In an age fraught with terrorism, United States Secret Service canine teams risk their lives to safeguard the president, vice president, their families, visiting heads of state, and a host of others. Unprecedented access to these heroic dog teams has allowed a fascinating first-time-ever look at a very special breed of heroes.

Wherever the president goes, there will be dogs. They’ll be there no matter what the country or state. They’ll be there regardless of the political climate, the danger level, the weather, or the hour.

“If you let down your guard on the job,” says Special Agent Bill G., canine program manager, “it can change the history of the world.” It’s a burden Secret Service dog handlers take extremely seriously, regardless of their specialty. Tactical dog handlers on the White House lawn, handlers whose dogs sniff for explosives around the world, and those who walk their amiable floppy-eared dogs up and down Pennsylvania Avenue all live one common mantra: Not on my watch. Or my dog’s.

Secret Service Dogs immerses readers into the heart of this elite world of canine teams who protect first families, popes, and presidential candidates: the selection of dogs and handlers, their year-round training, their missions around the world, and, most important, the bond—the glue that holds the teams together and can mean the difference between finding bombs and terrorists or letting them slip by.

“These animals will gladly run into a hail of gunfire,” says "Stew," a Secret Service ERT tactical canine unit supervisor. “All they ask in return is for their handlers to throw the ball with them, pet them, and talk to them in an embarrassingly high voice.”

Secret Service Dogs
celebrates the Secret Service’s most unforgettable canine heroes. It is a must-read for fans of Maria Goodavage, anyone who wants a rare inside view of the United States Secret Service, or just loves dogs.

Secret Service Dogs tells the incredible story of the fearless animals who put their lives on the line every day to protect the First Family and the men and women of the Secret Service who love them. It is a heartwarming and compelling read that offers an inside look at the incredible bond between these dogs and their handlers—a uniquely American story of bravery, loyalty, and love.”
Kate Andersen Brower, #1 New York Times bestselling author of First Women and The Residence

“It has been said that the best nonfiction books are those that reveal a hidden world to the reader: a place they wouldn't otherwise be able to experience. Maria Goodavage's Secret Service Dogs is that kind of book—a well-researched and compelling read not only for dog lovers, but anyone interested in seeing high-level White House security operations from an insider's perspective.”
—Gerald Petievich, former US Secret Service special agent, author of To Live and Die in LA, The Sentinel, and other Secret Service novels

“As a guide dog user and survivor of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001, I appreciate and understand the value of the teamwork and trust that bind a canine unit such as those portrayed in
Secret Service Dogs. This book is a must-read not only for anyone who wishes to better understand dogs, but also because it is just a really good story. Maria Goodavage captured me right from page one. As Larry King said about my own book, Thunder Dog, ‘This is a page-turner.’ After reading Secret Service Dogs you will have a new and stronger appreciation for how to build a relationship with your own animal colleagues and friends. Enjoy. The read is well worth your time.”
Michael Hingson, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Thunder Dog

“Maria Goodavage takes us into a world that few know about and shows us just how special these dogs are. Although their work is serious, none of it could happen without the special relationships between the dogs and their handlers that come shining through.”
Gregory Berns, author of How Dogs Love Us

I have read all three of Maria Goddavage's books on working dogs, and I believe this may be the best of them, although I also recommend the others. We foster Military Working Dog puppies for the Breeding Program at Lackland in San Antonio so we know something about MWDs and how they are used in the field. It was interesting to learn about the similarities and differences in procurement, training, and deployment of the Secret Service canines. The puppies we raise are all Belgian Malinois or Dutch Shepherds, and the breed characteristics described in this book are accurate. These dogs are highly energetic, driven, joyful, and fierce creatures--all at the same time, in one 60-90 lb. package. Even the "washouts" we have adopted are forces to nature, and not "normal" dogs. The author explains that Malinois are perfect for some situations but not for all. Agencies, including the Secret Service, often deploy "floppy-eared" or "friendly-looking" dogs where close contact with the public is required since the "pointy-eared" canines are intimidating to many folks. It is important to understand the knowledge and consideration that goes into deploying the right dog for each job and to respect that all are needed for the program to be fully successful.I enjoyed the structure of this book even though others have criticized it. The narrative alternated throughout the book from facts about the dogs and the program to accounts of specific dogs and their handlers. It was basically chronologic but not obviously so. In my opinion, the author found an engaging way to provide basic information while also demonstrating the vital emotional component that allows the human/canine teams to function effectively. Dogs are not "equipment" as some believe; they are living, breathing, sentient beings who respond best when this is understood and acted upon.I recommend this book highly to all citizens. We fund programs for working canines in our military, law enforcement, fire departments, the Secret Service, and other public agencies. We see working dogs in many areas of our lives, and we owe it to ourselves and our communities to have an understanding of their value, their needs, the services they render us, and the great debt we owe them.I attached a photo of our 4 Malinois with our "normal" dog in the middle.

