It’s not easy being a teenage witch. Seventh grader Abby Shepherd is just getting the hang of it when weird stuff starts happening all around her hometown of Willow Cove. Green slime bubbling to life in science class. Giant snakes slithering around the middle school gym. Her best friend suddenly keeping secrets and telling lies.
Things only begin to make sense when a stranger named Miss Winters reveals that Abby isn’t the only young witch in town—and that Willow Cove is home to a secret past that connects them all. Miss Winters, herself a witch, even offers to teach Abby and the others everything she knows about witchcraft.
But as Abby learns more about Miss Winters’ past, she begins to suspect her new mentor is keeping secrets of her own. Can Abby trust her, or does Miss Winters have something wicked planned for the young witches of Willow Cove?

For the reader, nothing. It means a fabulous middle grade adventure full of betrayals, magic, and intrigue. Do yourself a big favor and read this fast-paced story by Josh Roberts. Follow Abby as she discovers her true heritage, and develops a new and precarious relationship with six of her schoolmates. Why six, you might ask. Just wait till you see how they are connected.
In the process, her best friend and neighbor Robbie goes through his own trials after his stepmother disappears. On separate paths that eventually converge, Abby and Robbie experience changing relationships, danger, and find their own strengths and resilience.
The story starts when both Abby and Robbie discover by accident that she has a witch’s powers, when, forced off a cliff by gargoyles, Abby takes them soaring to safety on a broom. The experience leaves them both shaken and puzzled. As Abby uncovers more powers, she and Robbie grow apart. Robbie has started a romance with the new girl Becca. Abby is confused by her new-found powers.
And it seems she shares the powers with Amethyst, her new best friend. We find there are six girls with powers – a coincidence since during the Salem witch trial, six sisters were hanged. As they all become closer through training and sharing secrets, and meeting with the witch who has been sent as their tutor.
Meanwhile, Robbie and Becca are pursuing their own course of action by research and study. What they lack in supernatural powers, they make up for in determination, knowledge, and common sense.
The story threads weave and twist around, as they all head for a frightening showdown with the witch and the gargoyles. Hold on to your hats, readers. This story will take you for an exciting ride.
