From the first crack of musket fire at Lexington and Concord to the downing of the British colors at Yorktown, Christopher Ward does not tell the whole history of the American Revolution, but rather, illuminates the history of the war caused by that revolution—the military operations on land in the War for Independence. When The War for the Revolution was first published almost sixty years ago, it was instantly recognized as a modern classic of American historical scholarship, as well as a masterpiece of narrative nonfiction Revolutionary War history. Today it is probably the most cited single work on the American Revolutionary War. The combination of a simple format and eloquent writing make The War of the Revolution an ideal reference for the professional historian and American history buff alike.

I am not particularly a military history buff, but I have never been able to get a clear and focused picture in my mind of the flow and sweep of the American Revolution. This book brings the big picture to light with absolute clarity while keeping the readers interest page-by-page with details and the author's expert insights and critiques of strategies and tactics. Ward is a very engaging writer with an almost inconceivable grasp of the details at each step of the way. Although the book was published in 1952, there is no sense that the writing or outlook is dated. There is no taint of jingoism or patriotic chest thumping - just objective reporting of history. The British get ample praise where deserved, as well as harsh criticism for missed opportunities and overconfidence. The Americans come in for their share of criticism for bad judgement and especially for personal rivalries and incompetence among Washington's subordinates that result in military failures. Surprisingly, Benedict Arnold, the eventual traitor, comes off as a brilliant and dedicated soldier and even patriot - until the end, of course. While the book seems dauntingly large at over 1,000 pages, Ward had divided the book into easily digestible and self-contained chapters, and the reader can dip in and out of the book at leisure. My only criticism of the book, is that my copy, at least, is badly put together. The binding is not adequate to the thickness of the book and almost from the beginning, pages began separating from the binding.

Great reference books. A bit dry but lots of great info. Good for the scholar.

I can't believe it's not available (as of now) on amazon. It's unfortunate, i love reading about the American revolution and in other authors hands it can be a terrific moment in our history turned into a tedious read. not the case here. This book is packed with information as all history books should be, but it reads very well, at times like a novel. Mr. Ward handles the conflicts in such a way that it's a page turner. not often a term I'd use for a history book. The books definitely worth finding.

This book is so entertaining that its easy to forget that it is the most referenced Revolutionary War book available. A must read for any student of American history. A real eye opener that dispels many of today's Politically Correct notions about America's early years - especially the interaction between the English, Americans, and Native Americans.

In response to W.R. Baker' one-star review, my one-volume book published by Konecky & Konecky in 1952 has both bibliography and index. Perhaps Mr. Baker acquired the book from an inferior publisher who didn't want to print all 989 pages. That's not a fair reflection on the author's research & scholarly work.

In this one volume edition of The War of the Revolution, there is no bibliography and index. Where the bibliography and index should be is the following: "For a full PDF of the bibliography and index, please email info @skyhorsepublishing.com." ...No such luck after repeated attempts to reach Sky Publishing by email and phone. That's it for me...No more doing business with Sky Publishing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Der kurze Schreck - vor 1941 verfaßt & unvollständig ...
