husbands, or brothers, these women bravely risked love, safety, and reputations to assist the American forces. We may not definitively know the woman or women known as 355 by the Culper Spy Ring, but we are given insights into these ladies and how they came to value service to their country above all. This book is well written and easy to read, so it should appeal to people who enjoy historical novels and patriotic tales. I very much enjoyed this book and recommend it to other readers.

This book has many twists and turns; it didn’t really end where I thought it would. I enjoyed some of the “filling in” the lines of history. Plausible ways the real life characters could have interacted. Nicely done!

Based on true life .
The ladies seem almost to fall into the spying game.
I like how they are at first unaware how their actions are affecting the ones they know.
There is a brief description at the end of the further lives of the characters portrayed.