I am so glad that the Secret Service dogs are so well cared for and after their service they are still taken well care of.

I loved this book! I'm a huge fan of the author's previous books Soldier Dogs and Top Dog, so of course, I could not wait to receive my copy of Secret Service Dogs. I was completely immersed in the story of both the canines and their handlers. What a fascinating glimpse inside such a rare picture of the United States Secret Service. I was engrossed by the training, missions and bonds between the dogs and their handlers. I thought the section on how they carefully selected the dogs from a training facility in Indiana most interesting. I teared up more than once with emotion and with pride over these heroic dogs. You can tell the author has developed immense trust with the handlers as they have shared such extraordinary stories with her. I was going to take this book with me to read on the plane over the weekend.......but I couldn't wait, and so glad I didn't. I've already ordered extra books for my family and friends for holiday gifts!!!

This is an inspiring and well written review of the life and training of the Secret Service Dogs. They are indispensable at sweeping buildings and other locations for explosives. They also protect the White House grounds as well as the President, Vice President and assorted official visitors.

I was hooked at the outset, and read voraciously. Right up to the point where Ms. Goodavage spent hours and days and reams giving readers an intimate glimpse into the details surround Pol Pot and his savagery for no good reason. Two or three paragraphs would have sufficed to flesh out one of the USSS Officers. I'm on my second read now, and plan on skipping the part about the gent who suffered while living in a foreign land as a child.
On the plus side, prepare yourself with a box of tissues when you read some of the intimacies of Officers, dogs and end-of-watches. I'm a combat veteran marine, and the dust bunnies assaulted my eyeballs several times.
I'll read anything else Ms. Goodavage writes - her understanding of working dogs is spectacular!

If I could, I would give it 10 stars!! A very informative book about one of my most loved animals in this world, dogs! I knew there was extensive training on these dogs and others like the police dogs etc, but I had no clue just the vast amount of training that goes into these incredible animals. I have learned so much and now I will look at the service dogs with even more respect. The author narrates the book and she has a very pleasing voice so she is easy to listen to as well. I am so glad that I bought this audio book and will treasure it!

This book is a must read for dog lovers! It may be the author's best book yet!! Maria Goodavage once again skillfully takes the reader into the world of canine heroes. She tells the story of the amazing dogs that protect the President and those affiliated with the Oval office. The author also touches on the incredible relationship that these dogs have with their handlers. Goodavage gives touching and endearing accounts of the secret service dogs' heroic efforts and their loyalty. She engages the reader who can't help but feel affection and admiration for these intelligent canines. They perform an invaluable service and this book finally gives them the recognition that they deserve.

Just finished reading Secret Service Dogs and I thought it was fantastic! I love dogs and have the utmost respect for them and their abilities, I had no idea the training they can and do go through to help protect our President and First Family (they don't care about politics and they give their all) THANK YOU to all of our Secret Service members two legged and four legged. (I will admit that I cried reading Chapter 16). Thank you Maria Goodavage for a fantastic read - I couldn't put the book down once I started it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read

Well written account of a well run K9 Unit. It gives a real insight into the mindset of good handlers regardless of whatever discipline they work their K9s. I was taken aback that the organisation only seems to use 1 supplier of green dogs. Not great business sense keeping all eggs in the one basket so to speak. I highly recommend this book to any person who manages K9s, and to any person who is considering a career in K9.

Well done Maria.
