A Stroke of Malice (A Lady Darby Mystery Book 8) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,809 ratings

Lady Kiera Darby and her husband Sebastian Gage are looking forward to celebrating with new friends at an exciting yearly soiree, but they soon learn that murder never takes a holiday in the latest riveting installment in this national bestselling series.

January 1832. After enjoying a delightful few weeks with her family, expectant mother Kiera and Sebastian Gage have been invited to the Duchess of Bowmontʼs Twelfth Night party in Traquair, Scotland. Though she normally avoids such fashionable, rambunctious events, Kiera is ready to join in the festive merrymaking. But upon their arrival at the opulent estate, it becomes obvious that all is not merry in their hostess’s home. The family appears to be under a great strain, and someone seems determined to cause mayhem among the guests with a series of forged notes.

Matters swiftly turn from irksome to downright deadly when the partygoers stumble upon a decomposing body in the castleʼs crypt. The corpse is thought to be the duchessʼs son-in-law who had purportedly traveled to Paris more than a month earlier. It is evident the man met with foul play, and Kiera and Gage soon realize that a ruthless murderer walks among them—and may well be a member of the duchessʼs own family. And when the investigation takes a treacherous turn, Kiera discovers just how deep the killer is willing to dig to keep their secrets from ever seeing the light of day.

Huber once more delivers a perplexing mystery, and finding answers falls to Kiera and Gage. Perhaps most puzzling is the presence of a body without any idea of its identity. The author’s writing is well-crafted… tho’ perhaps with a little more detail than I’d prefer, such as decor and detailed styles, colors, and accessories of fashion with every new gown (argh). Happily, some favorite characters appear, including Bree and Anderley, as well as the Marquess Marsdale. This tale’s mystery has a handful of moving parts, presenting the reader with more questions than answers. The answers to the several bewildering aspects of the plot are neatly unraveled, with a number of surprises being exposed. Our “Mr. & Mrs. of Mystery” are not only talented at uncovering the truth, and always respectful of each other, but they are also people of honesty, integrity and fair-mindedness who follow the truth wherever it leads, demanding justice and expecting a code of honor be followed regardless of someone’s elevated place in society or the aristocracy. This is a well-written tale of mystery in every sense of the word.

This is yet another wonderful addition to Anna Lee Huber's Lady Darby mystery series. She had me with the book's opening with a Twelfth Night celebration and if that weren't enough, it's in a Scottish castle, no less. The festive celebration of 1832, was all fun and shenanigans. That is, until the revelers encounter a corpse of relatively recent demise down in the crypt between the castle and the old monastery ruins, tucked in among the medieval monks' bones. Lady Darby and her husband, Sebastian Gage are quickly called upon to do their discreet inquiries. Many believe they know the identity of the corpse but others have their suspicions. This could be quite the challenge for our dilligent duo, especially as Kiera (Lady Darby) is far along in the family way.

I have loved this series from the start with its smart writing and well-researched historical detail. The exposure of and poking at the generally accepted (or at least tastefully overlooked) aristocratic social practices of the day, was quite amusing. If you enjoy an historical mystery with a small touch of chaste romance, then this might just be the series for you.

I have loved the Lady Darby series since the first book. Kiera and Gage have the most interesting mysteries. These books have the full package of historical mysteries.

There are great characters. Kiera and Gage are surrounded by Kiera's whole family as well as many of the friends they have meet along the way in this latest book in the series. It's always nice to be reunited with old friends. If this is your first time reading a Lady Darby book, don't worry that you will be lost. You might miss some of the backstory, but it won't impact your understanding or enjoyment of the plot. If you have been reading the series from the beginning, get ready for news about Bree and Anderley.

There is intriguing history. Anna Lee Huber loves her research and it shows in every book. There are no huge information dumps, but lots of interesting tidbits come through in her stories. In this case, the cholera epidemic that occurred during the time impacts the story.

There are wonderful relationships. Friendships, family, and romance are the heart of her stories. The characters are always growing personally and in their relationships with each other. But Kiera and Gage are the heart of the series and the love and respect they show for each other is inspiring and endearing.

But, most importantly, there is a great mystery. The stories keep me guessing until the very end. It is less about a plot twist and more about an "I had no idea." Very few books do that for me.

Buy it. Read it. You won't be disappointed.

I liked most of the characters and found them most interesting. I really enjoyed watching the couple doing the investigation. They were great at figuring out who was not telling the truth most of the time. I enjoyed this story.

The Lady Darby mystery series are outstanding. From beginning to end, the author captivates the reader. The endings are always spectacular with the culmination of all the investigations, and each case is handled so differently. There’s no room for boredom in her books! Happy reading to anybody, who reads the Lady Darby mystery series!!!

Huber writes wonderful historical mysteries. With credible, likable characters and others with redeeming qualities. This is a series, book 8 of 12 so far, and while they can be read out of order, it is always best to have the character development follow a reasonable timeline (weddings, births, etc). It has been a pleasure to see the confidence build and the lovely sentiment and marriage between the main characters. This one has a scottish taste, and holiday flair to it, but many characters to twist the plot.

While I enjoyed some of the book, I felt that we never moved forward with clues to solve the murder. Of course the murder is solved, just not the way most mysteries move along. Plus, can we save Keira from recklessly running around to stop a killer? She talks about how precious her unborn child is, but she’s riding in a carriage at breakneck speed. Sometimes murders are solved without putting lives at risk. And I’m still finding her sister Alana very irritating. I don’t like her bossy character at all.
